Userbox

Hey I never saw your userbox comment until now. Thanks, I'll check it out --Nickb123 (Talk) 09:36, 25 August 2006 (PDT)

Sorry ignore me I thought you'd made the comment a while ago for some reason --Nickb123 (Talk) 09:39, 25 August 2006 (PDT)
You'll have to humour me cause I'm not as advanced as you by far but, on your Template:Userboxtop its basically just all the color stuff condensed into an easier formula right? So when you've added that, where do you then place the actual content for the userbox? Or are they just two separate templates that work with each other? --Nickb123 (Talk) 16:39, 25 August 2006 (PDT)
Use all them together like this (leave lines blank to get defaults):
{{userboxtop
| align =
| backgroundcolor =
| bordercolor =
| extra-css =
| textcolor =
| toptext =
}}
{{userbox1}}
{{userbox2}}
{{userboxbreak}}
you can also insert custom code on any line you want
{{userbox3innewsection}}
{{userboxbottom}}

  • Thanks. Is that worth adding to the template itself? Or was it some formatting issue specific to my page only? -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T11:49, 6 September 2006 (PDT)
  • Thanks again, I will experiment with that. BTW come drop by irc. We're experimenting with it (see suggestions subforum in forums), and skks has already come by. I want to op more sysops.

This Week on LOST section

Any chance you can give me a hand with your suggestions, I'm still learning most of the things you've suggested! --plkrtn 06:08, 8 September 2006 (PDT)

Its done now, saves me doing it later, except for putting the episode names in of course! --plkrtn 17:45, 8 September 2006 (PDT)
I'm just playing at the moment. I'll change it again later! --plkrtn 02:16, 11 September 2006 (PDT)

Transcripts

Please check the talk of page Transcripts, I'd like to discuss something. --PandoraX 13:38, 8 September 2006 (PDT)

Jabbr, can you please explain your objection to transcripts in that page, please? I think you must be misunderstanding something. Suil owns the site, and Spooky is the "free agent" (nonstaff fan) who writes them. Both have said it is fine to "mirror" them on lostpedia, and ABC has open copyright on it. So I'm not sure what the objection is? --PandoraX 14:16, 8 September 2006 (PDT)

Deleted character pages

I know they hadn't been confirmed, but did you really have to delete all of those new character pages I made (Colleen, Azi, etc.)? Couldn't you have just locked them for now? --SilvaStorm

Sorry, no. Please see the policy. --   Jabberwock    talk    contribs    email   - 09:45, 10 September 2006 (PDT)

Accepted/Rejected Featured Articles

Hey could we do a change on the accepted and rejected nominations for FAotW? The outcome page is swiftly getting too long. I think it would be easier to have, for instance, the staff was accepted for featured article during week 39. Nominated by _____, and supported by _____, _____ - the article was creditted for its layout, good intro summary etc. Similarly, a bad article could have descriptions like it was agreed that the lack of images, poor grammar, and lack of flair were the reasons for the rejection. That way, editors know the jist of why some articles are accepted and some aren't, and learn what makes a good article. Just pasting the discussion for each nomination I think is just a bit too archivey --Nickb123 (Talk) 07:43, 11 September 2006 (PDT)

We can make more layers of archive when it becomes necessary. I don't think it's too long yet. The page is only about 24k. We should be focusing on the content. The archives of the nominations and rejections are only there for historical purposes. --   Jabberwock    talk    contribs    email   - 20:32, 11 September 2006 (PDT)
Yes of course, but I just mean doing just a small summary rather than pasting the voting process would make for easier reading, and I don't mind doing that myself, as long as I know I have permission --Nickb123 (Talk) 04:54, 12 September 2006 (PDT)

Page moves

Hey Jabberwock, I have a quick question for you. Can only SysOps move pages, or can anybody? And if anybody can,how do you do it? Thanks... --Marik7772003 18:24, 17 September 2006 (PDT)

Rewrites

Thanks, I'll try to do a couple more of them in the next few days but I probably won't be able to do all of them. --NSHS07 13:56, 20 September 2006 (PDT)

Hey, are all the rewrites really necessary? I can see if you wanted to do a cleanup of the bullets, but bullets keep things much more organized. Things are a lot easier to find if they're listed in bullets instead of jumbled up in a paragraph. --Fezir 14:43, 20 September 2006 (PDT)

