Template:NZShowGuide mistakes
Hi Plkrtn, there are some mistakes on the Template:NZShowGuide. "I Do" should be on 7-03-2007, as the current 6-03-2007 is a Tuesday. This in turn messes up the rest of the dates, which does not include the recap, "Lost Survivor Guide" (should be for 14-03-2007). "Not in Portland" is set for 21-03-2007, and "Flashes Before Your Eyes" for 28-03-2007. Please try and sort these out, thank you. --SilvaStorm
I believe it is distructive to finding answers if we have to go back and forth between pages to work on and alter a theory. It really takes a way from devloping the idea if we have to go from the discussion page while expanding, to theory page to check facts. --User:Kilgore Trout/sig
Template changes
Hey, Check out the changes I made to Template:USShowGuide. After reading more about the parser functions I found that you can let it "fall-through" different values to reduce the amount of code needed for results. I also added a new function to determine the Tomorrow/Tonight/Wednesday field. Jabberwock talk contribs email - 08:43, 14 February 2007 (PST)

Quick question
Hey Paul, quick wiki q for ya... this is dumb, but how do you just get images to link to pages instead of linking back to the Image: page? For ex., see South Korea in Lost as an example of the little box I did at the top, if I could link Sun, Jin and P.H.I. to their respective pages. Thanks! --PandoraX 08:04, 18 February 2007 (PST)
- Thanks, but actually I did and tried to use that template (Template:PortalImage) already, but it wouldn't work for my purposes, because I am using smaller thumbs and no text linked. It wouldn't be too difficult to just make up a new template (I started to at Template:ThumbImage), but I was wondering if there was a simple way to do it first. This way, I could use existing larger images as thumbs, and have the linking. --PandoraX 08:35, 18 February 2007 (PST)
- Hey Paul, still gotta bug you for a second, sorry :) It's the same thing... tried to modify the template with Template:ThumbImage, but I'm having a bit of trouble. Could you look at South Korea in Lost's code and tell me what I'm doing that Sun won't show up on the same line as Jin? Is it just an issue with the template?--PandoraX 14:53, 18 February 2007 (PST)

Accents/Dialects
Really? Damn. I have to admit no original knowledge on the subject. I can only repeat what I was told in acting classes. If it's true, would you mind talking to a few old college professors of mine? I always loved catching them in B.S. It burns me a little to find out I let one slip by! ;) -BearDog 08:59, 23 February 2007 (PST)
- You know what? I think we might both have been wrong. According to the dictionary, a dialect is actually a type of accent. See Accent and Dialect. The definition for Dialect seems focus more on regional differences of phonetics, vocabulary, and grammar between people who speak the same language, while accents cover that(3a) and speech patterns imported from a different native language (3b), so in the case of a regional speech patterns, either term is correct because a dialect is also an accent. Thanks for bringing up an interesting point that I never would have given much thought! -BearDog 12:36, 23 February 2007 (PST)
- No an accent is the way it sounds (e.g. I can't say my Ts and say war-er for water, its the sound, accent). A dialect is what you say (e.g. in Liverpool they call a male mate "jimmy". Its often colloquial language, its not the sound, its there own word - like saying ain't instead of isn't, its not a sound difference, its a lexical one). Lol seriously don't get Plkrtn into an argument on this one :-) --Nickb123 (Talk) 12:42, 23 February 2007 (PST)
As intelligent as I believe you to be Plkrtn, I just could't take the word of a guy on the internet. So what did I do? Scanned the internet for more guys. It turns out that this is a poorly explored facet of our shared linguistic anthropologies. I've found scholarly articles that agree with you (accent is sound, dialect is vocabulary), that agree with me (accent is the result of being multilingual, dialect is the collection of auditory differences based on region), articles that use the two interchangeably, and still others that state dialect is a subsection of accent. Words used to describe language should really have much clearer definitions. I'm not sure which section of education you work in, but as an educator, would you mind terribly publishing something scholarly; to clearly define the distinction once and for all? I'd cite ya. BTW, if you google "Accent, Dialect", you'll get a fascinating afternoon's read; or maybe that's only fascinating to me. Thanks for pointing me off on a fun new tangent! Here's a few of the more interesting ones that I've found: [1] [2] [3] [4]
- PS: I couldn't tell from Nick's warning whether or not this was a particularly sore subject for you. While I would never accuse you of going "insano", we all have our pet peeves. If this is yours, I do apologize for poking at nerves and have no problems backing off. It's just difficult to find intelligent debate in Los Angeles, sometimes. -BearDog 17:11, 23 February 2007 (PST)
I wonder if it isn't just a lesser known regional difference in vocabulary (what you'd call dialect :P). You know, the way Brits store their luggage in a boot while driving, and I keep my boot wrapped firmly around my foot. At some point, somebody is really going to have to write an American to British dictionary, for translation purposes...-BearDog 17:44, 23 February 2007 (PST)

