Crimes

Update, on that, I bulleted and highlighted some key points in what you wrote for Ana Lucia. Does that look ok?--Peppergirl 10:42, 28 May 2007 (PDT)

Hey, that's ok- admittedley i was getting a bit confused, it just asked for things to look neater by using bullets and emphasis on major crimes, although it's hard to maintain that while making it more analytical. --Peppergirl 10:38, 28 May 2007 (PDT)

Re: Theories Templates

Thanks for the support, and yes I have seen enter 77, very good episode. --   Dee4leeds  talk  contribs  all  01:09, 10 March 2007 (PST)

I was thinking to keep them as close as possible to the normal navigation counterparts, making the theory pages feel like an extension of the main page not just another page. --   Dee4leeds  talk  contribs  all  01:14, 10 March 2007 (PST)
Going to do some more soon, just need to be in the right state fo mind. --   Dee4leeds  talk  contribs  all  01:17, 10 March 2007 (PST)
  • Hello, Lost Soul. I think that those theory templates look great. However, it would be a great hassle to continually updating them with all of the new theory pages popping up. It would take a long amount of time to do what I said earlier. However, with that said, it still would be a great idea to implement. With that said, hold off until other sysops would give their approval (e.g. santa, jabberwock, plk), but overall, the temps look good. P.S. You might want to drop in IRC to discuss with the other sysops later in the day. Regards, Marik7772003 08:45, 10 March 2007 (PST)
Just dropping in to tell you am going to add the template to theory pages now. You can help if you want. :D --   Dee4leeds  talk  contribs  all  01:36, 18 March 2007 (PDT)

Trivia

  • Well it isn't. The guy is making the old Lostpedia come alive again in the Trivia section. If you very random information in bullet points try to petition for it to be back to that way.--CaptainInsano 10:51, 10 March 2007 (PST)

Re:Copyrighting

Hey, for book covers I would use "promotional" I think. For flags, I don't think copyright is necessarily applicable, its more "PD-ineligible" I think. Mini images are technically the same as what they would be big, so "tv-screenshot" or "promotional" - however I think portal images are so low-res and pixel that they actually don't fall under copyright restriction, but its always better to tag them than not if you've got the free time! Lastly, userpage images depends on the source really. Naturally if you've taken a photo yourself then you can use the right template for that, but for many other ones their copyright is ineligible as its publicly released on the net. However, some fall under Creative Commons Licensing - which I don't think requires a template.

Sorry, Plkrtn is sometimes the best to ask about fair use rules. Hope my input helps. If you have some specific examples you're unsure on, feel free to link me to em. Thanks for all your work on em, --Nickb123 (Talk) 15:15, 10 March 2007 (PST)

Deceptions and cons

I really like it. Looking good.-- Dagg talk contribs4 8 01:21, 11 March 2007 (PST)

Galleries

  • Please investigate issues of copyright and fair use, as you seem to be eliminating many images you consider to be "galleries". Some of these are promotional images, and are very different in nature from screencaps from broadcast episodes of Disney content. Also some images you have removed contain descriptive captions. The word "gallery" used either in the article, or interpretively by you, does not necessarily define the existence of, or lack or, fair-use practices. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 05:06, 11 March 2007 (PDT)
  • Use of the <gallery></gallery> by itself does not denote or define violation of fair use. You may also examine the copyright tag attached to each image for further clarification of the type of image being used. If this is confusing to you, please do not remove images. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 05:35, 11 March 2007 (PDT)
  • It's all good, don't worry. I just didn't want further images being indiscriminately removed. However, don't stop watching for this: If it's a collection of episode content from Lost, without explanatory or descriptive value, then chances are you are fine removing it, for example a gallery in an episode article, or character article. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 05:40, 11 March 2007 (PDT)

Images

Thanks for your help categorizing images. Just in case you didn't know Category:Images has all the different image categories that you'd need and Special:Uncategorizedimages is a good place to start categorizing. Thanks again. --Mr. Crabby (Talk) 13:37, 16 March 2007 (PDT)

  • I looked at the category and it says "Photos on or of the Island." So I'd guess pretty much everything goes. If you are still unsure ask User:GoodRom since he created the category in the first place. --Mr. Crabby (Talk) 06:09, 17 March 2007 (PDT)

