There's also a great possibility that some of the songs are created specifically for Lost, and is not a commercial song. If so, it should not be on the list!

Song Jack plays on piano in "Do No Harm"

  • "Do No Harm" (s01e20) - Melody played on the piano by Jack before he and Sarah plays "Heart and soul" together. (time in episode 0:14:12)

I agree, the music Jack plays on the piano is not one of the musical motifs from the score. Sounds like a classical waltz. Although I suppose it could've been written by Giacchino. It's pretty simple, so I made a transcription of it in case it helps anyone to identify it.

Note: This might be for example music composed by "Michael Giacchino". The obvious ones are not listed here, only the ones that are hard to tell apart. Discussion about the music in this list might be found in the "Talk:Music" or "Talk:Music Archive".

We might consider putting these songs (confirmed to be Giacchino soundtrack or noncommercial) into a separate section in the main article, just for completeness' sake. Of course, we could get sucked into putting *every* obvious soundtrack occurrence in, but maybe that's ok. Possible references to songs and musicians

Note: The list below shows possible (not obvious or confirmed) references to musicians in Lost with no reference to a particular song, and commercial songs (non-original) that are not heard, but are possibly (not obvious or confirmed) referred to in the show. The purpose of this list is to prevent deleted songs (that don't belong in the article) to reappear in the article.

  • (s01e22) - "Born to Run" by Bruce Springsteen. - The episode title is a possible reference to the album and song by Bruce Springsteen.
  • (s02e20) - "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel. - Scene in Lost where Hurley wants to woo Libby, is parallel to the scene in film "Say Anything" where the guy holds the boom box over his head to "woo" the girl. In that scene the song "In Your Eyes" is playing.
  • (s01e05), (s01e06), (s02e01), (s02e23), (s03e04) and (s03e22) - "The Internationale" by Billy Bragg. - The episode title and the spoken phrases ("We'll live together or we'll die alone")nis a possible reference to a line from the English-language Billy Bragg revision of this famous socialist, anarchist, communist, and social democratic anthem.
  • (s03e09) - "Stranger in a Strange Land" by Iron Maiden, U2, Barbra Streisand and/or Leon Russell. - The episode title is a possible reference to any of the four songs by various artists: Iron Maiden, U2, Barbra Streisand, and Leon Russell.

"In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel

The song "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel ("Two for the Road", Hurley indirectly references this song when he tells Sayid how he wants to woo Libby.) is listed in the "Songs and musicians mentioned by name" section. I don't think this song should be on the list because it seems a bit far fetched. It this case it would reference to almost any song. At least I think so, or am I missing some connection? Well, it's definitely a direct mention of Peter Gabriel, so that reference should stay. Even though the title "In Your Eyes" wasn't mentioned, it still refers to that song - that is the only possible song to which it refers. I still don't understand why it should be on the list... wasn't it a reference to the movie where there were that soundtrack playing? Then it should be a reference to a movie not to the song. Does not belong in the Music article. It is so minor that neither does it belong in the episode's article. It could be put into Pop_culture_misc._references#Say_Anything_.28Movie.29 briefly, as in: Scene in Lost where Hurley does X is parallel to scene in film where X does Y playing Z song. Deletion of song on the referenced list

The user "Robert K S" thinks the songs "Born to Run (song)", "The Internationale" and "One of Us (song)" shouldn't bee on the list because they are to speculative... I disagree because I don't think the songs need to be confirmed by the creators that they are the source of these "references"... I think it's enough that the reference are there and are possible... what do you think? Please say what you think here and on those articles talk page!! I have thought about this a few days now, and I must say I have changed opinion. There would be a big risk that there will be a lot of speculative articles with unconfirmed information if we start allowing those (and similar) articles. I think it would be a good idea to have those "possible" references listed in the Music/Theories instead (this goes for the Peter Gabriel song discussed above as well). And if there's anything mentioned about those "possible" references in the "episode articles" it would better with a crossref to Music/Theories instead of crossref to Music. If someone doesn't protest wildly ;-) I will move those songs to the Theories page a few days from now. I agree with the move to theories. For example, there are four songs named Stranger in a Strange Land in the referenced songs list, when the episode title, more than likely was inspired by the book (or Biblical verse), not one of four songs. --Gluphokquen Gunih ▲ 23:18, 8 April 2008 (PDT)

IMO Outright speculation doesn't belong in the article, nor do ones derived from over-analysis-- I'm sure I could find more song titles in quotes of dialog using Google, but that would be meaningless. The Theory tab should not be a dumping ground for over-analysis either, theories should be "reasonable". As a litmus test, if the actual reference is pretty much irrelevant for the reader of Lostpedia, then it probably shouldn't be put in there. If TPTB (creators) or other official sources confirm something, then that's fine, (e.g. "Ocean Colour Scene" as inspiration for Driveshaft according to Dominic Monaghan), but if it's a stretch, it will be removed. Things like episode titles are more likely to be musical references than dialog. However there may be 3-way references... Exodus refers to departing the island and the Bible, but it's also related to Bob Marley, whose song "Redemption song" is sung-- so it it a reference to the song Exodus too?-- No, this is over-analysis. Similarly "Stranger in a Strange Land"-- I don't recall a TPTB quote regarding this but it comes down to community judgement, and I doubt SISL passes the common sense test for an obscure song, but does pass for reference to a best-selling book. The Internationale

Discussion about article layout

Adding a "Comments" row

The structure of the page has been mildly bothering me for a while, and we could take this opportunity to make some changes, e.g.:

  1. Adding a "Comments" row to the table would help as a catchall place to clarify issues that you have previously raised above such as "original recording artist vs. actual singer". However it should not be used for detailed descriptive content which belongs on the individual article for the song. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 23:07, 28 September 2007 (PDT)

Quotation marks, italics

So, looking over the Wikipedia manual of style for titles, they use quotation marks for song titles and italics for album titles, analogous to the use of quotation marks for episode titles and italics for television series; the rule being quotes for shorter works (part of a longer work) and italics for longer works. I think it's a good idea to revamp our current usage of quotes and italics for song titles and album titles, as a matter of consistency and accuracy. Same song in different episodes/seasons

So far the standard of the list has been that a song will only be put on the list once even if it is played in several episodes. In the episode column where the song is listed all episodes where the song are played is mentioned. The list is divided into season sections and the problem occurs when a song is played several times in different seasons. This will make it harder to find the song if someone hears the song in a later season and want to find out what song it is. Then they will look for the song in that episode and wont find it because it's listed in the earlier season. For example if some one hears the song "make your own kind of music" in "Flashes Before Your Eyes"(s03e08) and looks for the song in the season 3 list, they wont find it because it's listed under season 2. My suggestion is that we will list the song once again if it's played in several seasons, but only once per season. Anyone else have an opinion about this? "Brothers"

This song is called Saved according to driveshaftband.com and from what iI can gather is in real life performed by Ben Folds. the lyrics are "funny now/ you finally see me standing here / funny now/ i'm crying in the rain / all alone / i try to be invincible / together now / we can Saved"(BrianG 20:24, 15 March 2007 (PDT))

Disk 4, Season 2 DVD

Episode Titles

Alot of the songs mentioned only by name say that the episode title came from this song. But I don't think the titles came from the songs as much as the song title and episode title came from a similar place. SiaSL is a sciencefiction novel, and before that a phrase used in the book of Exodus. Is there a better way to word these like, song shares name with episode? Dirt Spigot

Enhanced captions