- Hey there, I noticed something weird while editing lately (last 2 days). When I click on an edit box sometimes, I can't get my cursor in at all, don't know why. Sometimes I have to click the "bold" button to get something to appear, and then I click on that in order to get my cursor in the edit box. This probably isn't anything LP-specific, and may just be something going on with my own settings, but I tried closing the browser and rebooting, still doing it. Re: Episode 14
What? Recently people have been creating pages for new episodes before confirmation and have got away with, so I thought there would be no harm in making a page for what we all know will be episode 14. It could've been locked for now, and it didn't even contain any spoilers. --SilvaStorm
- I know there are none on here, but Wikipedia has quite a few. They don't respond as quickly on there. Sorry for my mistake. --SilvaStorm
- I'm not really fussed about my "Pages I Made" list, as you call it, but everyone must feel good if they've created a page that becomes really popular. If you think this is why I created new episode pages, you're wrong - I do it so others don't have to. Thanks. --SilvaStorm
- Pardon my french, but...bullshit. That list contains not just pages you didn't make, but pages where you don't even appear in the history. And sadly, now you're doing the same thing on wikipedia, complete with doing bogus page moves by switching pages and redirects (and then taking credit for the page). Pages aren't "made" by the first guy who races in with a spoiler, they're made by those who actually get off their ass and do the real work of writing the article. In case you missed it the first time: Bullshit. --Minderbinder 08:38, 28 February 2007 (PST)
- Silva you've been warned about this before and you know the policy. We do not create episode and character pages based on speculation. They are only created AFTER released by an official source (ABC Medianet). You have been temporarily banned for doing this before and if you continue to do so you will be banned again. timing out
Has there been any change to the length of time inactive before the site logs a user out? I've noticed it seems to happen more since I started using the Lostbook, but that doesn't make much sense and was probably just when I noticed. The only reason that I ask, is that I edit this site while I should be working. Occasionally, my phone rings and I actually have to go back to working. If I was mid-edit when I had to put it down and the site logs me out, I lose whatever changes I made and don't know until I attempt to preview. I've gotten around it by highlighting and copying all articles before pressing the preview button, but it seems to happen with more frequency lately. Am I way off-base, or has that changed? -BearDog 12:22, 5 March 2007 (PST)

Image use
- I've tried to stay out of this whole mess, but the deletion of the image montage caught my eye. I could go through userpages and point out many examples of custom images that do not "illustrate" an article that are based on content from Lost. I could easily point out dozens. So could you I'm sure. In this sense it looks like a person-specific image deletion to me. Otherwise, lit would be proper to go through and apply it across the entire site, to all users who have such images, and especially images which are based on Lost episode images that are not used for mainspace articles. I doubt ABC/Disney is going to send out cease & desists for this type of "gray-area" use (fan art) of their content, as the intent is clearly different from putting together a comprehensive chronological gallery of dozens of screencaps for an episode's Gallery section (which we have clearly prohibited) a la Lost-Media, which IMHO falls entirely outside that gray area. Let's be consistent, and these are rationales for choosing either path: removing ALL such userspace images, or allowing them as illustrative fan content. However I am uncomfortable with it being directed at a single user. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 15:37, 5 March 2007 (PST)
- Examples: Image:ScribbledBlast2.jpg, Image:PIE.jpg, Image:Juliet2.jpg, Image:Articleattackaward.jpg. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 15:49, 5 March 2007 (PST)
- Her montage used a GALLERY of images Santa, hence the removal. It featured like 30 pics in one. --Nickb123 (Talk) 15:53, 5 March 2007 (PST)
- I can't speak for the source of the image used on Nick's or Pandora's page, but we have take a stand and set policy against galleries, of which I think the montage picture falls under. If it were a single photo of Sun I don't think there would be an issue. Jabberwock talk contribs email - 15:54, 5 March 2007 (PST)
- OK that rationale makes sense, as far as site-wide consistency. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 17:19, 5 March 2007 (PST)

