Mark as patrolled

A feature for patrolling Recent Changes seems to be enabled, but not quite right.

See http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Patrolled_edit

When I look at Special:Recentchanges, most edits are marked with a red "!". I click on an edit, and I'm given the option "Mark as patrolled". When I click this link, I'm told the edit has been marked as patrolled and the red "!" disappears. This is intended to help those patrolling RecentChanges for vandalism - you can see what someone else has marked and skip duplicated work. However, I can mark my own edits as patrolled! I'm sure I'm not supposed to have the privileges to do this... TortureMeSayid 14:46, 21 May 2006 (PDT)

Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I enabled $wgOnlySysopsCanPatrol = true; We don't do much patrolling, but we should probably start. --Admin 16:39, 21 May 2006 (PDT)
Indeed, the last month or so it has been quite difficult to keep track of all the edits and marking "legal" edits patrolled would help this a lot. This also really needs to be a sysop-only feature, so it seems things are on the right track. --skks 04:33, 22 May 2006 (PDT)

sandbox

i've created a LostPedia:Sandbox page. i'm not familiar enough with wiki to make it a 'special page', but creating it is a start, eh? with the influx of new users, it could be useful. --kaini. 19:59, 21 May 2006 (PDT)

i'd like it if you had a look at my comment on the LostPedia_talk:Sandbox page. couldn't be that hard to implement. --kaini. 20:13, 27 May 2006 (PDT)

Featured article

I think this would be a good idea. With the new main page change maybe we could move some stuff around to fit this in. We could do an article of the month or of the week. I think we could make the Lost Experience banner half the page across and do the FA the other half. -- <<Novajoe23>> 08:26, 22 May 2006 (PDT)

I'll have a fiddle around now, and see what I can come up with... --Plkrtn 05:56, 23 May 2006 (PDT)
I also think we could have the users nominate articles to be featured and have them vote on them. -- <<Novajoe23>> 07:42, 23 May 2006 (PDT)

Clarification on theories

Thanks for your clarification on what should be the basis for a viable theory. Much appreciated, especially because we seem to share the same perspective on the subject. --Xsg 22:27, 22 May 2006 (PDT)

My account

As you may have noticed my account has been blocked. This is because someone found out my password and changed it to one I don't know. I need that account back but for now we should keep it blocked because a SysOp could do a lot of damage to LostPedia if he begins vandalizing. You may have noticed that he banned Peephole for no reason whatsoever (GEOH later unblocked him). He also unblocked The123 who was clearly a vandal. Is there any way that you, as the creator, can find out what the password is now? --Novajoe24 10:13, 24 May 2006 (PDT)

Novajoe23

Is doing loads of vandalism. I'm assuming this is like what happened above-a SysOp's account was stolen. We've got a BIG problem, from what I see. -- Ramirez Selvarn 15:23, 24 May 2006 (PDT)

I can see that... I hope this stops and works out in the end.     Nusentinsaino     talk    contribs    email

Is it over?

This has been a nightmare come true. I think a voting is in order. whether another iteration of Novajoe regains sysop privileges or not. It's safe to say we don't ever want to pass this ever again. †††GodEmperorOfHell††† --18:12, 24 May 2006 (PDT)

Sorry to say this but

a) how do we know that Novajoe24 is actually the original Novajoe. b) Having an easy to crack, or telling someone your admin password... bad ideas. I honestly am wondering how long Novajoe24 should wait before another pop at sysop -- Plkrtn  talk  contribs  email  18:14, 24 May 2006 (PDT)