  • An update: I have done all three season 3 episodes, just letting you know. --Mr. Crabby (Talk) 14:18, 17 March 2007 (PDT)

  • Hey, you put the Images to be replaced template on a few images earlier due to the fact that they had the ABC watermark. However as Lost is broadcast on ABC the majority of our images especially of the more reason episodes will have the ABC watermark on them. it is something we don't worry about. The lost-media or other lost fan site watermarks are the things we prefer not be here, so any images with those feel free to add the replace tag, however not ones with the ABC watermark. Hope you understand. Thanks again. -Mr.Leaf 18:12, 17 March 2007 (PDT)
If you want to try and go through and get rid of the logo on any images you find that is fine, however it really isn't a huge problem and 99% of the Season 3 images will likely have the logo or the HD symbol. It is an inevitable problem we will run into. And some of the Season 1 or Season 2 images will have it to. I don't mind if you want to go through and replace those, but when I go through the pictures that need to be replaced category to replace them I'd prefer that there weren't 50 or more images in the category (as there would be if we marked all those with ABC logos) and that there were just the few that really need replacing such as those with lost media watermarks, etc. Thanks again -Mr.Leaf 09:25, 18 March 2007 (PDT)

Wikify Template

  • It looks good to me, although I think it could easily be over used. I'd suggest start by putting on a few pages and see what other users thing. Also, posting Category:Wikify on the Job list would help get attention. -Mr.Leaf 10:17, 18 March 2007 (PDT)
Done. -Mr.Leaf 10:05, 21 March 2007 (PDT)

Re:Table

It was just a little idea I had a while ago, as in a lot of our ep articles, there's a synopsis full and pics, and then underneath its all boring prose. I was inspired by the Animals article, which had a little DHARMA logo and image of Cerberus. I thought it might be an idea to do the same on other pages, small iconic images that keep reader attention. I might try and get it made policy I guess. Thanks for your feedback! --Nickb123 (Talk) 06:02, 6 April 2007 (PDT)

I'm just reviewing the edits now. I don't mind what he's done to the Season articles, giving number of eps main cast have featured in in a bracket. However, I agree its not necessary on character articles as they are main cast, and as you say all their goings on are now cross-referenced. I'll message him, and then if you're free can you help me revert? --Nickb123 (Talk) 04:01, 9 April 2007 (PDT)
Haha, I cut my losses and just colored the wikitable. I can't be doing with Pandora's old flashback one, it doesn't make sense and is too dynamic. Sometimes you just need solid old design like the wikitable is --Nickb123 (Talk) 06:59, 11 April 2007 (PDT)
Oh P.S. can you do pics? I dunno how to resize them other than manually on Paint every time. --Nickb123 (Talk) 07:00, 11 April 2007 (PDT)
I'm happy to help with pics. If it's useful, once the content is created I can just blitz through and create small pic files for each item. (New tables are looking very good by the way)--TechNic|talk|conts 07:10, 11 April 2007 (PDT)
Erm I think finish it first off in sandbox to add on to Dagg's template, then implement the whole thing site wide :-) --Nickb123 (Talk) 07:25, 11 April 2007 (PDT)
Can you do anything to bring your file sizes down a little? With a bit of tweakage you should be able to get a decent looking 90px jpg down to only a couple of Kb. We're going a bit graphics heavy with these tables, so anything that can be down to reduce download times would be good.--TechNic|talk|conts 09:10, 11 April 2007 (PDT)
Should be options when you go to "save as". I just tend to tinker with them till I get a decent balance between size and quality.--TechNic|talk|conts 09:19, 11 April 2007 (PDT)
No, don't let it stop you. I use Fireworks so can't really help with Photoshop - Here's a useful article though: Saving for web.--TechNic|talk|conts 09:35, 11 April 2007 (PDT)

Nav-Jack

Yes, looking great :). You don't necessarily need to change all the pages to use Nav-Jack though, since you already redirected Nav-JackFlash to Nav-Jack. For example, Thai boy is already using the new template.-- Dagg talk contribs4 8 08:46, 11 April 2007 (PDT)

