There's also a great possibility that some of the songs are created specifically for Lost, and is not a commercial song. If so, it should not be on the list!

Done! / Dreamingtree72 13:28, 14 April 2008 (PDT)
  • Add audio samples of the songs to the list. Perhaps using wikimedia.
I have now carefully viewed through all episodes of Lost, and I think I have listed all music that are not yet identified. You will find them in the list above. / Dreamingtree72 15:48, 6 October 2007 (PDT)

Discussion about unidentified songs

3x08

  • "Flashes Before Your Eyes" (s03e08) - Hurley, Charlie and Desmond singing on the beach (“the farmer's daughter song”?). (time in episode 0:08:40)

Anyone know who wrote the farmer's daughter song Charlie, Hurley and Des were singing? If so, please add. --PandoraX 21:22, 14 February 2007 (PST)

Added it to the "article task list" above. / Dreamingtree72 15:06, 28 September 2007 (PDT)

Song Jack plays on piano in "Do No Harm"

  • "Do No Harm" (s01e20) - Melody played on the piano by Jack before he and Sarah plays "Heart and soul" together. (time in episode 0:14:12)

Apparently used in several scenes (caves discovery, jack playing piano as Sarah walks in before wedding). see Lost-TV forums. Confirm, then let's add to article.-- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 04:07, 8 February 2007 (PST)

Could be a Giacchino composition though -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 20:41, 13 February 2007 (PST)
I've listened to it a couple of times now and I don't think it's the same melody. Anyone have any clue? /Dreamingtree72 12:40, 14 September 2007 (PDT)
I agree, the music Jack plays on the piano is not one of the musical motifs from the score. Sounds like a classical waltz. Although I suppose it could've been written by Giacchino. It's pretty simple, so I made a transcription of it in case it helps anyone to identify it.

Confirmed to be Giacchino in Lost in a Day. --Gluphokquen Gunih 11:42, 7 February 2008 (PST)
That was for the scene with Kate at the barracks in "The Man from Tallahassee". This one is for the scene with Sarah before their wedding in "Do No Harm". The other time Jack has played piano in the show. ;) -- Graft   talk   contributions  22:52, 7 February 2008 (PST)

Sayid and Elsa in bed, The Economist

  • "The Economist" (s04e03) - Song played in the background when Sayid and Elsa are lying in bed together. (time in episode 0:30:48)

Identified as Bonobo (feat. Fink) - "If you stayed over" —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Liquidz (talkcontribs) .

Good job! I had problem hearing the lyrics on that one, witch made it hard to identify! /Dreamingtree72 01:14, 17 February 2008 (PST)

Discussion about already identified songs

List of music in lost confirmed to be non commercial songs

Note: This might be for example music composed by "Michael Giacchino". The obvious ones are not listed here, only the ones that are hard to tell apart. Discussion about the music in this list might be found in the "Talk:Music" or "Talk:Music Archive".

  • (s01s07) "The Moth" - Music played when Charlie is visiting his brother in Sidney. (time in episode 0:31:01) Supposed to be score.
  • (s02e12) "Fire + Water" - Played on piano by Charlie. (time in episode 0:02:59) Supposed to be a "slightly messed up" version of the Driveshaft song "Funny now".
  • (s03e07) "Not In Portland" - Music played in the room where Carl is being brain washed. (time in episode 0:24:23) Confirmed by Gregg Nations [1].
  • (s03e13) "The Man From Tallahassee" - On tv when Locke is watching. (time in episode 0:05:02) Supposed to be score for the tv-series "Exposé" or library music.