It's over for now. I think our SysOp group is pretty strong right now. At the point we need to add another, I'll be open to suggestions from other SysOps. --Admin 18:30, 24 May 2006 (PDT)
I'm glad you popped in. I left a voicemail in CA, and sent a few emails to various addresses in an attempt to reach you. Did any of those work? Or did you just happen by (thankfully!!!)? Just curious. --Circeus 18:39, 24 May 2006 (PDT)
I have been traveling... Today, I was in New York City, Philly and now in D.C. :) Sorry it took so long.. I didn't realize the problem was as severe as it was. --Admin 18:50, 24 May 2006 (PDT)
No problem. That you're here now is good enough. --Circeus 18:52, 24 May 2006 (PDT)
Okay, so... if we can verify that Novajoe23/24 is the real Novajoe, then I think the responsible thing to do is to treat him as an adult, give a strong warning about password security, and give him Sysop again. The hitch: I can't think of a single way to verify Novajoe's identity unless a sysop has met him in person before. Likelihood: slim. XSG 18:37, 24 May 2006 (PDT)
Regarding Novajoe24's ban - if you compare his posts in talk and in edit comments with those of faux Novajoe23, they're vastly different in style. 24 uses 'you', 23 uses 'u', and 24 seems to have much better grammar and diction, to name two differences. My 2c is that Novajoe24 is the real deal... but as you say, there's no way to be 100% cert. kaini. 18:41, 24 May 2006 (PDT)
Better safe than sorry. For now, I'm not making anyone a new SysOp. Please take the time to make sure your password is strong and not a dictionary word nor one that can be easily guessed. --Admin 18:46, 24 May 2006 (PDT)
Most common passwords:
Identical to, or a slight modification of the username. This is very bad.
Swear words.
Pet/child/spouse names.
Dictionary words.
Words/names related to the content that the password is securing.
Good passwords:
Two dictionary words with unique capitalization and numbers/symbols thrown in.
acronyms to obscure information, like poetry or your favorite quote.
complete randomness.

It's a tough call overall. 24 has only used IPs: 71.225.79.49, and 204.108.200.16. 23 has used IPs: 71.225.79.49, 204.108.200.16, and 69.136.204.14. If you look at the logs it looks like the attack came from the 69.136.204.14 address. I banned all 3 addresses for now, because in looking at them its damn hard to be sure. 71.225.79.49 is Comcast in NJ (United States, Mt. Laurel, New Jersey), 204.108.200.16 is Chesconet in PA (United States, Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania), and 69.136.204.14 is Comcast in NJ (United States, Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey). It's a shame to see this happen. --Circeus 18:52, 24 May 2006 (PDT)

It's clear 24 and faux 23 know each other in person. I really don't want to dig any dirt,I don't know the circumstances in which the interchange happened, but it's clear they have some personal issues to tackle and took all of us for a ride. †††GodEmperorOfHell††† --18:59, 24 May 2006 (PDT)

User:Recurr

...has repeatedly added addition and multiplication tables of The Numbers to that page. Despite repeated warnings, he has not justified himself on any talk page-is there somkething a SysOp can do about this? -- Ramirez Selvarn 14:19, 25 May 2006 (PDT)

I've found a lot of his recent edits concerning as well. I think maybe he's just a new user and hasn't gotten the feel for the culture of this site yet. GateKeeper 14:31, 25 May 2006 (PDT)

Novajoe23 email

Not sure if anyone else got one, but I got an email from Novajoe23 (novajoe23_AT_yahoo.com). I have no way to confirm if its really him or not. But he says he got back his password, and is looking to be unblocked. His account no longer has Admin privs, so I don't personally think there's any harm in doing this. But I wanted to put it up for discussion rather than just doing it. I'm out of town tonight and back tomorrow, but you don't have to wait for me, my vote is to give him a shot as a regular user and see what happens. --Circeus 07:03, 26 May 2006 (PDT)

I've gotten those emails too.. I don't have any way of knowing who the real Joe is, and I'm not really willing to take a chance on it. I don't mind if his account get's unblocked, but he won't be getting SysOp status anytime soon. --Admin 13:13, 26 May 2006 (PDT)
Okay, since I've got your nod, I'll unblock him and we'll keep an eye, if anything damaging occurs (as in trashing pages, since they can't be deleted), he'll go back to being banned. --Circeus 11:17, 27 May 2006 (PDT)
I got another email today lambasting us for blocking him and saying its unfair.