Nah some of it interlinks. However, I personally question doing Item cats for the Pearl computer, orientation, U-matic, peumatic tube, swan computer, swan orientation, swan speakers, flame computer. I'd wanna remove the cat from these and then from the portal - it'd make a huge diff --Nickb123 (Talk) 10:25, 11 April 2007 (PDT)
Meh no matter, I just personally think they belong elsewhere. Anyway, finished doing the tabling now :-) finally! --Nickb123 (Talk) 10:56, 11 April 2007 (PDT)
Still quite a few pics to go yet, but yeah I think it looks good. As soon as its finished I'll move it over to Portal:Items, and then we can go through em the item pages with the new template style --Nickb123 (Talk) 11:02, 11 April 2007 (PDT)

Hey, I would personally leave em but then again I don't think catting images really at all is necessary due to the gallery extension which lets you search titles. But anywayz, if you were doing it I'd say definitely the former where you're using ...|<episode name>]] as opposed to the Pilot images one. --Nickb123 (Talk) 08:16, 1 June 2007 (PDT)

Defaultsort

Hello Lost Soul. Just letting you know that I wrote a comment on the 'Template:Defautsort' talk page. I hope you'll see my reasoning, but I'm not very good at explaining technical stuff, so if anything seems unclear, please leave me a message on my talk page and I'll try to clarify. Although I tried to explain why a template of that name is not needed (and would likely do more harm than good) on Lostpedia , I like your usage guide for the 'defaultsort' function, with the example adapted to Lostpedia. I think it could even form an interesting basis for a complete Lostpedia help page that could group explanations about several available features that can be of interest to Lostpedia users. It could perhaps be adapted, for example, from Wikipedia's page Help:Magic words, from where we would select some of the features most likely to be generally useful to Lostpedia users and add Lostpedia-speficic examples of use. What do you think? -- Cheers (talk) 08:52, 6 June 2007 (PDT)

I was thinking maybe a small selection from the list at [2]. Of course, they're not used everyday and I'm not sure which would be the most useful to most users. Probably the classics about the TOC, the variables that are commonly used in templates, defaultsort, a few others. It may be better to keep our list minimal, starting with just a few, and then add info on more features on a case by case basis if and when a particular need appears to arise. -- Cheers (talk) 09:13, 6 June 2007 (PDT)
I suggest the following:
  • Step 1: We find or create a suitable page for that information. I reviewed the existing LP pages and I see that, in the Lostpedia:General Usage Guide (LP:GU) page, there's already a tiny "useful terms" section, which currently only mentions two of the TOC-related features. We could use this already existing page and build up this section with more terms. However, that may not be a good solution, because that page is currently a mix of editing policies, tips, netiquette guide, etc. Besides, it is in the Lostpedia namespace and it is currently tagged (albeit perhaps abusively) as a policy page and locked, so that makes it difficult to ameliorate it. The other possibility is to find an appropriate name for a new page and create it. I haven't thought a of a good name. The choice would depend on how broad we want the page's scope to be. Help:Editing may be too broad, unless we want to allow the page to eventually grow and cover other aspects. That could be a good solution if that page is meant to become a split from the current LP:GU page. Or, if we want to limit the page's scope more to what we have discussed above, maybe it could be named Help:Software features or something like that. Ideas?
  • Step 2: We build up the page. Your defaultsort guide is already ready to be included there. The terms from the 'useful terms' section from the LP:GU page could also be copied there, which would seem the appropriate place for it. We (you, me, anyone interested to help) continue to work on the page and make additions as we see fit, eventually adapting some stuff from WM/WP if that seems useful and creating examples adapted to Lostpedia.
-- Cheers (talk) 17:09, 6 June 2007 (PDT)