My reply re: Spamming, etc.
You said the definition is: "To indiscriminately send unsolicited, unwanted, irrelevant, or inappropriate messages"
Sure, I sent something unsolicited. To nine people. But it was not irrelevant, unwanted, nor inappropriate. And your official definition of spam is states quite clearly "indiscriminately". It is not "indiscriminately OR x, y, z" but "indiscriminately AND x, y, z". My messages were quite clearly not indiscriminate.
Therefore, while I may have simply pissed off a sysop, I was not violating your own clearly stated rules.
Irregardless, in spite of not violating your spam policy, I was willing to follow your fellow sysop's flawed interpretation of the policy, and refrained from posting anything more that would offend your fellow sysops (note, none of the people I "solicited" complained about it, just the sysops felt I was doing something "wrong")
The reason why I posted the image on my page, is that I was banned without any warning, for not violating a policy but because a sysop let their emotions get in the way of doing their job. I was willing to follow the on-the-fly dictator-like sysop law making (where the word of the sysop is law, not the posted policy as law). Yes, in spite of my disagreement with the handling of the situation, I was perfectly willing to follow the definition.
But, no matter, I still got banned. Simply talking to me would have been sufficient to resolve the matter, but I was not given any benefit of the doubt. The fact that I felt that I was not violating any rules should have been enough, but instead of acting like a sysop should, they abused their power.
While Mr. Leaf showed that he is a reasonable person and was willing to apologize, Santa on the other hand decided to take it personally and in general be an ass about it. So much so that he locked his talk page, rather than reply to me like a civilized person would.
Santa deleted my image claiming it to be spam, but it is not spam. It is an image illustrating my frustration with being a member of Lostpedia, as I was banned for not violating a policy, and in general treated like a spammer/vandal.
Yes, I do feel that I have to walk on eggshells, because it seems that at least sysops will make law according to their personal feelings and not follow the posted policies. I would be happy to remove said image, once I have assurance from sysops that I won't be arbitrarily banned for some unwritten rule.
On Wikipedia, the sysops there are really nice. They try to clarify rules and educate rather than eradicate. Apparently, Lostpedia does not follow the same type of community spirit, but is rather run by the emotions of the elite.
Just because I haven't made 10,000 edits does not make my account single-purpose, nor does it make me a spammer/vandal which your fellow sysops have apparently labeled me as. I am offended by this assertion.
Unlike here, the people on HeroesWiki are much friendlier. The sysops there are actually helping me with my wiki, rather than claiming a bunch of crap about how I'm supposedly violating their license.
While I originally felt that Lostpedia should be a "golden standard" for my wiki to shoot for, it seems that your popularity and subsequent rise to power is going to your collective heads. I definitely do not want the attitudes here to be part of my community.
It would be one thing if I set up "lostwiki" or something and just pilfered content off of here. But I am not doing so. So I'd love to hear from your lawyer explain exactly how I am apparently violating your your CC License.
So, you can continue to fight me, drop me as an advertiser, ban me from the site, sue me for supposed CC License violations.
Or, you can simply treat me with respect, and assure me that I don't have to walk on eggshells, and I will be glad to remove the image and continue contributing to the site.
But before overreacting, consider that I have influence on Wikipedia, and if you're going to treat me badly, I will work to ensure that Lostpedia's references are removed from Wikipedia, which are in fact in violation of posted Wikipedia policies.
But, I am sure that you're much more reasonable than Santa, so we shouldn't have to escalate things.
I just want to be a member of Lostpedia without being in the sysop's crosshairs.
User:Tarabyte 09:07, 23 May 2007 (PDT)
stop with your personal attacks.
I don't appreciate your assertion that I "don't have the skill" to create my own wiki templates. That is both rude and inaccurate.
I have designed hundreds of websites, and I also really am a respected member of Wikipedia.
My supposed "threat" was in response to a threat from one of your sysops claiming that they'd block my advertising, sue me for license violation, etc. I was explaining what my response would be to YOUR threats (if acted upon), not threating to do anything.
Furthermore, I can make my site as I like it. Seeing as you're not a member of my site nor doing anything to contribute towards it, you have no say whatsoever as to how I run my site.