It really smells of the hacker bullshitting his way back to cause damage to me. I say keep him blocked. He shouldn't be using his password in a public place like that if he doesn't want it to be hacked so easily. -- Plkrtn  talk  contribs  email  06:31, 29 May 2006 (PDT)

It's not bullshitting. I can't believe you guys are turning on me like this. Especially GEOH. Here, where I created a new account when my original one was blocked, he said that he would support me if you guys voted to give me the sysop rights back, and he even refers to me as his "dearest friend". The guy who stole my account was just an asshole who thought it would be funny to try to destroy something that means a lot to me. -- <<Novajoe23>> 13:11, 29 May 2006 (PDT)
And one more thing - the guy who stole my account to use it for vandalism did not even know how to sign a message on a talk page - let alone use the signature that I created. That should at least be some proof that it's me again and that the vandal is gone. Besides, if you look on the Main Page's history you can see that he left a message just before the sysop rights were taken away and just before I paid him to get the account back that he was giving the account back, in his extremely poor grammar. -- <<Novajoe23>> 13:11, 29 May 2006 (PDT)
How could we possibly know that the real Novajoe23 wrote the above statements? Given the apparent lack of consideration for keeping a password secure, I hope that the real Novajoe23 would be understanding if we were distrustful of anyone claiming to be Novajoe23. It's an unfortunate situation, but I can't think of another way to guarantee that security is maintained. XSG 19:52, 30 May 2006 (PDT)

GodEmperorofHell

I'm getting a little tired of GodEmperorofHell editing major categories, and marking articles for deletion without even making any posts on the Talk pages of articles, he just marks relevant things for deletion without even discussing it on the talk page. He works hard, but he also rubs a lot of people up the wrong way. -- Plkrtn  talk  contribs  email  06:55, 28 May 2006 (PDT)

We need to come up with a delete policy. Some of the articles he deleted probably should be deleted, but others I can see a reason for keeping them around. I'd suggest that unless it's obvious vandalism the page should be marked for deletion and then a discussion can determine whether to keep or delete. I don't want this to escalate into SysOp edit wars. We need to find a way to be adults and work this out. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. --Admin 11:02, 28 May 2006 (PDT)

Cleaning

Hey just wondering how I can nominate pages for cleaning - I've been trying to figure out how to do it for a while now. The page I am namely referring to is the electromagnetism section that seems very outdated now that the Season 2 finale has aired. Sorry if this post should be in another area, other than minor edits to theories, I'm very much a novice at all this wiki business - nickb123 May 28th

Multiple languages for LostPedia

Hey Admin!

Is it possible that the LostPedia can have multiple languages like Wikipedia? So, that you can select a language from the left side. That would be great. A german, spanish, french, etc. LostPedia. What do you think about this idea? cya. --Abu-Dun 06:50, 29 May 2006 (PDT)

Yeah, I share Abu-Dun's opinion. There are hundrets of German, French etc. fans and this page is the best page on the www. The amount of members could explode, next to the quality of the articles. --muellcraft 21:43 MEZ, 29th May 2006
I will see what it takes to setup support for additional languages. I think we're now large enough that we could probably pull off additional languages. Thanks for the suggestion. --Admin 18:21, 29 May 2006 (PDT)

Ooops

i just moments ago created 2 accounts before i realized what my first account name actually is. i probably could have avoided this if i could get my user name emailed to me by entering my email address, but it looks like multiple accounts can be created with just one email address. some how i never recieved my first mailing reguarding my registration. anyway.. GURT and Briang (not BrianG) are 'dummy' accounts created by me and can be deleted. sorry.--BrianG 03:00, 30 May 2006 (PDT)

Hi, I just received 3739 password reminders from Lostpedia in my inbox. Why did this happen? THis sounds grave and could affect not only myself, please help. --†††GodEmperorOfHell††† 19:39, 30 May 2006 (PDT)

I got it, someone has tried to break into my account. It was a dictionary attack. --†††GodEmperorOfHell††† 19:41, 30 May 2006 (PDT)

