  • Delete: Overanalysis! We'll most likely never know the true shape or layout of the island because it's not real. -Chris[dt7] 05:51, 29 October 2006 (PST)
  • Rename/Cleanup: I have a different take on this. This page could be salvaged if a fanon tag were properly added, and the title were changed from Island maps to Blackrock.nl Maps. We have a lot of pages on fansites, and this is a reasonably known fansite. --PandoraX 06:04, 29 October 2006 (PST)
  • thankx Pandora: Thanksa Pandora for supporting my page Feel free to adjust any glitches if you feel like. posted by Redacejr2 29 October 2006 (PST)
  • My support or counterargument on any of these pages would never be personal, and you shouldn't take it as such when an article gets nominated for deletion. It should be based on content, and so there's no need to either thank or flame those individuals; wikis are based on consensus decisions, and that hasn't been made yet. --PandoraX 07:00, 29 October 2006 (PST)
  • This one applies to you moderators: After you read this go in the search box and type 'maps' all you get is blastdoor maps and screen caps of russuoes maps. I got sick of that so i browsed the internet and found this collection of maps created from fans and as PandoraX said it is a rather known fansite. so Moderators why dont you leave this page for the sake of all those fans who would like to get a proper map. • Sry then: than this applies to all those guys with big signitures criticizing the pages —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Redacejr2 (talkcontribs) .
  • Keep/Cleanup We have articles for fan made sites, videos, songs, why not maps. It should be made clear that the maps are made by fans and are just approximations of what the islands look like. -- Paladine<c.t> 07:18, 29 October 2006 (PST)
    • Because this is not an original article written about and commenting a website or work, it is plagiarism of these fans' works, copied and pasted. -- Cheers 07:44, 29 October 2006 (PST)
  • I personally don't think it's plagerism, because he is linking the site now; if anything, it is promotion for the site. This could also be sorted through very easily, as I know the webmaster of that page, and could ask for permission if that's what the only issue is. If there is a second issue, then we should debate that, but if it's just a matter of whether or not we can get him to agree to us using the image with the link and credit to his page, that's something that could be easily resolved (he has also allowed for the image's use elsewhere so long as his link is posted). --PandoraX 13:42, 30 October 2006 (PST)
  • I have a third opinion on this. I recommend Delete, but for a different reason. By his own admission, the creator of the page has been copying creations from other fans on the internet and is pasting them on Lostpedia. I don't believe that's what we want to do. We are quite lax about using material from ABC because we reasonably assume that a big corpo can easily tell us if they want us to remove their material. But fan-created works are a very different matter. When we exceptionally reproduce fan works here, we take care to obtain explicit permission from the author before using them here (for example: the episode transcripts or the survey map). The authors of the maps plagiarized here in this article have given explicit permission to the blackrock website to reproduce their works. Going to take them there and merely mentioning where they've been taken is not sufficient. -- Cheers 07:45, 29 October 2006 (PST) ETA: Following recent changes that now make this article similar to articles about other fansites, I agree with keep. -- Cheers 15:25, 11 November 2006 (PST)
  • This page was exactly what i was looking for! I was hoping to find detailed maps of the island and where certain events took place. Please don't delete it! -Cleo 2 November 2006

Remodel

  • I've redone this page so that it's more of a fan page, and less of a "just take their stuff and post it on lostpedia" page; I think this was the main objection. I also retitled it so that it is clear that the credit is given to blackrock.nl. You guys are still welcome to vote on keeping it or not, but I think it fits the format for a fan page now; if people want to look at the maps in detail, they are now encouraged to go to the original artist's site. --PandoraX 05:11, 7 November 2006 (PST)
Excellent move. This is consistent with what Lostpedia does about other fansites. -- Cheers 15:40, 10 November 2006 (PST)

What about the other two pictures????Redacejr2 03:39, 8 November 2006 (PST)

  • The other two pictures do not violate our policy, see above, as they reference the site they came from, I know the creator and have communicated with him. His name is yung23 on Lost-TV, and he is ok with their use as thumbs here as long as his site is referenced. Here, they illustrate examples of his work, with a link at the bottom for further info and detailed maps if readers are interested. This is different than taking a full map and posting it as Jonah himself initially offered, which is what you did when you created this page, which is why people DID have a problem with it to begin with (especially since you didn't give ANY reference to the original creator and posted his work without his permission to begin with). --PandoraX 15:16, 10 November 2006 (PST)

