I wonder if this is important. The Brothers Karamazov contains a scene in which Christ returns to Earth, briefly and not as the Second Coming, during the Inquisition. You can read the scene here: Grand Inquisitor

It ends up being a strong argument against free will, the Grand Inquisitor sees free will as the source of evil and unhappiness. He comes to oppose Christ because He was in favor of free will.

I think there must be a reason why this book is so important in Lost, and I think this passage might be it. I think the Others may have the same ideas about free will as the Grand Inquisitor.