I just checked in WHOIS and guess who is trying to steal my account? none other than Faux Novajoe. I am outside the US, do you know any actions I can take? --†††GodEmperorOfHell††† 19:48, 30 May 2006 (PDT)

You could contact the ISP of the machine that is making the requests.. but it's probably an open proxy or something. I will look into adding some tools that will prevent dictionary attacks.. I might add a CAPTCHA system to filter automated attempts. --Admin 00:57, 31 May 2006 (PDT)

Parodic Articles

A subject has arisen lately, I think it is a good idea to accept parodic articles (properly labelled and categorized) We already have the excellent Signs You Work For Dharma. We could set some ground rules:

  1. That parodies are, as put by the Wikipedia article, to poke affectionate fun at LOST.
  2. Contain no racist or otherwise crude material.
  3. No toilet or childish humor.
  4. Must abide to the normal rules for articles.

I have always advocated for the inclusion of parodies, and having a good stash of funny entries could actually make us an excellent place to hang around. --†††GodEmperorOfHell††† 05:22, 31 May 2006 (PDT)

Let's go for it. There's room in the Lostpedia for some decent parodies. --Admin 09:30, 31 May 2006 (PDT)
Can we create a special namespace for parody, so they don't come up in regular searches? XSG 15:58, 29 June 2006 (PDT)

Location of nav boxes

Hey there admin, hows it goin, I can see that on the left there are 4 boxes, (Navagation, Search, Bandwidth money and toolbox) I was thinking if it's ok to put the toolbox ontop of the advertisment box, it would look nicer, thanks! --Mo 10:05, 31 May 2006 (PDT)

Lost Experience

Sorry for putting this here, couldn't figure out anywhere else to put this. Should DJ Dan's entry be added to the Lost Experience box on the main page? I think that it makes sense, considering most of the other players seem to be added to the front page. And what about Speaker's page? Thanks! --Jujo 12:10, 31 May 2006 (PDT)

  • I support this idea. Now that The Hanso Foundation's site is gone, DJ Dan is really our "eyes in the sky" (next to Rachel Blake). I also think that Speaker's page should be added, to disprove all the scam sites that have been popping up lately. --Gateboy42 11:49, 5 July 2006 (PDT)
  • Oh, talking about the lost experience, I'm getting a little worried about the clues-by-date page. In the past few days, it seems to be taking more and more time for people to update. For example, the July 7th post was not created until today, July 8th, which has not even been created yet. It's 7:06 here on the east coast. not sure if this whole "Lostdude815" thing is keeping everybody busy...--Gateboy42 16:10, 8 July 2006 (PDT)
You can create the page yourself whenever you're ready to do it!, just go to the page and save the first copy. Let me know if you need any help with it. --Admin 16:24, 8 July 2006 (PDT)

Upgrade MediaWiki

I'd like to suggest/request an upgrade to the [latest stable version] of MediaWiki, something in the 1.6.6 range. This version adds some very useful features, among them the ability to define default values for transclude parameters. See [release notes] for details.

If there is any way I can help with this, I'd like to. I haven't been active on Lostpedia long enough for sysop possibility, but I do know my way around a Unix system. Dmuk § 17:23, 1 June 2006 (PDT)

Hello, Thanks for your suggestion. I will be doing the upgrade as soon as I roll up the custom changes, I made to the scripts to combat some vandals, into a wiki module. I don't have an ETA on this, but it's something I'm working on. --Admin 18:27, 1 June 2006 (PDT)

Major edit and growth slowing down?