  • (s03e22) "Through The Looking Glass" - Charlie is singing. (time in episode 0:26:30) Confirmed to be the Driveshaft song "You all everybody".
  • (s04e07) "Ji Yeon" - On tv when Sun have contractions. (time in episode 0:??:??) Supposed to be score for the tv-series "Exposé" or library music.
We might consider putting these songs (confirmed to be Giacchino soundtrack or noncommercial) into a separate section in the main article, just for completeness' sake. Of course, we could get sucked into putting *every* obvious soundtrack occurrence in, but maybe that's ok. If any subsections ever get too large, all we have to do is spin it off into a separate article. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 16:04, 8 October 2007 (PDT)
My idea of this list was just to prevent that the same music would come up on the unidentified list over and over again... I think it would be enough to have it here on the talk page. / Dreamingtree72 11:32, 9 October 2007 (PDT)

Possible references to songs and musicians

Note: The list below shows possible (not obvious or confirmed) references to musicians in Lost with no reference to a particular song, and commercial songs (non-original) that are not heard, but are possibly (not obvious or confirmed) referred to in the show. The purpose of this list is to prevent deleted songs (that don't belong in the article) to reappear in the article.

  • (s01e22) - "Born to Run" by Bruce Springsteen. - The episode title is a possible reference to the album and song by Bruce Springsteen.
  • (s02e20) - "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel. - Scene in Lost where Hurley wants to woo Libby, is parallel to the scene in film "Say Anything" where the guy holds the boom box over his head to "woo" the girl. In that scene the song "In Your Eyes" is playing.
  • (s01e05), (s01e06), (s02e01), (s02e23), (s03e04) and (s03e22) - "The Internationale" by Billy Bragg. - The episode title and the spoken phrases ("We'll live together or we'll die alone")nis a possible reference to a line from the English-language Billy Bragg revision of this famous socialist, anarchist, communist, and social democratic anthem.
  • (s03e09) - "Stranger in a Strange Land" by Iron Maiden, U2, Barbra Streisand and/or Leon Russell. - The episode title is a possible reference to any of the four songs by various artists: Iron Maiden, U2, Barbra Streisand, and Leon Russell.

I Feel Like Going Home

Is I Feel Like Going Home the version by Muddy Waters, or a cover by Corey Harris? -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 21:56, 14 January 2007 (PST)

Actually there's no way to tell since it's sung by Sawyer on the canoe... I would go for the original artist. / Dreamingtree72 16:01, 23 September 2007 (PDT)
I got it mixed up with "Show Me the Way to Go Home"... / Dreamingtree72 13:28, 26 September 2007 (PDT)
I'm pretty sure that it's the version by Muddy Waters. There are audio samples at allmusic.com. Here are direct links to Muddy Waters version and Corey Harris version. / Dreamingtree72 16:25, 27 September 2007 (PDT)

"In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel

The song "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel ("Two for the Road", Hurley indirectly references this song when he tells Sayid how he wants to woo Libby.) is listed in the "Songs and musicians mentioned by name" section. I don't think this song should be on the list because it seems a bit far fetched. It this case it would reference to almost any song. At least I think so, or am I missing some connection? Anyone else have an opinion about this? /Dreamingtree72 13:31, 1 April 2008 (PDT)

In "Say Anything", when the guy holds the boom box over his head to woo the girl, it's playing "In Your Eyes". It's a stretch, but it's a song used in a scene referenced from a movie. --Gluphokquen Gunih 23:40, 1 April 2008 (PDT)
Well... I think this is a bit to far fetched... that song aren't actually played or mentioned in Lost so I don't think it's a reference. It's a reference to the movie though. I think we should remove it. What do you think? / Dreamingtree72 13:55, 2 April 2008 (PDT)
If no one objects I will remove this song from the "mentioned" list in a few days. So speak up now or hold your breath forever! ;-) / Dreamingtree72 14:01, 4 April 2008 (PDT)
Well, it's definitely a direct mention of Peter Gabriel, so that reference should stay. Even though the title "In Your Eyes" wasn't mentioned, it still refers to that song - that is the only possible song to which it refers. What I think we should do in this case is leave the reference to the song in, but qualify that the title wasn't mentioned. -- Graft   talk   contributions  15:41, 4 April 2008 (PDT)
I still don't understand why it should be on the list... wasn't it a reference to the movie where there were that soundtrack playing? Then it should be a reference to a movie not to the song. If we keep it on the list we can ad dozens of songs that where soundtrack to all movie references. / Dreamingtree72 12:05, 5 April 2008 (PDT)
I think it would be a good idea to have this "possible" reference listed in the Music/Theories instead. Se the discussion below this one... / Dreamingtree72 14:03, 8 April 2008 (PDT)
Just my opinion, but I'd keep the movie reference and lose the music reference for the reasons mentioned. A parenthetical mention of the song after the movie reference is another option. -- LOSTonthisdarnisland 19:01, 9 April 2008 (PDT)
But why should we have movie references in this article about music? If there are movie references they belong in a separate page or in the "cultural references" section in the episode articles. / Dreamingtree72 22:39, 9 April 2008 (PDT)
I meant on LP as a whole, not on this particular article. -- LOSTonthisdarnisland 22:59, 9 April 2008 (PDT)
Ah... ok... I misunderstood... ;-) / Dreamingtree72 01:33, 10 April 2008 (PDT)
Does not belong in the Music article. It is so minor that neither does it belong in the episode's article. It could be put into Pop_culture_misc._references#Say_Anything_.28Movie.29 briefly, as in: Scene in Lost where Hurley does X is parallel to scene in film where X does Y playing Z song. If a user of Lostpedia really wants this information, the terms "Peter Gabriel" on that page will then come up in a site search. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 12:46, 11 April 2008 (PDT)

