Major Point To Make

Your definition of heuristics is a rather quotidian one. There are much more suitable definitions that are used within scientific fields. Here are two:

-An educational method in which discoveries result from investigations made by the students.

-In computer science, a problem-solving technique in which the most appropriate solution of several - each discovered through different methods - is selected at successive stages of a program for use in the next phase or step of the program.

Both of these seem much more appropriate than the definition you've given, and are the reason why I have edited this page.

So, heuristics and Occam's razor are opposed? Is that a fair comparison? Jengod 10:49, 13 June 2006 (PDT)

I don't really see it as being opposed to Occam's razor, which is more about parsimony of logic. If anything, it is following principles of parsimony, where complexity of decision making is minimized through use of models... at least, that's how I think of it. :)

Heuristics and Occam's razor really have no relation. Occam's razor is thought process for selecting from a wide range of possible choices the most likely and "best" possible choice. Heuristics are a directed method for finding the solution to a problem by what would appear to be "guided" experimentation. --Etscrivner 15:17, 8 July 2006 (PDT)

I've put a little link to the hidden message showing the full name for DHARMA, but could someone upload it as a thumb for the article please? I've been trying but whenever I do its always in the wrong format etc --Nickb123 02:08, 16 June 2006 (PDT)
