Discussion about unidentified songs

Missing Song from I Do

  • "I Do" (s03e06) - Song (muzak style) playing in the background when Kate is shopping in the grocery store. (time in episode 0:17:36)

When Kate is shopping in the grocery store ... the song playing in the background is an instrumental (Muzak style) of the Monkees Daydream Believer. I'd add it to the list, but I don't want to mess up the table. Zymurgy 14:30, 3 June 2007 (PDT)

Thanks Zymurgy, go ahead if you want to give it a shot, otherwise one of us will confirm and add it later. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 00:42, 16 June 2007 (PDT)
Added it to the task list. The Monkees "Daydream Believer" are available at allmusic.com as a audio sample. / Dreamingtree72 02:33, 28 September 2007 (PDT)
I noticed that "Cronikeys" added this song to the article. Is it relay confirmed that it is this song? Anyone have an opinion? / Dreamingtree72 14:11, 4 January 2008 (PST)
Yeah, I noticed that too and went and listened to the audio sample you posted and then to the music in the scene. I agree that it is "Daydream Believer". It's hard to make out much of the muzak that's being played as it is set pretty quietly in the mix, but luckily the guitar melody stands out well enough to pick out – the guitar indeed appears to be playing the melody from the verse. -- Graft   talk   contributions  18:28, 5 January 2008 (PST)
Alright then! One more identified! Dreamingtree72 16:13, 7 January 2008 (PST)

Some notes on the unidentified song list

First of all, great job on organizing the task list, Dreamingtree!

  • "The Moth" (s01e07) - Music played when Charlie is visiting his brother in Sidney, probably music produced for lost. (time in episode 0:31:01)
I took a listen to this last night, and it is score. In fact, the melody the guitar plays is a transposed, rhythmically altered variation of one of the main musical motifs used all over in season one (Credit Where Credit is Due). -- Graft   talk   contributions  20:01, 7 October 2007 (PDT)
I'm not that sure that it's that melody (Credit Where Credit is Due), but it's likley that you are right about that it is score. / Dreamingtree72 11:29, 9 October 2007 (PDT)
  • "Fire + Water" (s02e12) - Played on piano by Charlie. (time in episode 0:02:59)
This is a (slightly messed up) version of the untitled song that Charlie and Liam sing together later in the episode. -- Graft   talk   contributions  03:10, 9 October 2007 (PDT)
Yes, I agree... It sounds like the melody of the vocals in the "funny now..." song. / Dreamingtree72 11:29, 9 October 2007 (PDT)
  • "Every Man For Himself" (s03e04) - On tv that Jack are watching. (time in episode 0:02:05)
A friend of mine helped me to identify this one! The song played on TV are An Der Schönen Blauen Donau composed by Johann Strauss, Jr. I have added this one to the list. Thank's Jimmy! / Dreamingtree72 09:12, 23 October 2007 (PDT)
  • "Not In Portland" (s03e07) - Music played in the room where Carl is being brain washed. (time in episode 0:24:23)
Gregg Nations confirmed at The Fuselage that this was composed by Giacchino. [1] -- Graft   talk   contributions  20:10, 7 October 2007 (PDT)
Alright... one less song on the list! ;-) Great job! / Dreamingtree72 02:24, 8 October 2007 (PDT)
  • "The Man From Tallahassee" (s03e13) - On tv when Locke is watching. (time in episode 0:05:02)
Locke is watching an episode of Exposé, so the music here is either made specifically for Lost, or stock music culled from a production music library. Either way, not commercial.
  • "Left Behind" (s03e15) - Song in bar with Kate & Cassidy. (time in episode 0:09:08)
I noticed that user "Kivipat" already had posted (moved to archive) an identification on this song... (Gregg Nations has confimed that this is an APM music library (ie. non-commercial) track called "Waltz Without Whispering" see [2]). So I guess that one is of the unidentified list. Only the question is, does it fit in the article on the list? I don't think so... anyone else have any opinion? / Dreamingtree72 16:18, 9 October 2007 (PDT)
I agree, we should probably keep the main list restricted to commercially available songs. Maybe at some point down the road we could have a separate section to make note of which music is "library" music. I suspect that the rap song Hurley listens to in the Hummer in "Numbers" is one of these library songs as well. -- Graft   talk   contributions  18:47, 9 October 2007 (PDT)
  • "Left Behind" (s03e15) - Instrumental music when Saywer is having a barbeque (time in episode 0:35:10)
This is part of the score. It sounds different compared to most score music because they added acoustic guitar and ukulele. It's either the same or very similar to the music in "Everybody Hates Hugo" when Hurley is handing out food.
I noticed that under "Cultural references" at the episode page for Left Behind this music is commented. It has been suggested that this music i very similar to the song "Fisherman's Blues" by "The Waterboys". Do you think this is correct? / Dreamingtree72 15:25, 7 October 2007 (PDT)
I listened to samples of Fisherman's Blues and it is not the same song. I Googled the chord changes to see if there was another section of the song that is closer to the music in the episode, but all the charts I looked at indicated that the same four chords repeat over and over. They are similar in style/feel, but not the same. In the "cultural references" section at Left Behind, it is suggested that the barbecue music is an "instrumental variation" of The Waterboy's song. I wouldn't go that far. Often, film makers/producers will give a composer a temporary/guide track to go off of when writing music for film/tv. It could've been the case that the song was used in this way to inspire Michael Giacchino, but even if that were true, I don't think it would count as a reference or appearance of the song in the show, but rather a piece of trivia about the production. -- Graft   talk   contributions  16:57, 7 October 2007 (PDT)
You might be right on this one, but the beginning of "Fisherman's Blues" have a striking resemblance to the beginning of music played in the episode. / Dreamingtree72 11:29, 9 October 2007 (PDT)
  • "Through The Looking Glass" (s03e22) - Charlie is singing. (time in episode 0:26:30)
The first time Charlie is singing (to cover the fact that he was talking to Desmond) he is singing You All Everybody. (he starts out with the "acting like you're stupid people" part before going into the "you all everybody" part.) -- Graft   talk   contributions  17:42, 6 October 2007 (PDT)