Deletion of song on the referenced list

The user "Robert K S" thinks the songs "Born to Run (song)", "The Internationale" and "One of Us (song)" shouldn't bee on the list because they are to speculative... I disagree because I don't think the songs need to be confirmed by the creators that they are the source of these "references"... I think it's enough that the reference are there and are possible... what do you think? Please say what you think here and on those articles talk page!! And if those songs to speculative the "In Your Eyes" song are too... ;-) / Dreamingtree72 14:53, 6 April 2008 (PDT)

I have thought about this a few days now, and I must say I have changed opinion. There would be a big risk that there will be a lot of speculative articles with unconfirmed information if we start allowing those (and similar) articles. I think it would be a good idea to have those "possible" references listed in the Music/Theories instead (this goes for the Peter Gabriel song discussed above as well). And if there's anything mentioned about those "possible" references in the "episode articles" it would better with a crossref to Music/Theories instead of crossref to Music. If someone doesn't protest wildly ;-) I will move those songs to the Theories page a few days from now. There's also some others songs and musicians on the list that we should review and maybe move. / Dreamingtree72 14:01, 8 April 2008 (PDT)
I agree with the move to theories. For example, there are four songs named Stranger in a Strange Land in the referenced songs list, when the episode title, more than likely was inspired by the book (or Biblical verse), not one of four songs. --Gluphokquen Gunih 23:18, 8 April 2008 (PDT)
Ok... That's true! I will give it some days before I make this changes so everyone have time to express their opinion. / Dreamingtree72 06:20, 9 April 2008 (PDT)
IMO Outright speculation doesn't belong in the article, nor do ones derived from over-analysis-- I'm sure I could find more song titles in quotes of dialog using Google, but that would be meaningless. The Theory tab should not be a dumping ground for over-analysis either, theories should be "reasonable". As a litmus test, if the actual reference is pretty much irrelevant for the reader of Lostpedia, then it probably shouldn't be put in there. If TPTB (creators) or other official sources confirm something, then that's fine, (e.g. "Ocean Colour Scene" as inspiration for Driveshaft according to Dominic Monaghan), but if it's a stretch, it will be removed. Things like episode titles are more likely to be musical references than dialog. However there may be 3-way references... Exodus refers to departing the island and the Bible, but it's also related to Bob Marley, whose song "Redemption song" is sung-- so it it a reference to the song Exodus too?-- No, this is over-analysis. Similarly "Stranger in a Strange Land"-- I don't recall a TPTB quote regarding this but it comes down to community judgement, and I doubt SISL passes the common sense test for an obscure song, but does pass for reference to a best-selling book. In general, over-speculation will be removed. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 12:43, 11 April 2008 (PDT)

The Internationale

"The Internationale" is a 19th century socialist anthem from which people claim the phrase "Live Together, Die Alone" originates. What do you think, should this be added to the section "Songs and musicians mentioned by name"? -- Graft   talk   contributions  23:43, 29 November 2007 (PST)

