Throughout Lost there have been many rivalries, but none as big as the one between Jack Shephard and John Locke. There encounters have been over the issue of fate versus free will.

Season 1
- Locke helps Jack rescue a man with a leg trapped under a landing wheel. ("Pilot, Part 1")
- After rescuing Jack from falling over the edge of a cliff Locke helps Jack with his leadership problem. ("White Rabbit")
- Locke and Jack (with Boone and Kate) look for the recently kidnapped Charlie and Claire. ("All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues")
- Locke returns a badly injured Boone to Jack and lies about how Boone sustained his injuries. Boone soon dies and Jack blames Locke for the murder of Boone. ("Deus Ex Machina"), ("Do No Harm")
- Heading towards the Hatch Jack and Locke argue over destiny. ("Exodus, Part 2")
Season 2
- Locke and Jack argue about going into the Hatch. Locke eventually does against Jack's orders. ("Man of Science, Man of Faith")
- After learning about the button Locke believes it must be pushed, while Jack doesn't. Locke makes Jack be the first to start pushing it. ("Orientation")
- Locke and Jack agree that if the guns are needed, they'll talk about it first. After Sun's kidnapping Jack is about to get the guns, but Locke moved them causing them to agrue. ("The Long Con")
- After "Henry Gale" is brought to The Swan Locke changes the armory combination so Sayid can torture "Henry". Jack (against this) stops Locke from pushing the button until he gives up the combination.
- "Henry" tried to manipulate Locke against Jack by convincing Locke Jack was calling all the shots. ("Maternity Leave"), ("The Whole Truth"), ("Lockdown")
- After "Henry" is revealed to be an Other and Michael returns, Jack apologizes to Locke in an effort to collaborate and get the guns to fight The Others. ("Two for the Road")
Season 3
- Locke announces he'll lead a rescue party to find Jack, Kate, and Sawyer, who have been taken by The Others. But soon in the mission it's revealed he has an agenda of his own. ("Further Instructions"), ("Enter 77"), ("Par Avion")
- Locke blows up the sub when Jack and Juliet were to leave on it. ("The Man from Tallahassee")
- As Naomi is about to make the call to the freighter Locke throws a knife into her back. Jack and Locke have a standoff. Locke tries to convince Jack not to make the call, but Jack does and Locke walks away. ("Through the Looking Glass")
Season 4
- Locke returns to the survivors and, after a quick scuffle with Jack, warns the survivors that the people on the freighter are not there to save them. Some leave with Locke to the Barracks. ("The Beginning of the End")
- Four people from the freighter arrive to the island. Jack finds Daniel, Miles, and Frank. Locke finds Charlotte. ("Confirmed Dead")
- Jack sends Sayid, Kate, and Miles to the Barracks to retrieve Charlotte. After Locke captures Sayid a trade is negotiated - Miles for Charlotte. ("The Economist")
- Jack arrives at the Orchid to get Hurley. Locke is there and once again asks Jack to stay. But once Jack walks away Locke pleads with him to lie, to protect the island. ("There's No Place Like Home, Parts 2 & 3")
After the Island
- Locke leaves the island and visits Jack and tells him very bad things have occurred on the island since he's left and the Oceanic Six need to return. Soon, Locke dies (supposedly of suicide). Jack is upset over this and visits his coffin. Ben also arrives, telling Jack everyone needs to return - even Locke. ("There's No Place Like Home, Parts 2 & 3")
