I was late to the LOST sensation. By the time the second season was on a roll, I had just picked up the first season and tried to watch it. We rented the first half of that season and didn't rent the second half, just leaving this void for a long time. Then, later on I bought both seasons and watched them. It wasn't until they started the 7th episode of season 3 that I was actually caught up with the rest of the world. LOST has been a wonderful addition (addiction?) to my life, and I wanted some place to discuss my views and theories about the show. I figured this would be as good a place as the next. The sheer scope of what has happened (and will happen according to the Season 3 finale) makes it difficult to begin. So, I suppose it would be easiest to begin at the beginning and work my way from there. The first episode: The pilot. This is what started a television show that would topple all others in opinion. It is in this episode, within the first seconds of it that we meet our first lostie: JACK SHEPARD. When he opens his eyes, a lot of folks speculate that it is not his pupil that dialates, but is in fact the smoke monster flying away, and we merely see a reflection of this and assume it's just his pupil. I've heard that the producers have denied such alligations, but I also believe that they know much more about the show than they let on. Part of me does believe it was the smoke monster. What I think happened was that Jack had not only been pulled out of the plane in mid air and landed in the forest, but also that the impacted had killed him. The smoke monster, being the supposed judge and jury of the island, flashed his fancy light at Jack and had reckoned he was okay (you know...for ratings :P) and decided to actually bring him back to life (Hence the odd noise heard immediatly before Jack opens his eyes). Jack has always been odd to me. At the beginning, he was sort of thrown (thrown hard) into leadership, and has always resented it throughout the show. For a time, he embraced his newly assigned position and attempted to be the leader his dad always said he couldn't be. However, around when the hatch was open is when I realized that that's all he wanted to do for the time being. This hatch, this machine in the jungle has been presented to them and Jack couldn't have cared less. Granted, every single one of them has a certain degree of trust issues that makes them so apprehensive and (for lack of a better word) untrusting. It's not really a BIG surprise that Jack would rather continue doing what he has been doing since the crash than run around and search for answers when you think of all the things he's been through. Once captured by the others, though, that's when I began to lose hope for dear Jack. I had noticed he'd lost his mind during the transition a little bit, causing him to look like the enemy (whoever they may be...). At the same time, I'm sure he wasn't angry at anyone but himself. He merely was taking it out on others because he didn't know any better. After all, if you were planning an attack that got seriously compromised and resulted in the capture of you and two of your friends, wouldn't you be a little angry with yourself for being fooled so easily. No one likes feeling like fool and Jack is no different. As for the ten days he spent with the others. I'm sure during this time he had had sex with Juliet, of that I have no doubts. Partly in response to witnessing Kate and Sawyer together and probably partly due to their bond they shared during surgery. Finally, the "Flashfoward" of him a complete and utter mess. I was %110 delighted when they revealed it to be him after getting off the island. So (for the time being) Jack, Doctor, Husband, Leader, Other, and complete Trainwreck has gained and lossed and regained my respected over these past seasons. I can only hope he gains a little bit of faith and belief in the island for season four--DrodJenkins 12:56, 11 June 2007 (PDT)
