Well yes if you KNEW that Desmond wouldn't press the button at the exact moment that the plane was over the island AND that the countdown was on such a schedule that you would even be eligible to push the button (i.e. inside 108 minute window) when the plane was going over. AND somehow you KNEW that this person would survive a plane breaking apart in three pieces and if they somehow survived that, that something random like a piece of luggage hitting them in the head wouldn't kill them... then yeah, I guess that makes good sense.
