Talk:Apollo Bar

From Lostpedia

I really thought that in Ep.1 Season 1, Boone offered Shannon an Apollo Bar to eat while they were sitting on the beach. Shannon told Boone that she did not want to eat it because they were going to be rescued soon. I need to go back and watch S1 again...Just a thought though!

He did offer her a candy bar...

...but it wasn't an Apollo Bar from what I can tell --Circeus 17:48, 28 December 2005 (PST)

Does someone have a good screenshot?

Does someone have a good screenshot? --aurora glacialis 13:26, 5 March 2006 (PST)

Checked it out, the shot's not close to good and not much can be made out of it. The wrapper does look similar.
--skks 16:28, 14 March 2006 (PST)

It really looks a lot similar, but cant be sure. maybe the whole Apollo Bar thing was just produced for the show because they didn't want to use a "Mars" bar or anything else that really exists. May have marketing reasons... --aurora glacialis 00:01, 15 March 2006 (PST)

Yeah, the colours are definatly the same. It probably wasn't meant to be seen though. --LostCat 11:51, 8 May 2006 (PDT)

Another Qwerk

Could the Apollo bar be used to indicate the age of the stores. You would imagine it would have been produced in reaction to the Apollo moon programme and discontinued once it went out of fashion.

I'm thinking it's not important in itself but its another contradiction, a qwerk, alongside the old fashioned music and facilities and new items like the washer and dryer.

You get a pretty good look at the front of one when Kate first picks on up in Adrift around 27 minutes into the episode. Its "Full O' Nuts"" apparently.

Obscure

Among the facts:

  • Nobody from Oceanic Flight 815 has ever heard of them.

What does it refer to? --Ggonnell 06:06, 27 April 2006 (PDT)

What does what refer to? Do you mean, where was this mentioned in the show? I do remember someone (probably Hurley) saying he'd never heard of them, but I don't think it's ever been clearly stated that NOBODY has ever heard of them? --Bremerton 06:10, 27 April 2006 (PDT)
I know i'm a little late, but i'm almost positive that Rose has heard of them...--NotARedHerring 15:12, 24 October 2006 (PDT)

"HURLEY: Apollo bars? Ever hear of these? ROSE: Huh-uh, but candy is candy -- that's what Bernard always says." Sounds like a no to me. So neither of them has heard of it - the show never says that nobody has heard of them, but it's probably a safe assumption that the show intends this is some wacked obscure candy bar. What I want to know is, why is it that instead of a generic DHARMA bar like everything else? --Minderbinder 15:19, 24 October 2006 (PDT)

In truth? Because it would've been awkward to give out "Dharma Bars", what with Dharma supposedly being defunct. That's what i'm sayin', anyway. (Guess I was wrong about Rose, though ^^;;;)--NotARedHerring 09:42, 27 October 2006 (PDT)

Advertisement mentioned under Website

Can anyone provide a scan of the Apollo Bar advertisement mentioned in the article under the Website section? --Fezir 17:27, 4 August 2006 (PDT)

So who physically ended up getting the APollo bar??

Kudos to them! I heard they were impossible to get and that they were given out to the wrong people...

--PandoraX 18:37, 23 August 2006 (PDT)