Is it just me or does it seem that as the seasosn ended there was a MAJOR slow down of large edits, contributions, article creates, and even discussion. We should attempt to promote more growth if we want to surrvive during the "off-season". There still is a plethora of information that needs to be cataloged catagorized and articled. May I suggest a section off of the main page dedicated to illustrating how users can easily help lostpedia grow? For example "This week's Project(or focus): Character background, timeline, The Lost Experience, cultural references, or Charlie Pace." Or, "Reruns all summer! Take this oppertunity to check and double-check articles." Things of that sort are small but go a long way when we have a ton of users aimlessly browsing. Let's get organized and on task. Administrators will have more of a job to do but in the long run it would be much better for the lostpedia community.--Jasoncarubia 13:04, 8 June 2006 (PDT)

I think we really need a recent events or community portal (just one, not both) to feature special attention articles, we have two humdred stubs and they have largely left unattended. --†††GodEmperorOfHell††† 09:14, 8 June 2006 (PDT)
Traffic to the site is way down... I expected it would be. I'm going to setup a message board for us to discuss off season projects. It would be nice to have a list of goals to work on before next season starts. --Admin 02:11, 9 June 2006 (PDT)
It would definitely help to have a portal or some other way to say what needs attention. As it is, I'm reduced to just hitting the "Random Page" button and seeing if the article needs any work. -- Ramirez Selvarn 07:50, 9 June 2006 (PDT)
Yeah, that's what I do too.--LOCI! 17:23, 30 June 2006 (PDT)

INCONSISTENCIES

This site has a section for BLOOPERS and CONTINUITY ERRORS but seemingly it could use a section for INCONSISTENCIES. There seem to be a large number of inconsistent 'facts' that simply don't fit into the overall pattern of things. I have commented on a number of them on pages where the 'facts' are presented, but pulling them together in one place, perhaps with a link back to where the 'fact' appears, would be a better way to allow comment and possible resolution. --Bkkpm 23:56, 30 June 2006 (PDT)

Hoaxes/Scams/Non-Cannon

Why does lostpedia maintain articles for information that has been CONFIRMED to be inaccurate? I think that any articles that are non-cannon, hoaxes, or scams can be deleted and/or condensed into an article or two listing them. Brian 12:11, 11 July 2006 (PDT)

Hey Brian, what examples do you have in mind? Most known hoaxes are deleted, though there is some fanon listed specifically as such, so that it won't be confused with canon. --PandoraX 16:30, 11 July 2006 (PDT)

Some kind of centralized forum/discussion/help desk?

I've always wondered about this at Lostpedia. WHen I need help, I find myself posting to someone's account who might know, or posting in a general page discussion, such as this one. You work your ass off for the betterment of the site (and not for personal glory), and then, when it's clear that there aren't enough active admins on the site, User:Admin picks someone that he thinks he can trust to continue doing the job well.
Right now, I believe Admin is pleased with the amount of Administration going on and has no intention of appointing another Admin until the situation changes. Lostpedia on Wikipedia

Was just wondering if you had an idea of what was on the lostpedia page at Wiki that justified its deletion. I would like to lodge a protest but am going to do it by the book, meaning I should first see the content that resulted the termination before I raise point. I've requested this information in the Deletion Review on wikipedia, but I have suspicions a reply may take a while / not be received. Any evidence you could give me for my little PI quest would be most useful --Nickb123 (Talk) 09:52, 4 August 2006 (PDT)

I've created a statement to use if I can get the deletion review to allow another review on Lostpedia, it'll take time to arrange if at all, but I've managed to produce a decent-ish opening argument. I'd like your ideas on what else to put in it, the more points to give, the higher the chances of it having an impact. Shall I email it you? --Nickb123 (Talk) 15:28, 5 August 2006 (PDT)
(in response to your post on nick's talk page) - in a way, i can understand why wikipedia are reluctant to include lostpedia as an article, or indeed a link. everyone here has a bias; we all devote time, attention and loving care to maintaining and improving pages on this site, and as a result we have a vested interest in getting an inclusion over there. the problem lies in the fact that a lot of sysops over there are very strict in applying the guidelines set out regarding notability. my personal opinion is that WP:WEB needs revision to deal with an internet where blogs, podcasts, et al are proliferating and becoming more notable by the day, but my personal opinion, or yours, or nick's don't count for much on a site like wiki with a zillion editors. what we need to to imo is gain more notability; get damon to mention us in a podcast, or get some significant mention on the fuselage, or get more media coverage. then we will have exposure from source(s) that wiki regards as official under policy - and then the situation will be reversed; rather than fighting to get a mention, editors will have a battle to get a page or a link removed, because we are notable under wiki's policies, and are entitled to a page. --kaini. 19:46, 5 August 2006 (PDT)
The "notability" thing is obviously one of the most important factors; I have included it in the statement I'm putting together. I will wait though to see if any more significant sources appear, like more from Speaker etc --Nickb123 (Talk) 01:31, 6 August 2006 (PDT)