As this wiki matures, I believe it is important that the content matures as well. I believe that bullets are extrememly helpful and I'm not opposed to having them in the articles, especially shorter ones. --   Jabberwock    talk    contribs    email   - 14:57, 20 September 2006 (PDT)
  • Disagree with Fezir that bullets are easier. Our bullet lists are notoriously chaotic: usually they are a unordered mishmash written with different priorities and criteria and sources by different editors. Any attempts at reorganization tend to be half-hearted, and in the long run, self-defeating as the retention of the list format simply encourages more bullets to be haphazardly added. In some cases, bullets or numbered lists may be appropriate, but should not be the default for the primary design of the article. Agreed with Jabber that short articles with bullets sometimes cannot be helped, but that mature articles with more content should go to the next level, and this shift will reflect well on Lostpedia as a whole.-- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T16:06, 20 September 2006 (PDT)
I think that all the main character articles need to be re-written for clarity, either by getting rid of some of the bullets or making them more detailed and clear. But some of them like Shannon or Boone who are already dead I think should be put as paragraphs --NSHS07 15:29, 20 September 2006 (PDT)
  • GJ on the call for rewrites. Would you consider explaining this drive in the forums? -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T16:06, 20 September 2006 (PDT)

Redirects

Apologies for the misunderstandings on the redirects. My intention was a usability issue, i.e. finding articles. When I first joined Lostpedia, many common and important articles (such as the Episode Guide) were inexcusably not easy to find, due to the lack of redirects (such as "Episode"), or lack of redirects for certain capitalization types (especially for articles which were erroneously capitalized as proper nouns, when they were not such). As per your recent reversions, and concerns about live links to misspellings in extant articles, I am no longer making misspelling based redirects. Afterwards, sorry for the most recent redirect, my rationale was that I had considered that a common mis-spacing issue (and therefore a usability issue) rather than an outright misspelling. I saw that you disapproved of some numeral-based redirects, athough we currently have some (e.g. Lost Season Two vs Lost Season 2) that I believe are useful; perhaps the rationale there is that those are very high profile pages. There are still a few redirects that I would suggest based on capitalization and spacing issues, e.g. emilie de ravin, and Emilie De Ravin, and even Emilie Deravin. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T17:16, 22 September 2006 (PDT)

So, Jabberwock, how's Premiere Night gonna go tonite? Will the Tale of Two Cities page be unlocked, or will just sysops edit it? Moving pages

You recently suspended me for moving pages, and the reason I did this is because, like Wikipedia, it ignores "The"'s (unless it's in a title). For some reason I do not have the option to move any pages, as it does not appear on the top row of bars (article, discussion, edit, etc.). Why is this? I thought I would be helping by moving the pages, but apparently you looked at it as vandalism. I am sorry if it appeared that way, so please respond to this on my talk page. --SilvaStorm

You did not move pages. You created new ones, copied the content, then redirected the old page. This destroys the edit history for the article. Moves need to be proposed using the rename template. Most articles are locked down so they can only be moved by sysops. You need to discuss these changes first. Also, keep in mind that this is not Wikipedia and their rules and style guides to not always apply here. Most places are named with a "The" in the title because they are proper nouns. For example, in the last episode they specifically called the new DHARMA station "The Hydra", not "Hydra" or "Hydra Station". --   Jabberwock    talk    contribs    email   - 22:06, 5 October 2006 (PDT)
I know you won't like me saying this, but gee - thanks for ruining the episode for me before I see it. --SilvaStorm

Hi! I just saw | this friendly post you made a while back on Lost Wikia, and I wanted to thank you for it. I was thinking, if you want to be an admin on Lost Wikia (and this goes for all the admins here), I can set that, so that we might be able to take care of this or similar problems together.--Jimbo Wales 07:18, 7 October 2006 (PDT)

Protecting Season 3 page.

Hey. Today Season 3's page became unprotected.
You made it protected again after a new user added unconfirmed episodes. I think that this action isn't fair for users who want to contribute.
I suggest that you'll unprotect the page (again). I obligate to revert the page from now-on, if anyone adds unconfirmed episodes. I just want the page to be open for edits again.
Thanks, Obi-Dan Kenobi 19:23, 13 October 2006 (PDT)

Sorry, I don't agree. As you can see from the few hours it was left unprotected users already added unconfirmed information to the page. Since updates are only done about once per week to this page when ABC puts out a press release, I don't see the need to have it unprotected. If you would like to update a section, please let a sysop know and we can coordinate a time to unlock it for you, or move content from the discussion page to the article. --   Jabberwock    talk    contribs    email   - 08:03, 14 October 2006 (PDT)

Theory policy...

Re: Theory Sections

So it's ok for another user to post a non-confirmed theory into the article, based on no evidence, that was never discussed on the Discussion page, but it's NOT ok for me to comment on it right then and there?!

Come on! What kind of a policy enforcement is that? Either all the theories get discussed and screened BEFORE getting posted in the article, or you delete them from the article, along with the comments disproving it, during a cleanup. Blaming everything on people who are just trying to flag already posted theories as invalid makes no sense.

