Cabin Fever Transcript
No problem, and it's no bother, had nothing else to do. Just finished editing all the grammar/punctuation. :D --Jamielost 15:58, 9 May 2008 (PDT)
Transcript
Sorry Rob. I try to remember to take my spell checker off Aussie before I spell check here, but sometimes I forget. I'll change it back. Do you think "(Ben smiles. In his hands, behind his back, he clutches the closed baton we saw him use on the Bedouins in Tunisia. His hand inches toward the release button.)" should instead say he slipped it out of his coat sleeve? I didn't think he was moving his hand just toward the release button, but instead pulling it from a hidden place in the sleeve. -- LOSTonthisdarnisland 07:51, 1 May 2008 (PDT)
- I added [1] (Incredulous), not removed it, noticing you were adding feeling behind the transcript, something I thought was a great idea. -- LOSTonthisdarnisland 07:56, 1 May 2008 (PDT)
- If you don't think he moved it like that, I won't add it because I'm assuming the action that isn't fully shown on camera, so nothing definite. That was just how I 'saw' it when I was watching it again today. -- LOSTonthisdarnisland 07:59, 1 May 2008 (PDT) Ah, I just looked at that bit again. Ben puts his hand inside his coat pocket just after he pays the cabbie, as he's approaching the door. When he moves his hand, it's actually moving away from the release button, sliding it out from the sleeve into his hand with a better grip on then handle (aka revealing it to the audience, lol). And funny we thought the same descriptive word, yes :) 08:04, 1 May 2008 (PDT)
- BTW, great job on the transcript(s). It's very helpful as I don't see them *cough* in a manner that has closed captions *mumbles about Aussie television*. -- LOSTonthisdarnisland 08:05, 1 May 2008 (PDT)
More Arabic help
Of course. The chant is the shahadah, or the "testifying". It is basically the Islamic creed, where one testifies that "There is no god but Allah, [and] Mohammed is Allah's messenger." The shahadah actually begins with "I testify that...", but it can also be ommitted sometimes, as in this chant.
- Here's the full Arabic text of the shahadah:
- أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله و أشهد أن محمد رسول الله
- Meaning: "I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Mohammed is Allah's messenger."
- And the text without "أشهد أن" ("I testify that") parts, as chanted in the episode:
- لا إله إلاَ الله محمد رسول الله
- Meaning: "There is no god but Allah. Mohammed is Allah's messenger."
- Be careful if you want to copy and paste, though, it's a bit tricky, and it's a religious thing so you have to make sure you've got it right. -- blacxthornE t c 09:16, 1 May 2008 (PDT)
You're very welcome. Do you think I should add the parts the Bedouin speak in Arabic that I understand? If it's okay, should I also include the scripts in Arabic an Turkish, and note that those parts were untitled?-- blacxthornE t c 11:39, 1 May 2008 (PDT)
- Yes, please (if I have a vote) :) -- LOSTonthisdarnisland 11:42, 1 May 2008 (PDT)
- Thanks for the input (both of you).
I'll useI used the "codebox". It may be a little crooked but it's still improvement I guess. By the way, about original texts: You may want to look at the Ji Yeon transcript to see how we handled it there; I think it was quite nice and non-confusing (is that a word?). But with the boxes here, I don't know where we would put the original texts in this transcript.-- blacxthornE t c 15:01, 1 May 2008 (PDT)
- Thanks for the input (both of you).
- Could the English text be written in as regular text, because they are actual speaking parts, and then the Arabic could be written like the Korean in Ji Yeon? -- LOSTonthisdarnisland 03:43, 2 May 2008 (PDT)
- Yes, please (if I have a vote) :) -- LOSTonthisdarnisland 11:42, 1 May 2008 (PDT)

Hello. Is there a way that I could copy an image from Wikipedia and paste it here on Lostpedia? If you know how to, please explain so on my talk page. Thanks. --CTS 16:45, 2 May 2008 (PDT)
- I wanted to put the season promo images from wikipedia onto Lostpedia. If you click on the links below, you'll see the promo posters for each season. None of these are on the Lostpedia season pages, so I was going to somehow upload them to LP.