Creator's Reasoning

Anyway to get in contact with this "yung23" and get a description on why he believes that this is how the island is layed out?   Hooper   talk    contribs    email   13:33, 22 March 2007 (PDT)

You can first have a quick look at his threads on Lost-tv forum and try to follow the evolution of his reasoning: [1] and [2]. If you want to contact him, you can create an account there and send him a message. -- Cheers (talk) 15:20, 22 March 2007 (PDT)

links and speculation that fan maps so far are upside down

Just thought I'd add my two cents - that a lot of people probably come here looking for a good list of fan maps. If there's any notable ones not here that we don't have permission to copy, we should at least include them as a text only link. Also wanted to point out that a lot of these are pretty old and clearly completely wrong lol. I mean, these all have the golf course in the crater next to a bay where the losties are - when clearly the crater is on the complete opposite side of the island and is where the Others and the barracks is, and the bay is where the tailies landed. Any newer maps that aren't upside down? --Jackdavinci 19:48, 22 March 2007 (PDT)

Jonah Adkins Model

I don't know what the rest of the world thinks but as far as I can tell, the pearl and the beach craft are in opposite spots. Also another discrepancy is that the compass is off. Last little issue is that I think the Black Rock should make an appearance, as far as LOST and the lost experience are concerned it is pretty significant. I mean one of the characters explodes there!!!! No, but seriously, really freaking good job with the map. It is a really great interpretation of the ISLAND. airwaverjoker 22:51, 24 April 2007 (PDT)

Accuracy of maps

Some comments on the older maps:

- The blast door map has been basically been shown to be totally inaccurate. Its impossible to trust any part of it. All of the older maps that use it are really wrong now.

- The two maps from season three that I combined give the relative positions of a great many locations. They also "together" give a compass bearing which along with with the compass bearing from Danielle's map shown when Sayid was on the yacht gives the relative location of Ben's sectional map with regard to the entire island.

- I'm not happy with Ben's map because the locations and distances don't really seem consistant with the story. But there is no basis for questioning the result right now. The barracks seems too far north. And the Flame seems too close to the Pearl. Taking the Pala Ferry to the Barracks also makes little sense given the land route back is far shorter.

There are some other things known about the geography of the Island within the context of the new map:

- The Looking Glass and the Cable have to be to the west of the Beach Camp. There isn't enough info to put it on the map.

- Sayid almost certainly showed the relative position of the Decoy Camp on Rousseau's map. We also know that the Statue and the Pala Ferry have to be on the west side of the island to the south of the Decoy Camp.

- The Dock used at the Barracks has to be on the west side of the Island to the south of the Pala Ferry. It has to be over the hills from the Barracks.

- The Tail Section and the Arrow have to be on the east side of the Island. Its impossible to know north/south where any of the locations are.

- The southern half of the Island seems to have made little or no appearances within the show as of yet. Unless the Hydra was in that area.

- Magnetic compass bearings given in the show seem to be completely wrong versus the maps. Dharmatel4 14:07, 10 November 2007 (PST)

Distances measured from combination of cable map and Ben's Radio Tower map

The Dharma Cabling map has distance information on it. The distance information (the length of a mile) can then be applied to Ben's Radio Tower map by looking at the size of the Barracks on the map.

I came up with the following distances afterward:

Beach Camp -> Pearl 4 miles

Beach Camp -> Flame 5.5 miles

Beach Camp -> Barracks 5.25 miles

Beach Camp -> Pascal Flats 7.5 miles

Beach Camp -> Radio Tower 7.5 miles

Pearl -> Pascal Flats 3.8 miles

Pearl -> Barracks 1.13 Miles

Pearl -> Flame 2 Miles

Pearl -> Radio Tower 4.75 Miles

Pascal Flats -> Barracks 2.5 Miles

Pascal Flats -> Flame 3.1 miles

Pascal Flats -> Radio Tower 5 miles

Flame -> Radio Tower 2.75 miles