Well, I think that one would fit better in the article about that episode under the section "Cultural references". I think we should keep the section "Songs and musicians mentioned by name" in this article strictly to artists and songs that are directly mentioned. / Dreamingtree72 08:25, 23 January 2008 (PST)
Changed my mind... I think that clear references to a songs lyrics should be on the list! / Dreamingtree72 14:22, 4 April 2008 (PDT)
Removed from the list "Referenced songs and musicians"! / Dreamingtree72 13:52, 14 April 2008 (PDT)

"Subterranean Homesick Blues"

  • I think this is purely speculative...no proof that that scene was based off this. --CTS 19:10, 16 April 2008 (PDT)
The user Dagg made this notation to the article; This reference was confirmed in the 11/06/06 podcast. So I guess it's not speculative anymore... ;-) / Dreamingtree72 00:17, 17 April 2008 (PDT)
  • Okay! --CTS 17:03, 17 April 2008 (PDT)

Discussion about article layout

Adding a "Comments" row

The structure of the page has been mildly bothering me for a while, and we could take this opportunity to make some changes, e.g.:

  1. Adding a "Comments" row to the table would help as a catchall place to clarify issues that you have previously raised above such as "original recording artist vs. actual singer". However it should not be used for detailed descriptive content which belongs on the individual article for the song. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 23:07, 28 September 2007 (PDT)
I have added articles for each song now, so this "Comments" row might not be needed anymore... the "context" row might be enough in this article. If you want to know more about the song just click it... / Dreamingtree72 14:04, 4 April 2008 (PDT)

Quotation marks, italics

So, looking over the Wikipedia manual of style for titles, they use quotation marks for song titles and italics for album titles, analogous to the use of quotation marks for episode titles and italics for television series; the rule being quotes for shorter works (part of a longer work) and italics for longer works. I think it's a good idea to revamp our current usage of quotes and italics for song titles and album titles, as a matter of consistency and accuracy. And I'd certainly be up for hunting down and changing relevant instances. -- Graft   talk   contributions  22:51, 30 October 2007 (PDT)

Same song in different episodes/seasons

So far the standard of the list has been that a song will only be put on the list once even if it is played in several episodes. In the episode column where the song is listed all episodes where the song are played is mentioned. The list is divided into season sections and the problem occurs when a song is played several times in different seasons. This will make it harder to find the song if someone hears the song in a later season and want to find out what song it is. Then they will look for the song in that episode and wont find it because it's listed in the earlier season. For example if some one hears the song "make your own kind of music" in "Flashes Before Your Eyes"(s03e08) and looks for the song in the season 3 list, they wont find it because it's listed under season 2. My suggestion is that we will list the song once again if it's played in several seasons, but only once per season. Anyone else have an opinion about this? Maybe a small problem... ;-) /Dreamingtree72 06:47, 30 January 2008 (PST)

I think that's a good idea. -- Graft   talk   contributions  01:11, 31 January 2008 (PST)
Ok... should we keep cross references to episodes in all seasons when the same song appears in two different seasons. I'll make this change in the article. / Dreamingtree72 02:32, 31 January 2008 (PST)
Yes, I think so. That will help aide people who otherwise wouldn't be aware of the multiple references. -- Graft   talk   contributions  02:40, 31 January 2008 (PST)
I have made the changes now in the article now... / Dreamingtree72 05:36, 7 February 2008 (PST)

Renaming "Songs and musicians mentioned by name"

Maybe a better name for this sections would be "Referenced songs and musicians" or "Songs and musicians mentioned". What do you think? Put your vote here for one of the new suggestions or a vote for keeping the current one. / Dreamingtree72 14:35, 3 March 2008 (PST)

Oh, and maybe I should put my vote here to! =) I vote for "Referenced songs and musicians". / Dreamingtree72 14:36, 3 March 2008 (PST)

This song is called Saved according to driveshaftband.com and from what iI can gather is in real life performed by Ben Folds. the lyrics are "funny now/ you finally see me standing here / funny now/ i'm crying in the rain / all alone / i try to be invincible / together now / we can Saved"(BrianG 20:24, 15 March 2007 (PDT))

I only found one reference to support this theory, and it does not cite its sources, seems like fan speculation so far: [3] -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 14:55, 18 March 2007 (PDT)

Disk 4, Season 2 DVD

Does anybody know what the music playing on disk 4 of the Season 2 DVD is when you select the list of episodes? It has no vocals but I really want to know! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Pinknoise (talkcontribs) 19:01, 25 March 2007.

