Talk:The Man Behind the Curtain/Theories
From Lostpedia
Jacob = Monster Theory
There is a theory being discussed about Jacob possibly being the monster, I like this theory, but it raises a question for me and I'm posting it here as it is a question and not a full theory. If this should be posted along side the theory I can move this, but from the rules on the theory page I'm posting here to be on the safe side.
- In this episode, we learn that the Sonic Barrier was built by dharma and in Left Behind it is stated by Juliet that The Monster doesn't like it ("we don't know what it is but we know it doesn't like our fences." If The Monster is Jacob, Ben knows what it is.).
- Also, now that Ben has carried out The Purge why would they still use the Sonic Barrier? It doesn't seam to actually kill people, just gives an them awful headache (i.e. - Mikhail), and if Ben is friendly with Jacob and Jacob is the Monster why would he want to keep him out?
- One thing I am not sure about is if the Sonic Barrier has been altered from young Ben's time to current. When Ben was a boy, he deactivated the fence by turning a knob, Juliet on the other hand had to enter a code "1623".

- Ben also entered a code, then opened the panel after successfully entering the code and then turned a knob. --Rezen 00:30, 10 May 2007 (PDT)
- I'm sticking with my "monsters from the Id" theory. If you've seen the old sci-fi film "Forbidden Planet" you'll know what I'm talking about. Smokey may be a manifestation of the "magic box" in response to Jacob's will, possibly subconciously. Ben has said that the magic box was a metaphor, but it still seems apparent that something on the island is creating physical manifestations from the thoughts of those on the island. --fatcatfan 09:57, 10 May 2007 (PDT)
Non-theories moved from Theories page
- Is it possible the man young Ben met in the jungle was not Richard, but Richard's father (as yet unmentioned, but certainly possible)?
- It would be a little ridiculous to cast the EXACT same actor as Richard's father.
- Several movies use that. Can be used to confuse people.
- But Lost writers seem to have much more sophisticated ways to confuse the audience, don't you think?

- What if the Hostiles are experiencing time backwards? Before it was deleted, the discussion page for "Through the Looking Glass" had an excerpt from the Lewis Carroll book, with Alice having a discussion about experiencing time backwards -- first the king serves jail time, then he's put on trial, then he commits the crime. Is it possible that time will only go so far on the island (re: Valenzetti Equation), and then it will start to go backwards, but along the same timeline as the people still going forward?
- How is this not a theory? --Amberjet11 09:06, 11 May 2007 (PDT)
- I think it may have been removed because it was posed as a question: see the Lostpedia theory policy. --Cmpieper 11:28, 11 May 2007 (PDT)
- Richard wears what seems to be pirate clothing.
- Actually, Richard seems to be wearing clothing that is very similar to what the Others are wearing when they abduct Walt from the raft and at the camp where Michael sees Walt. It's also similar to clothing we've seen Tom/Mr. Friendly wear in the jungle, especially in confrontations with Jack, Sawyer, Kate, et. al.
- Perhaps some kind of link with the Black Rock? The natives may have come to the island on the ship, rather than having always been there.
- And how did they learn modern english???
- American English, at that..
- And how did they learn modern english???
- Doesn't Danielle Rousseau have the same clothes?
- Mikhail mentioned in Enter 77 that the Purge was about 10 years before, and if this were the case then Ben should look older now than he was, and yet he does not, thus again supporting the theory that no one on the island ages.
- The show did make an effort to make Ben appear younger during the Purge. Did you notice his advanced hairline?
- If no one on the island ages, how the hell do the children grow up? Moreover... how does Ben's father age? There's a GAPING flaw in this theory.
- If the purge was 10 years ago, how come Rousseau never ran into the DHARMA initiative people?
- Because Rousseau is a liar.
- Maybe she was a DHARMA scientist who just went crazy after the constant attacks.
- The show did make an effort to make Ben appear younger during the Purge. Did you notice his advanced hairline?
MERGE ON!
- I say Merge it! Theories ought to be about persons, places or things. Having theories about entire episode's contents only serves to condense data together, but I think proper citation in the respective articles serves the same purpose of identifying the episode. As it is, I think we just have a lot of data duplicated between character/place/object theories and episode theories.Wikistoriographer 09:04, 14 February 2008 (PST)
- If you merge Theories from this episode, you need to be prepared to merge theories from every episode/Theories page. Eventually, all the theory pages should be empty, anyway. I think you're walking into a swamp....--Jim in Georgia Talk Contribs 09:23, 6 June 2008 (PDT)
