I'd like to talk about the "Smoke Monster" or (possibly) Cerberus. Since the pilot, I had always wondered what it might actually be. Here's a list of those things: - Some invisible force - A langolier (Stephen King) - A dinosaur (T-Rex) - A monster made of smoke
Who would've thought that last one was right? Man, I rule. Seriously, though, the part that thought it may have been a dinosaur had hoped and hoped it wasn't. Dinosaur, not only too obvious, was also very stupid. I've been reading a few forums about the smoke monster and how a few people were wanting it to be a dinosaur and thought the smoke monster idea was horrible. I pity these people for leaving their minds so closed to something different. And something different it was, listing as one of the most mysterious things on that island (save for the island itself) I enjoy everything about what the smoke monster(s) can do. I believe that there's definately more than one (possibly three like the three headed dog) and that they all act differently. For instance, if you listen to the one they find in the "Dark Territory" during the season one finale, it makes a different noise than the "Taxi Cab" version. It was more of a rusty gears grinding together noise. Also, notice that Locke (first enthusiastic about the monster) turned quite fearful to it. Perhaps, as you get closer to the "?" (Which I believe wasn't the pearl, but something they haven't found yet and just might answer quite a few questions) the smoke monsters get more volatile in order to protect what is there. I believe they are the cause of the dead people showing up as visions to everyone on the island (Jack's dad and so forth). Part of me thinks that Kate's horse, Sayid's cat, and Charlie's moth were actually real. Part of me thinks the horse may have escaped the Hydra (Seeing how there were sharks under observation by DHARMA, it's possible there were horses under observation) although, another part is reluctant to believe this seeing how Locke's dad had shown up out of nowhere. Something the smoke monsters do may cause people to appear and be very tangible. On the other hand, it could be something entirely different. I also forgot to talk about the spiders that showed up to do Nikki and Paulo (the redshirts) in. Some say they can here the "Taxi Cab" noise during that scene. I haven't looked into it, but my two cents on the subject are:
1) These are in fact a fabrication of a smoke monster. Possibly all the spiders had died on that island, seeing how dead people are the ones that seem to appear.
2) The spiders were attracted by the female spider in heat and the smoke monster was merely passing by.
Whatever it was, it's safe to say that there is going to be much more about the smoke monster in coming seasons.--DrodJenkins 13:22, 11 June 2007 (PDT)