- First of all, it's not a personal attack when someone states fact. Plagiarizing content from our templates and copying the format of them isn't going to earn you any respect. What plkrtn was trying doing was pose a question. If you have the skills like you say you do, then why did you need to copy Lostpedia? That's not a personal attack. What is your Wikipedia username? I'd like to see you back up your claims of being a "respected member". Is wikipedia:User:Tarabyte your account? If so, I don't see how 8 contributions makes it a respected member. Jabberwock talk contribs email - 12:05, 23 May 2007 (PDT)
- Sorry to burst your bubble, but that is not my Wikipedia account. Furthermore, the accusation was that I don't have the skills, not a question of why I didn't make my own template. The accusation made was a personal attack. User:Tarabyte 12:08, 23 May 2007 (PDT)
- My bubble is not bursted. "if you are a well regarded Wikipedia user, then why don't you have the skill to create your own front page design and content format?" That was posed as a question, not an accusation. Jabberwock talk contribs email - 12:09, 23 May 2007 (PDT)
- Never heard of the phrase "why re-invent the wheel"? Why are you guys so anal about template design code? User:Tarabyte 12:13, 23 May 2007 (PDT)
- You're not reinventing the wheel you're duplicating it. Jabberwock talk contribs email - 12:16, 23 May 2007 (PDT)
- You just ignored what I said, and followed up with nothing short of a direct jab. I am not duplicating wikipedia. So you found the edit page that goes with my IP address on there. Big deal, I don't always stay logged in to my account. What is your point at further attacking me rather than resolving things? User:Tarabyte 12:27, 23 May 2007 (PDT)
- Nobody is attacking you. You asked about reinventing the wheel and I answered. Also, nobody claimed you were copying Wikipedia, only that you copied templates from this site, Lostpedia. Since you evidently just want to go in circles about thins, I'll make it simple: If you continue to linkspam your site on Lostpedia you will be banned. Please show us some good faith efforts to modify your site so it doesn't look like the front page of Lostpedia. If you continue to steal content it's possible to just add a deny from rule for your IP so all you see is a "403 Forbidden" error code when you visit this site. Nobody is out to get you here. Your actions have "placed you in the crosshairs" as you say. Make some good-faith contributions for this Wiki and stop stealing templates and all will be well. Jabberwock talk contribs email - 12:35, 23 May 2007 (PDT)
- What was the point of your reply linking to a page on wikipedia linked to an IP address? That sure looks like a purposeful attack. And what is the big deal if my site looks a bit like yours? How is rounded corners "stealing content"? I can easily change my IP also, please stop threatening me. And I have made good faith contributions to the wiki, but having spent so much time defending myself, it probably is drowned out when viewing my user history. --User:Tarabyte 12:41, 23 May 2007 (PDT)
- It's not just rounded corners, it's everything combined and how they all work together to look like Lostpedia. You've copied full headings, templates, placement of images (such as in your Article of the Week), etc. Even the content in your legal disclaimer has been directly copied from the one here, then change ABC for Fox, etc. Jabberwock talk contribs email - 13:10, 23 May 2007 (PDT)
- The same design is on half a dozen other sites, that have no relation to me. Plus, the legal disclaimer was not original content, LP copied it from Wikia, where that same format is used all over the place. Finally, my site is not the same as LP, and the template is a work in progress and will be changed significantly as time goes on. If you have issues with how my site is being run, join it and contribute, otherwise, please don't overlord. User:Tarabyte 13:20, 23 May 2007 (PDT)

Public domain - copyright question
Hi. You seem to be the person in the know about copyright. I've mean meaning to add pics to Philosophy for some time now, but haven't because I got confused and stopped thinking about it! My question is whether the {{PD-ineligible}} tag is the right one to use for an image where the copyright has expired, such as this? Given the options, I'm fairly sure it is the right one, so this is probably a stupid question. Still, I thought it best to check before uploading a dozen or pics. Oh, and by the way - Since I found that template I now can't find where the page was that I got it from. Should this and the other ones maybe be added to "Copyright Template" link on the Upload page, or be made easy to find in some other way? Thanks--TechNic|talk|conts 15:23, 23 May 2007 (PDT)