Restricted Areas
Hey, I've got a question for you. Since after Thursday's episode, when we know who's flash-(forward/backward) it was (Jack's), I've been wondering why no one has edited the Season 4 navigation bar. Furthermore, no one has edited the Season 4 page since The Shape of Things to Come (including the ABC-released name of the next episode, Cabin Fever). I was going to do both of these, but I can find how to edit the nav, and the Season 4 page appears to not let anyone edit it, unless (I assume) they have certain privileges.
My question isn't why haven't they been updated, but instead how does one get permission to edit that sort of thing? Is it only admins and / or sysops? --Michaelisinthecoffin 22:04, 3 May 2008 (PDT)
- Great, thanks so much! I wanted to edit the Season 4 page and the season 4 nav (which I'm not even sure where / how to access). --Michaelisinthecoffin 12:15, 4 May 2008 (PDT)
- Someone beat me to the punch and made the updates already. Thanks anyway for the quick response! Enjoy the rest of your weekend. --Michaelisinthecoffin 12:19, 4 May 2008 (PDT)

Military vs. Paramilitary
Robert, not to beat a dead horse here, but I would like to restate my position on my reversed edit. My note in the discussion page was removed that explained my logic for doing so. The term military denotes a soldiers affiliation with a country and government. Keamy, and probably most of his team, was at one point in a military, but no longer and thus are civilians. I believe the term paramilitary is the best description of their team. Definitions of paramilitary I found online were: a group of civilians organized in a military fashion; of or relating to a group of civilians organized to function like a military unit; a group of civilians trained and organized in a military fashion. The issue at hand is not their training, it's their status as civilians. if you wanted to be even more accurate, Keamy's team would be a Private Military Company (PMC), a.k.a. a security contractor. But of course that is just a fancy term for a mercenary. But all of these terms fall under the banner of paramilitarism.Kevrock 09:00, 6 May 2008 (PDT)
- The key to the difference between military service and mercenary or paramilitary work is performing the service in the support of a country, its government, and its people. Mercenaries and paramilitary forces typically have different or opposing incentives, most notably financial ones.
- Here are several definitions of the term military that specifically refer to government service:
- From Princeton.edu: N. the military forces of a nation, Adj. associated with or performed by members of the armed services as contrasted with civilians [2]
- "A civilian under international humanitarian law is a person who is not a member of his or her country's armed forces."
- Wikipedia: Military has two broad meanings. In its first sense, it refers to soldiers who represent their country and constitution. In its second sense, it refers to armed forces as a whole.[3]
- Armed forces are defined as: The armed forces of a state are its government-sponsored defense, fighting forces, and organizations. They exist to further the foreign and domestic policies of their governing body, and to defend that body and the nation it represents from external and internal aggressors.[4]
- From Princeton.edu: N. the military forces of a nation, Adj. associated with or performed by members of the armed services as contrasted with civilians [2]
- Definitions of paramilitary are listed in the first comment above.
- Para-, in English, is an affix of Greek and Latin origin meaning beside, near, past, beyond or contrary.
- If you wanted to keep the function + team naming convention, as in science team, in lieu of the term military team, I would suggest using security team.
- If you are highly opposed to the term paramilitary, then mercenary is the best term in the case of Keamy's team.Kevrock 22:35, 6 May 2008 (PDT)

Vandalism
Hi. There is a new user that is involved with a number of vandalism acts. Has just a couple of edits in total, so if you could check the contributions I'm sure you can see and take care of the problem. Thanks.-- blacxthornE t c 12:28, 6 May 2008 (PDT)
I'm really reluctant about reverting edits to talk pages, but this user seems to insist on adding irrelevant (1) discussions on top (2) of the pages without signing them (3). I tried to correct a couple of them (without deleting, just moving the sections to the end and signing them) and ask him to do it right. It's not like he's a newbie or anything, but he doesn't seem to take me (or maybe the wiki) seriously, according to the replies on my talk page. Anyway I thought maybe a SysOp's warning could help.-- blacxthornE t c 14:42, 9 May 2008 (PDT) P.S. Can we undo edits like this?