If an Anarchist like myself things it's acceptable for us to make move requests of SysOps instead of doing it ourselves, chances are it's a pretty tenable situation as is. LostPedia is not Wikipedia. MediaWiki is fine. This site seems to be working really well. XSG 21:19, 21 October 2006 (PDT)
[[Lostpedia:Lostpedia is not Wikipedia|You've given me a very good idea.]] That makes three regular editors interested in discordianism. crazy stuff. --kaini. 21:25, 21 October 2006 (PDT)
Yeah, Willy's request is because he is a vandal, but for other users, should they come across this... I think the explanation is because when a vandal moves a page, it essentially deletes the history, which would be a bad thing for a wiki, and something which can't be reverted. --PandoraX 11:07, 22 October 2006 (PDT)

Stephen King Summary...

Alright, this is what I came up for my first write-up within 10 minutes. Feel free to edit or fix whatever you want:

  • Stephen King, a world-famous author best known for books that set a new standard for the horror genre, has made an enduring impact, not just on the Lostpedia community, but in the Lost series for the past three seasons. Whether it be a subtle flash of King’s Hearts in Atlantis sitting on Jack Shephard’s bookshelf or the appearance of the Nozz-A-La cola brand on Henry Gale’s balloon in season two, it’s become increasingly obvious that Lost’s creators have a fix for King and unique style of storytelling. Read on to discover some of the all too coincidental things that Lost and Stephen King’s dark worlds hold in common.--MightyRearranger 11:52, 23 October 2006 (PDT)

Prespoilers in theories sections?

Hey Jabr, got a question for ya... I've seen people edit in prespoilers into theories... I don't feel like this is appropriate, especially when they come without tags (and makes it less of a theory, since it's based on spoilers, kind of jumping the gun). For example, check the bottom of "Him" theories (last line about X-rays). Just wondering what the official word on using that info in theories sections is. --PandoraX 21:00, 27 October 2006 (PDT)

the prespoilers pages are truly awful. bad grammar, bad use of canon, first-person... just awful. needs a policy or stricter enforcing of one. --kaini. 21:05, 27 October 2006 (PDT)

Yeah, I may have to go in there more often just to keep a check on that also; I've avoided them in the past to avoid the bad spoilers. Hey Kaini or whoever, Santa & I are in chat now. --PandoraX 21:15, 27 October 2006 (PDT)

as am i; i really need to download mIRC; on a LP-related note, some screenshots might be nice; the javascript warning varies between IE and FF --21:24, 27 October 2006 (PDT)
I personally believe that "pre-spoilers" don't belong on the wiki, but could be discussed on the forums (if appropriately titled with a spoiler warning). I think the concept is something that got started pre-season three, and it worked well for dealing with spoilers and foilers for the entire season. I don't think it's needed for each episode. I personally don't even read the pages. As for the theory sections, every editor needs to clean them up in accordance with LP:TP. My take on it is that a theory like the one you gave as an example should be removed since it's not backed up with any facts. --   Jabberwock    talk    contribs    email   - 10:38, 28 October 2006 (PDT)
  • Agreed:
  1. No prespoilers or spoilers in Theory sections
  2. No more episode-specific prespoiler articles; put any such content in forums or the season article: Lost Season 3/prespoilers
  3. Continue locking pre-broadcast episode articles;
  4. Consider protecting post-broadcast episode articles against a) Unregistered editors b) Newly-registered editors if possible
-- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T16:51, 28 October 2006 (PDT)
  • I'd be fine with the first three. Overall, I think LP needs to make the spoiler policy more fleshed out and more visible. We should consider some sort of "don't post spoilers here" template, probably with a link to the prespoilers page, to put on upcoming article pages as well as pages for characters set to appear in future episodes. Another consideration is the early broadcast in Canada, if users continue to post spoilers during the US broadcast ([2]), it might make sense to wait longer to unlock episode pages or to block specific users if they are going spoiler crazy. --Minderbinder 07:03, 29 October 2006 (PST)

      • Hey Jabbr, I'll do this for the regular images, but I do not believe that this is necessary or really appropriate in every single little thumbnail (as you can see, I will have over 200 when I'm through). To be honest, I think we as a community have gotten a little oversensitive over the 'copyright' issue, and that there are some misunderstandings about fair use policies at the root. You can see where I discuss this in detail on Matthew Fenton's talk page: User_talk:MatthewFenton#On_Copyrights...; I've corresponded with legal counsel for Disney personally regarding this, as admin for lost.cubit.net, and so I feel fairly comfortable not putting disclaimers on everything, when there are already general image disclaimers on the main page and photo upload pages. --PandoraX 15:04, 31 October 2006 (PST)
        • Personally, I agree with you on this. I think that in light of Disney now hosting their own wiki, we should be extra careful though and comply with fair use whenever possible. It doesn't hurt to add licensing information to our images. --   Jabberwock    talk    contribs    email   - 15:07, 31 October 2006 (PST)
