Talk:Gerald DeGroot

DeGroot/Mr. Friendly
Note on the statement about different actors playing DeGroot and "Mr. Friendly. The only time we see DeGroot is in the orientation film which is roughly 25 years old. So it's not at all unlikely they'd get another actor to play the substantially older DeGroot.
Everything is too low quality and brief in the Orientation film to even make any assumption on what Gerald DeGroot looks like, if they're the same guy, might have as well used the same actor as no one could compare them from the footage anyway. The most probable starting reason for the theory was the beard and now even that doesn't fit. That is unless DeGroot's beard in the orientation film was also glued on. --skks 10:09, 12 March 2006 (PST)
The ages may match
"Besides, Tom and DeGroot's ages do not match. If they were the same man, Tom would be much older." I think the ages do match. IIRC, DeGroot is a doctoral candidate, which means he's in his late twenties, or early thirties. The video was produced in 1980, and the plane crashed on 2004. This means that DeGroot is most likely in his fifties. M.C. Gainey is 59, so this seems to make even more sense. Beards make people look older, so it's best to rely on context clues. --AlienChickenPie 11:57, 22 July 2006 (PDT)
Hmm, I may be a little off here. DeGroot was supposedly a doctoral candidate in 1970, when he started the DHARMA Initiative. This adds ten years to his age, and bumps him to his sixties. Well, M.C. is 59, and actors have a scope of ages they can portray, so this still stands.
Removing Speculation
Is there any objection to me removing the highly unlikely speculation that DeGroot is Alvar Hanso or Marvin Candle? --Nshs07 12:45, 11 September 2006 (PDT)
- He is Marvin Candle.
- DEBUNKED: Marvin Candle (a.k.a. Mark Wickmund) is portrayed by actor François Chau, while Gerald DeGrootis portrayed by Michael Gilday who is on the LOST costume and sound staff (he is also featured on the Season 2 bonus disc). Also look at the picture to the right: Dr Marvin Candle introduces himself and narrates the Swan Orientation Film and does not resemble Gerald DeGroot in the same video.
- He is Alvar Hanso.
- In the Sri Lanka video, Alvar Hanso mentions Gerald DeGroot, so it's very unlikely that they are the same person.
- DEBUNKED: Alvar Hanso is portrayed in the Sri Lanka video by Ian Patrick Williams, while Gerald DeGroot is actually Micheal Gilday who is on Sound and Costume background of the LOST staff. Compare the pictures of Alvar Hanso and Gerald DeGroot. DeGroot does not look at all like Hanso in his younger picture. There is another more confusing element however because in regards to when Alvar Hanso was filmmed which would give a better idea of his age. It was said on Sri Lanka video page that 'The Sri Lanka Video was shot by Rachel Blake while in Sri Lanka in mid-July 2006'. However, it was also said on the same page (with images to match this fact) 'There is also a part of the video where the camera is focused on a television playing a Dharma Initiative orientation film from 1975 narrated by Alvar Hanso.' White the DHARMA orientation films that feature Gerald DeGroot are copyright 1980. Does this add up?
Reference?
Could Gerald Degroot be a reference to Gerard Groote, the Dutch founder of the Brother of the Common Life? I don't know how similar their ideas are, but I thought the names might be a coincidence... help me out here, people.
There is a philosoph named Degroot

Move from Supporting Charactors to Different Template
The DeGroots have not only never uttered a single word of dialog, but also have never interacted with any other character in any capacity. It is ridiculous that they'd be listed as a supporting charactor.--Quint88 19:17, 7 March 2008 (PST)Quint88
Jacob
In my opinion he's Jacob, like, he did his plan like Palpatine did in Star Wars, bein the leader of both sides at the war, whatever happens, he would win, and he won. So, for me, Gerald is clarely Jacob. (Vian023 18:30, 9 March 2008 (PDT)) (GMT -3)
Buddha connex
- Would it be valid to state a similarity between the familiar image of Buddha rendering his teaching seated at the base of a tree and the clip we see in the Swan orient. film of Degroot teaching his college students at the base of a tree also? Artemisstrong 23:42, 18 March 2008 (PDT)
Let's Wait
- With the exception of Ben, The members of DHARMA have been relatively insignificant background characters. I think that may be about to change now that Locke, Hurley, and Ben have gone together in search of Jacob. Before the end of this season, we will be better able to judge the significant of all the DHARMAites.--Jim 07:59, 8 May 2008 (PDT)