Discussion about already identified songs

Coconut by Harry Nilsson

I think that the song "Coconut" by "Harry Nilsson" (2x13 - "The Long Con") would fit better in the new section ("Songs and musicians only mentioned by name") that we discussed (see under "discussion about article layout"). My opinion is that Hurley only "refers to", not sings, this song. What do you think? /Dreamingtree72 16:13, 6 October 2007 (PDT)

I noticed that this song already was moved to the "mentioned" list already. / Dreamingtree72 20:13, 22 January 2008 (PDT)

Scentless Apprentice

I removed the note note that said "Jack listened to Nirvana on April 5, 2007: The thirteenth anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death". The newspaper clipping was from April 5th, which Jack found on the airplane. Later, he almost jumps off a bridge, which takes place at night. Then, the scene of him driving to the funeral parlor is a day scene. It couldn't have been the same day that the newspaper was printed. -- Graft   talk   contributions  01:06, 8 October 2007 (PDT)

Colonel Bogey March

I removed the note note that said "This song is most famously known from the feature film, Bridge on the River Kwai". I think this information to much information i the list and would fit better in the article about the song. / Dreamingtree72 01:21, 19 October 2007 (PDT)

Discussion about article layout

Music Task List

Great work maintaining the music task list Dreamingtree72. Pretty soon we might add a blog/news/forum post to draw attention to it. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 15:30, 21 September 2007 (PDT)