- Hey, maybe I should just keep a section here for all the questions I bug you with! Anyway, is there a section on Lostpedia where a list is kept of any articles that have been deleted, and why (an archive of the discussion that went along with it)? I just noticed that the course-correcting article disappeared and I wanted to find out why. Please let me know when you get the chance. Thanks! --michael_is_in_the_coffin 07:30, 16 May 2008 (PDT)
Thanks for the link. Yes, I can view the log, and it actually appears that it was you who deleted the article. The only discussion I could find was the listing of the article being deleted and your comment below that. Once an article is deleted, is all discussion surrounding its deletion removed as well? --michael_is_in_the_coffin 08:40, 16 May 2008 (PDT)
- Wow, you're right... I could have sworn it was semi-intelligible at one point. Hrm. Would you be against it if I redid the article, but kept it more intelligible and relevant? I think "course-correction" is an important item to the show, as explicitly stated by Ms. Hawking and Desmond. --michael_is_in_the_coffin 09:01, 16 May 2008 (PDT)

Discussion about Recent Ban
Hey Robert,
What is the best way to discuss my most recent banning? Via this talk?? I apologize if this is the wrong way, because I have no idea how else to contact you.
I think it was an unnecessary ban caused by a misunderstanding. I even emailed the main admin about the situation and did not even receive a reply.
I apologize if you or the admins felt I was "Spamming" the site, but if you looked at EACH one of my posts they were linked to very informative information for LOST fans.
I think each of the links were to screencaps or some sort of mystery that fans on episode come online to try and figure out. Not sure how much research you did to see what I post and where outside of this site, but you will see I am not "spamming". Yes, I link fans to my page, but the information is always relevant to the subject being discussed. Plus, I usually do this if I can not post a screencap (or several) or a video or if there is too much information.
As far as the Hieroglyphics post is concerned, I along with several of my readers and DarkUFO readers spent quite of bit of time trying to decipher the door and as far as I know we were the first ones to figure out what kind of symbols they were. Of course, the next day once DocArzt seemed to have a better formalized solution I added it to the rest of my post on my blog AND I credited his site as the source.
So:
1) If you felt I was stealing info I was not. I credited DA site properly.
2) I was linking to my blog, because that was the ONLY place on any of the major LOST sites that I had seen where you could as a fan see the COMPLETE breakdown from episode night and on of how the symbols were cracked or solved.
3) All I have ever done with my site/blog/postings on any fansite is always be informative and promote the show.
4) I am a mod of a MySpace LOST Forum, admin for DarkUFO and SpoilerTV and post on several other sites and I know what is spam and not.
5) If you feel that your readers do NOT want to link to another site or should not have to link to another site, I can understand on some level, but what is the best way for me to post such information to your readers as well? LOST fans just want information and want it immediately.
6) Plus, in the past I have seen many other fansites and blogs linked back to in the same way so I thought it was ok to do the same as long as it was LOST related information??
I hope you get a chance to read this and thanks for your time.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Thanks

Confusion about past/present tense
Hi. I've read the manual of style bits on the past-present tense a few times, and I think I understand it all. But to my understanding, according to the MoS, all events described in character bio articles should be in past tense. Yet, a lot of paragraphs in these articles seem not to be, regardless of their placing in the timeline events (although season 4 bits seem to be often in present tense). I completely appreciate that it's just something that hasn't been edited yet, but I wanted to be sure my understanding was really the right one - especially because I might go and edit things to past tense myself, if that's how it's supposed to be. Can you clarify? Many thanks. Alpert 09:46, 9 May 2008 (PDT)