SQL problem

hey, have a look at this: [1] mediawiki recognizes the and as a boolean search term, and doesn't like it, making this page unsearchable... --kaini. 10:39, 4 August 2006 (PDT)

Thanks, I'll look into this. --Admin 17:23, 4 August 2006 (PDT)

Checkuser group

Jajasoon should probably be added to this group unless you only want seasoned sysops to have access.    Jabberwock    talk    contribs    email   - 12:13, 9 August 2006 (PDT)

Suggestion

Hi Admin, I was browsing Wikipedia when I found this, [2]. I thought it would be cool (and more importantly, useful) if we had something similar to that. I think it's a good way to let people know if they have to keep their guards up against vandals. Just a suggestion, --Gateboy42 07:59, 17 August 2006 (PDT)

I cant get on LostPedia from one of my internet lines

Hello,

We have two internet lines into our house in the UK. One with NTL which works fine and allows me to access LostPedia, im using it to post this message.

The other line is with bulldog, the IP on it changes fairly often but at the moment its 84.9.163.165 . Whenever I use the bulldog line to access LostPedia I get the following screens depending which exact URL I got to.

It seems strange that I only get this from the one particular line so im thinking this might be a hosting/routing problem with whoever hosts this site.

I first noticed that lostpedia wasnt working for me about three days ago and assumed it was temporary or being worked on.

Sorry, I did look for an alternative place to post that but couldnt find anywhere, Im still having this issue. --TimmyWimmy 07:38, 18 August 2006 (PDT)

Also, tried from IP 84.9.176.175 and got the same error. --TimmyWimmy 08:05, 18 August 2006 (PDT)

We're upgrading some software on the server right now. Thanks --Admin 12:05, 18 August 2006 (PDT)

I've cleared all my cache's and I still have the same problem. The first line that we have is an NTL cable line with a fixed IP, I can access lostpedia fine from it. The second line with have is a bulldog adsl line, the IP changes every now and again but always within a fixed range, at the moment its 84.9.176.175. I am using the NTL line to write you this message and at this exact moment in time (i switched computers while writing this) I cant get onto lostpedia from the bulldog line.

I can get on forum.lostpedia.com from both lines, but the main wiki www.lostpedia.com only from the NTL one. The bulldog and NTL DNS servers both report www.lostpedia.com as:

Server: ns5.bulldogdsl.com Address: 212.158.248.5

Non-authoritative answer: Name: www.lostpedia.com Address: 64.255.167.253

and:

Server: cache1.ntli.net Address: 194.168.4.100

Non-authoritative answer: Name: www.lostpedia.com Address: 64.255.167.253

So I cant really see why this should be happening. I have the same issue wether I use firefox or IE, I cant see how that would make a difference.

Admin, you say that you are making changes but I cant see why this problem would manifest its self like this, if changes were being made I'd expect everyone to have to same problem, unless the bulldog and NTL cache's of the DNS results were different but theyre not.

I kind of get the impression that this is some sort of routing problem. The only thing that I can think of apart from that is that maybe my bulldog IP or part of the bulldog IP block is banned from lostpedia? --TimmyWimmy 14:19, 18 August 2006 (PDT)

Yes, I believe that's one of the banned subnets. We had a lot of problems with users from that network. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. We may remove that block in the future. --Admin 23:46, 18 August 2006 (PDT)