Thanks! I have only the third season to go through now and I'm pretty sure we will have all unidentified and identified songs on the list then! I have a question though... Is the purpose of the list just to mention songs played or sung by any one? Or shall it also list the songs that are just mentioned by a character? / Dreamingtree72 12:47, 23 September 2007 (PDT)
This far the article has been songs played and sung... anything on the audio track. We have not listed songs mentioned by name, although if you want to make a separate section for ==songs only mentioned by name==, go ahead. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 14:30, 23 September 2007 (PDT)
Well... that might be an idea... But it has to be specific songs then, not just artists. I think it would be best to list all songs played or singed first... then maybe the mentioned ones later. The reason I asked was because song #22 (Coconut by Harry Nilsson) in the list is more like mentioned than singed by Hurly. Or what do you think? Should we move that song to the new list in that case? / Dreamingtree72 15:41, 23 September 2007 (PDT)
I noticed that there are already a section for artists (===Musicians===) mentioned or appearing in episodes of Lost without referring to a specific song. I think this indicates that if a song is mentioned in an episode, but not sung och played, it should be on the list anyway. If not we should rename the section "===Musicians===" to for example "==songs and musicians only mentioned by name==". I would vote for including the songs in the list. ;-) What do you think? / Dreamingtree72 14:41, 24 September 2007 (PDT)
The structure of the page has been mildly bothering me for a while, and we could take this opportunity to make some changes, e.g.:
  1. Renaming "Musicians" subhead as you suggest, above; also if you wish, the section could also be formatted as a table.
  2. Removing the numbering of each row in the table; this numbering adds nothing substantial to the content of the article yet serves to make adding songs a needlessly tedious chore.
  3. Adding a "Comments" row to the table would help as a catchall place to clarify issues that you have previously raised above such as "original recording artist vs. actual singer". However it should not be used for detailed descriptive content which belongs on the individual article for the song.
-- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 23:07, 28 September 2007 (PDT)
That's a great suggestion! I'll look in to it later. And if we remove the numbering I think it would be best if we clarify that the songs are listed in chronological order of first appearance. / Dreamingtree72 14:42, 30 September 2007 (PDT)

Tables

I think having the episode numbers in the tables is unnecessary for a few reasons: 1) It adds unnecessary vertical length to the page and looks more cluttered. It's easier to read the page when the table sections are more compact, like this older version: http://www.lostpedia.com/index.php?title=Music&direction=prev&oldid=326707. 2) It's slightly redundant; the episode names are already there, and the episode numbers appear with a mouse over. 3) Well, it's not the usual convention, is it? -- Graft   talk   contributions  02:20, 16 October 2007 (PDT)

I agree! It's enough with the episode names (and episode numbers with mouse over)... / Dreamingtree72 08:46, 16 October 2007 (PDT)
I made this change now since no one seems to oppose. / Dreamingtree72 01:12, 19 October 2007 (PDT)

Repete

Shouldn't Catch a falling star be taken out of songs mentioned only by name. It's also in the season 2 list for the mobile playing it. --Gluphokquen Gunih 10:05, 23 October 2007 (PDT)

Well... I don't think so! It's both mentioned and played and that's also in differnt episodes. / Dreamingtree72 11:30, 23 October 2007 (PDT)
I understand that but it's under songs ONLY mentioned by name, and the song is more than only mentioned by name. Maybe we just need to take the "only" out? --Gluphokquen Gunih 15:46, 23 October 2007 (PDT)
Yes, I agree we don't need the "only" in the header, as I think it's relevant to have the song in both sections. -- Graft   talk   contributions  18:55, 23 October 2007 (PDT)

Strawberry Fields Forever

How about adding Strawberry Fields Forever to the "Songs and musicians mentioned only by name" section? The lyrics Living is easy with eyes closed are tattooed on Charlie's shoulder. -- Graft   talk   contributions  22:23, 7 October 2007 (PDT)

Not forgetting the Sugarplum Fairy reference --Lewis-Talk-Contribs 05:01, 8 October 2007 (PDT)
Well... Sugarplum Fairy not a song and the song it referrers to is not actually mentioned (if I remember it correctly)... so putting that on the list would be a bit far-fetched... / Dreamingtree72 12:12, 8 October 2007 (PDT)
I added the Beatles Strawberry Fields Forever to the "Songs and musicians mentioned only by name" section. / Dreamingtree72 12:39, 8 October 2007 (PDT)