Requiem For A Dream

This is the song played in the promos for episodes 17, 18, 19 and 20. Maybe it should have a section in the article. --Adril-22 13:31, 25 May 2007 (PDT)

Go ahead and create a new subsection for promo music. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 00:43, 16 June 2007 (PDT)
On second thought, probably just add it to the currently existing "PROMOTIONAL" subsection. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 00:44, 16 June 2007 (PDT)
Can anyone confirm that this song is the one used in the promos for those episodes, and if it is then add it to the promotional section? / Dreamingtree72 15:48, 23 September 2007 (PDT)

Episode Titles

Alot of the songs mentioned only by name say that the episode title came from this song. But I don't think the titles came from the songs as much as the song title and episode title came from a similar place. SiaSL is a sciencefiction novel, and before that a phrase used in the book of Exodus. Is there a better way to word these like, song shares name with episode? Or song and episode titles similar? --Gluphokquen Gunih 22:08, 30 January 2008 (PST)

I did a copy edit on that section, and rephrased those parts to say that they share the title. -- Graft   talk   contributions  01:10, 31 January 2008 (PST)
I changed name to the "...mentioned" section to "Referenced songs and musicians", so I think these songs will fit under that section as well... / Dreamingtree72 14:25, 4 April 2008 (PDT)

Dirt Spigot

Does the fictional band Dirt Spigot belong anywhere in this article? A poster for it appeared in "Confirmed Dead", and it was also mentioned by the director character for the You All Every Butties scene. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 12:21, 14 February 2008 (PST)

Yeah I thought about that as well and was thinking about how to incorporate it into the article. It's a pretty minor reference for it's own section... perhaps create a meta-fictional section for Drive Shaft and Dirt Spigot? -- Graft   talk   contributions  12:47, 14 February 2008 (PST)
Yes... that would be a good idea! There might be more of these fictional bands later on in lost as well. / Dreamingtree72 14:21, 14 February 2008 (PST)
Drive Shaft and Dirt Spigot DS hmmmm --Gluphokquen Gunih 20:12, 14 February 2008 (PST)
I could make this change to the article if no one objects. / Dreamingtree72 06:12, 15 February 2008 (PST)
Done! / Dreamingtree72 01:31, 17 February 2008 (PST)

Enhanced captions

Once in a while the captions from the Enhanced episodes have music references, some of which we have and some which we may not yet have. For example see Enhanced_episodes#Selected_captions_4. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 13:42, 29 March 2008 (PDT)

Is that song played or referenced to? Maybe we should have a new section for music in the Enhanced episodes then?! /Dreamingtree72 01:04, 30 March 2008 (PDT)
You might want to check canon first, because it appears some are stating that the captions on the enhanced episodes are not or should not be considered canon. -- LOSTonthisdarnisland 01:13, 9 April 2008 (PDT)
Ok... on Lostpedia:Canon it's stated that information released in Enhanced episodes are Non-Canon. So I guess we shouldn't have this information in the Music article... / Dreamingtree72 06:18, 9 April 2008 (PDT)
The opinion seems to be that it's okay to keep enhanced citations (perhaps prefaced by "non-canon") if the entry is accurate, but not retain the reference based solely on the information in the popups. -- LOSTonthisdarnisland 19:04, 9 April 2008 (PDT)
Ok... but if someone wants to add music references from the enhanced episodes i would prefer a separate section for those songs with a non-canon banner above. / Dreamingtree72 22:41, 9 April 2008 (PDT)