Lol, don't assume that I know more than you. It's probably the opposite. I'm not a 'tech' person. I just happen to have read parts of the softare manual recently. About the name, I think the important point is that it be clear enough so the average Lostpedia user ('the ALU') can figure it out. Your suggestions are good. 'Magic words' is the term Wikimedia uses, so consistency with WM would be a reason to adopt it. I was afraid that it might be meaningless for the ALU, and 'Software features' might be more readily understood. 'Special tricks' is not bad. I'm tempted to let consistency win and go for 'Magic words'. Anyway, I can't think of an ideal page name, so I'd rather let you decide, hehe. About your last question, we're explicitly _not_ proposing any sort of policy. The page's purpose is not at all to tell users what they must or must not do, it is only to give helpful information that users can use or not. To make that perfectly clear, I think the page would better fit into the 'Help' namespace (i.e. preferably Help:Magic words more than Lostpedia:Magic words). For example, in the list at Help:Contents, pages under the 'Policy' heading are more policies and pages under the 'Help' heading are more help pages. (Other headings seem to cover help stuff, with some guidelines though it). Help pages may include tips, advice and suggestions, but they do not establish policies. Unlike policies or guidelines, help pages generally do not claim a normative role and are freely editable. It's in the same spirit as when you wrote the defaultsort guide/example. You weren't writing a policy, you were giving helpful information and tips. So, yes, I'd say we just go ahead and do it. -- Cheers (talk) 13:08, 7 June 2007 (PDT)

OK. For the moment, I started something in my userspace at User:Cheers/Drafts, so we can work on it and get an idea of what it might look like. (You have, of course, explicit permission to edit my drafts subpage while working on this.) We can also have input from other users and copy the result to a new page when it reaches an acceptable content and form. Whatever content we end up with may also help determine the page name that will best reflect it. -- Cheers (talk) 17:00, 8 June 2007 (PDT)

Images

  • When categorizing add like 1x01 or 1x02 or 3x21 in the template. I will change the template to ignore them for now and then if we go with the idea I will set it automatically categorize them. So pretend like the categories are there and use the 1x02 system. If you get what I mean. Let me know if you have any questions. -Mr.Leaf 10:30, 28 July 2007 (PDT)
  • Yep. It shouldn't take too long as the idea doesn't really impact the wiki as a whole, its more a project a few users want to take on. I'll look at it again in a couple minutes and see. -Mr.Leaf 10:35, 28 July 2007 (PDT)
  • Ya, thats fine. Thats the good thing about this template, that it's easy to add and change stuff. Just make sure when you add you add it all 5 variables (you are going to have to add it to the template 5 times) so it works correctly no matter what place you place it in when using the template. -Mr.Leaf 10:32, 29 July 2007 (PDT)
  • Never mind, checked and you added it 5 times so it's all good. Thanks again. -Mr.Leaf 10:34, 29 July 2007 (PDT)

It's totally random, but is there and order you want me to do? --Blueeagleislander 02:05, 31 July 2007 (PDT)

Its part of a new feature I am adding. Give me an hour or so and I'll explain the whole thing when I'm finished. The skinny of it is it will also use template:image to add the copyright template, let us know which images use template:image aren't categorized and on the image page have a list (not only in cat) of what the image is of. Give me a bit more time to work on it. -Mr.Leaf 11:58, 31 July 2007 (PDT)
And yes I do realize, all of the images using template:image right now might be messed up, i promise i will fix it ;)-Mr.Leaf 12:10, 31 July 2007 (PDT)
Okay, done. Basically what I've added is not much. I was just messing around but now you can add a copyright tag to the image using the template as well. Just do something like {{img|Jack|copy=promo}} or whatever. I've updated the Template with instructions on this. I've added a couple other features you don't need to worry about. Such things as cleaning up the template, adding all images that use the template to 1 cat, and creating text on the page that says "This is an image of Jack, Kate, etc" for whatever categories it links to. This is done automatically so the copyright templates are all you need to worry about. -Mr.Leaf 14:51, 31 July 2007 (PDT)
  • Yep, it all works now. Go wild. -Mr.Leaf 10:21, 1 August 2007 (PDT)
  • I might get rid of it but it is just a test at the moment. And if you use template:image to add the copyright template that line appears before the copyright template, see Image:3x14-paulo-tshirt-52.jpg. I am still working on the spacing and breaks and stuff however. -Mr.Leaf 10:35, 1 August 2007 (PDT)
  • I've removed the line of text however it still adds copyright tags. -Mr.Leaf 07:09, 2 August 2007 (PDT)
  • I would add it to the infobox but I think we should sort most of them before we do that. If you want to go for it but I am going away for a couple weeks so won't be doing much around here. Thanks again for your help on the images thing. -Mr.Leaf 06:06, 3 August 2007 (PDT)