Strange block
G'day, Plkrtn. Might I inquire as to why you recently banned me? You stated that I "attacked a sysop", but I recall doing no such thing. If you could specifically point out where this happened, it would be much more helpful than just an enigmatic ban, as it would allow me to avoid making a similar mistake in the future. -Silence 15:50, 23 July 2007 (PDT)

SysOps at other Lostpedias
Hi, man!
My name (well, my geek name, lol) is Calick, and I am a high-rank editor in the Spanish Lostpedia.
These last months the wiki has experienced a rebirth and a high increase of its numbers of articles thanks to me and other members who have taken the new control of our wiki. However, we have not complete control, because we are not SysOps (the original administrators probably were gone, leaving the page abandoned, or maybe they never existed...).
What I'm asking to you, is there any way to become and Admin based on the qualities a SysOp must have, no matter that I am from another Lostpedia? We have no idea how to become an Admin or a SysOp, and we need to take control of some activities, specially against some recent vandalism actions. I know I haven't done as much as you and sure here I wouldn't deserve the right of what I'm asking for, but the Spanish Lostpedia is smaller by the time, and I've done a huge work as an editor and controller.
Please, if you can help me and my partners, we'll be very grateful to you.
See you...in another life, brotha!
---Thanks!
New Changes

Woops
Hey, dont know what the hell is going on, i tried making edits to the bloopers and continuity page earlier and it just deleted everything, and no matter what i tried, if i tried to put the whole thing back in it would just disapear when i tried to save it! Dont ban me!! --Lewis-Talk-Contribs 05:09, 1 October 2007 (PDT)
- Thanks for fixing that.. any idea what was going on?--Lewis-Talk-Contribs 05:14, 1 October 2007 (PDT)
- Nope that can't be it, im a loyal firefox 2.0 user ^^ unless its because im using 2.0 instead of one of the earlier ones? --Lewis-Talk-Contribs 05:20, 1 October 2007 (PDT)
- To jump in here, it is not the browser that affects it although the size of the page is what matters. I will take a look at the size of the Bloopers page. The problem started about a month ago when regular users started accidentally deleting large pages (usually talk pages) and they could not be manually reverted, only reverted by a Sysop. Kevin was emailed numerous times about the problem so it's probably best to talk to him Paul. You can check back on mine and Nick's talk pages for more details (Here on my talk page). -Mr.Leaf 13:25, 1 October 2007 (PDT)

dispute over oceanic six
Hi,
There is an ongoing dispute over the inclusion of Kate in the oceanic six in that article. A vote was organized. It would be helpful if the evaluation of the vote were taken out of the hands of the couple people (including me) who have strong opinions on the matter. I can live with any result but I would rather see the evaluation of the result made by someone not strongly on one side or the other. Dharmatel4 15:58, 5 February 2008 (PST)

domus vs. domum
i see you deleted my bit in the article Lost: Via Domus about the erroneous latin ... i dont speak latin, but from that dictionary article, the word domus is used not wrong as a word (it means home really), but wrong in denclension - it is not nominative, but accusative (it's not used as "home" itself, but as "way (to) home", thus it is accusative and should have the ending -um, word "domus" is irregular) - look also here - fourth declension. But maybe I am wrong :) --Running 00:58, 9 February 2008 (PST)
- Well, I think it was on right place and relevant, because it was at the place where the article talked about the name and what it should mean (but what it does only in bad way). I agree that we would need some latin speaker, it's completely true, but from the little I know it is used in a bad way....ok, it should be maybe on different place in the article, i agree with that.... --Running 08:41, 9 February 2008 (PST)
Pages That Require SysOp Attention
Hi Paul, Thought Id give you a quick list of a few pages that have been under discussion for some time now and require a SysOp decision to close them as they have gone on too long:
- Life Without Lost - Like all Sky One shows they should be merged as one, this has been under discussion since August 25 2007!
- Lost season 4 poster - Completely unneeded page, under discussion since Jan 31
- ApolloCandy.com events - All agreed with a rename, discussed since Dec 31
- Push the Button - May 2007
- The Watch transcript - November, No discussion for weeks, unanimous decision already reached
- Toxic gas
Sorry to be a pain but back logs get to me, thanks man! --Lewis-Talk-Contribs 18:33, 9 February 2008 (PST)