Couple of issues
A couple of issues :-) Note: I posted this to both RobertKS and Plktrn as the only two seemingly active sysops at the moment.
- Seems like there is a lot of back and forth editing going on with regards to the STATUS of characters which seems to be due to the inadequate policy description on the template page. I raised some questions about the policy on the talk page, maybe you'd care to weigh in on the issue on the talk page? Template_talk:Infobox_Island_Character#Status
- There had been some issues with the categories and banners for Canonicity, but blackxthornE wrote up a really great proposal for streamlining the categories and correlating them correct and enhanced banners. Right now there's a consensus, however only three or so users have weighed in and no sysops. Black would love to get a go ahead from a sysop before he implements the changes. Lostpedia_talk:Canon#Discussion_-_Changes_in_canon_categories.2C_templates_and_LP:CANON
- A while ago there were some issues with image reuploads going beyond the usual delay into never appearing at all. Supposedly the problem had been fixed, but the problem is happening again. This is forcing users to upload changes to images under a new file name, which is creating orphaned images that only sysops can delete. Can you look into this? I realize it may require one of the sysops who knows about the more technical aspects of the wiki but I don't know who exactly that might be.
- The tense policy for episodes is *still* contradicted on different policy pages, present on Lostpedia:Episode_Manual_of_Style#Tense and past on Lostpedia:Manual_of_Style#Present_versus_past_tense. I suspect that a consensus was reached in the debate on the EMOS page for it to be present tense and no one realized it hadn't been changed on MOS. It has caused some problems with edits and reverts each citing the policy page the editor happened to consult.
- Lostpedia:Episode_Manual_of_Style is currently orphaned. I suggest a link to it from both the MOS page and the help infobox.
- Robert's proposal for an UQ might merit turning into a real policy page. User_talk:Robert_K_S/UQ_sections
- I made a counter proposal for changing the UQ sections into a Mysteries section. Might you weigh in on the idea and also let me know if there's a more appropriate talk page for the proposal? User_talk:Robert_K_S/UQ_sections
Phew! Thanks for any help you can provide on these issues. --Jackdavinci
- I want to add that I've been wanting to propose your UQ Sections guidelines as being official policy and maybe somewhat expanding from there. However, now I see that Jackdavinci's new proposal seems more appropriate for a couple of reasons. I'm going to comment on it on the appropriate talk page. Side note about the images: I know that there are a lot of orphan images, and I mean hundreds, that just stand in the way of browsing through image categories. I wanted to contribute to the search part of a self-initiated search-and-destroy mission, but I saw that I'd just been adding deletion templates and nothing happened. I check the delete category and see that there are almost 200 images waiting to be deleted, which means I probably nominated 150 or something. So I decided to stop looking for more images that should be deleted, because more images to delete were just going to discourage SysOps from even starting to get to it.-- blacxthornE t c 09:26, 13 May 2008 (PDT)

Lost: Via Domus Episodes
Hello Robert-
The episode pages for the seven episodes of Via Domus are entitled Lost: Via Domus/Game Guide/Episode 1, etc. I think the seven episode pages should be renamed to Force Majeure, A New Day, etc. since those are the actual titles of the episodes. Rather than put rename banners on all the pages, I thought I would ask you. Do you agree? --CTS 16:41, 14 May 2008 (PDT)
Character Secrets
Hi Robert. I hope you don't think these are stupid questions, but I wanted to purge the content on the Character Secrets article to add new sectionboxes and new content as I think the organization can be more fluid and I don't think some of the secrets are really secrets, per se. Here are my questions:
- Can I be allowed to re-edit the whole page?
- I don't think I can do everything all in one sitting, so can I do Seasons 1 and 2, then come back and finish the rest? Or should I just save all of my changes once I get all the info in there?
- I left a sample on the discussion page of where I'd like to go, and the main headings will be by seasons, then subsection by character. What do you think? :)
I'm done rewriting the article on Relationships, so I thought I'd add another little project just to do something and learn more about wiki-ing...I appreciate your comments. Thanks, Robert. :)--Easter 17:51, 14 May 2008 (PDT)
- Thanks, Robert. I'll go ahead and do that. :)--Easter 20:01, 14 May 2008 (PDT)
Why the Numbers must be input manually
The exec producers basically said that the numbers must be input by a person instead of a machine. This is so the automated computer would have no way of becoming like HAL in 2001, or Skynet in the Terminator. Apparently DHARMA couldn't risk having a computer that could go out of control be the one that decides whether the button should be pushed. Hi Robert - Point taken. My question was poorly phrased. It should have been more like, "Where is number five and is he going to jump out of the bushes when we least expect him to?"<whew> Since asking you about the question, I've reworked it and posted it as a theory.