My sig

Hey, thanks for pointing that out. I'm not sure why it's doing that - I have it at User:97198/sig, and my sig in my preferences is set with {{User:97198/sig}} (on raw signature) but every time I click save and the page reloads it has an added "SUBST:" like {{SUBST:User:97198/sig}}... I'm not sure if that's supposed to happen, or if that's putting the whole code onto talk pages?! Do you know what's stuffing it up, or how I could fix it? Thanks :) •97198 talkcontribs 06:25, 19 August 2007 (PDT)

Ah, right! I don't think I read the instruction manual at Help:Sig properly! Thanks for getting me sorted out! (And let's hope this works! -->) •97198 talkcontribs 07:10, 19 August 2007 (PDT)

Re:Bug

  • Are you sure about that bug. Would you mind checking again and grabbing a screenshot if it still happens. I can't seem to recreate it. Thanks -Mr.Leaf 08:58, 23 August 2007 (PDT)
  • Okay, I missed the Improper Category thing completely at first. Small bug but I fixed it. The template was set that there had to be a minimum of one category added for it to work excluding the copyright template but this image didn't have any other so it messed up the template. it's been fixed though. Thanks for pointing it out. -Mr.Leaf 09:05, 23 August 2007 (PDT)

Well this has always been a bone of contention, but I've always asked people to work in the past tense, simply because we are creating a chronicle of things that we've already seen and are now in the past, both in TV show broadcast terms, and if you put the Lost timeline into the real world.  Plkrtn  talk  contribs  email  07:18, 12 April 2008 (PDT)

your idea for interviews

I personally think its a great idea. The thing that needs some thought is how to incorporate the content in the site. i.e. what kind of article to create, what to name it and where to put it. I dont think there are any articles of this type at present. I'm only however speaking for myself. As a first step, you may want to think up a brief description of how you would think the infomation should be presented on the site.Dharmatel4 16:34, 15 April 2008 (PDT)

I would suggest maybe following the model used for podcasts. There would be a top-level page called interviews that would be similar to Portal:Official Lost Podcast. You would then list individual interviews in tables below that and link to something like "Michael Giacchino Interview/February 28, 2008" where the date is the date of the interview. I think the forums are actually the better place to ask for questions though it may be possible to create a notice somewhere else annoucing it (maybe on the main page). What I would suggest is planning a first interview as a test to see how it goes.
As far as approvals go, I dont know of any policies that disallow what you are doing and all the feedback to your idea has been positive so far which I think you could take as an initial go-head. What you may want to do next is create a few sandbox pages with a made-up interview to show people what you intend the pages to look like. You should also look carefully at the feedback you have already received (i.e. maybe take a look at how Heroes Wiki has done it). But I really don't see anything in the way of doing what you want to do. Dharmatel4 11:24, 16 April 2008 (PDT)
Hey, I love the interview concept. Although, I don't think you're promoting it enough because it only has about two questions submitted so far. Maybe it should be a "Latest News" item. --Blueeagleislander 00:00, 27 April 2008 (PDT)
Oh, okay. Well at least you're getting questions from the forums. --Blueeagleislander 03:23, 27 April 2008 (PDT)

Re:Interview

Hey thanks for your message, so cool that you've got an interview opportunity. Questions... erm, well there's loads of narrative ones under the TLE page subsection "Remaining questions". However, they're more writer questions than actor ones. I think though one thing I'd like to know is how much backstory Jamie was given for the role (in particular concerning her past, mother who died and stuff). Also, how was filming for her video blogs (as many were handheld and stuff - was it very different from usual studio type work). And erm, was she on call throughout the experience in case she was needed for plot seaming (so like if there was a mistake, did they second unit her video or an audio with her to tie up possible goofs, etc). That'd be cool to know about. Thanks again for asking, and please link me to the transcript when its available! --Nickb123 (Talk) 05:06, 15 May 2008 (PDT)