Who are "the wrong people" ? Cheers 19:03, 23 August 2006 (PDT)
Those who are not us. --†††GodEmperorOfHell††† 19:19, 23 August 2006 (PDT)
Bad people? --Jajasoon 19:40, 23 August 2006 (PDT)
Yup, what GEOH said... the "Others"... LOL. But seriously though, supposedly they screwed up this giveaway (I was talking to my cousin on the phone as it happened)... they thought the candy was "donated by ABC" and not part of any promotion, so they put them in gift bags for fantasy football people. Supposedly, most of them had no clue what TLE was about. Sorry if this makes no grammatical sense, I'm somewhat drunk writing it. --PandoraX 20:47, 23 August 2006 (PDT)
whilst maintaining NPOV... for fucks sake. surely someone from AT LEAST 4815162342 or dharmasecrets got one? --kaini. 20:50, 23 August 2006 (PDT)
Nope, nothing dude! I scoured all the forums & blogs I frequent (lost-tv, numbers, TLEC, ITE, TTS, TBR, etc...)... NOTHIN. Apparently, everyone is directing over *here* (lostpedia) for the exclusive pics. OK, I'm going to sleep/pass out now... nite! --PandoraX 20:57, 23 August 2006 (PDT)
let's give it a day or two; something has to surface. i have a feeling there might be a glyph or a message from rachel in a few bars, willy wonka stylee - i'm a man of faith... --kaini. 21:04, 23 August 2006 (PDT)
also; anyone who signs a talk page has their template show up at the end upon another edit. that needs fixing? --kaini. 20:51, 23 August 2006 (PDT)
Kaini, see your talk page on that. In regards to the bars, I can't any over in the UK due to location, but a familiar face who will remain nameless has said they'll send me one if they get ahold of any ;-) --Nickb123 (Talk) 03:41, 24 August 2006 (PDT)
Just an update on this, I did end up picking a few, I have two bars left, but one is promised to a charity auction which is still happening later. Wish you were in the US, I would try to get you an extra! --PandoraX 07:44, 11 November 2006 (PST)

Did anyone eat one? What do they taste like? Which candy company actually manufactured them? Robert K S 10:22, 23 February 2008 (PST)

Apollo is a real company

Joined so i can tell you guys this: Apollo Food Holdings Bhd is a real company that produces candy bars in Malaysia. Though they look like nothing in Lost, there are real Apollo candy bars. I've personally eaten at least one in my childhood, and when the producers pulled it out in Lost I had a laugh. I personally can't find their website, but here's a link from some Malaysian business [website]http://www.mida.gov.my/beta/view.php?cat=41&scat=1332 (note ".gov") Just surprised that no one has any idea. Oh, and they are chocolate covered wafer biscuits without any nuts. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Apollobars (talkcontribs) .

  • That's very interesting, Apollobars, thanks for sharing. I'm going to put your info into the main page of Apollo Candy Company under "Trivia" (not this page, which is mostly on just the candy bar), since it's a little tidbit of knowledge people might find to be pretty neat. --PandoraX 07:41, 11 November 2006 (PST)
This post on the fuselage might be of interest to you. --   Jabberwock    talk    contribs    email   - 09:18, 11 November 2006 (PST)
  • I'm still not convinced the Malaysian entity is related. Was the label art similar, or only the name? Trademarks don't necessarily hold internationally. At any rate, here is one URL with information on the Malaysian company. I'd be curious to hear more from Gregg. I'd also be curious to know if there was any backlash from automobile logos that are visible, since we had Rose's Chevrolet with a rear end logo covered by an HUGE swath of duct tape. Also it would be illuminating to know ABC's role in policing Touchstone with regard to these legal issues.-- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 13:21, 17 December 2006 (PST)

  • An image of a golden oracle bar would be nice to have in the article -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 13:06, 17 December 2006 (PST)

Apollo

Proof of time being screwed up on the island?

The producers said in a podcast that we had to pay attention to when Juliet's flashback was happening. Juliet said she had been on the islnad for 3 years right? This means that she arrived in 2001? Then how come the bus hitting her husband which seemed to happen not very long before her arrival have an Apollo logo? Apollo became bankrupt in the 70s. Interessting? --Princess Dharma (banned) 05:30, 8 February 2007 (PST)

"Apollo Bar" sounds like "A Polar Bear"?

Could/Should we mention this fact under something?--Gakhandal 20:58, 7 March 2007 (PST)

"You can have as many as you want"

I was going to put this under "Unanswered questions," but maybe the answer would be obvious to me if I'd followed "The Lost Experience" (which I haven't): The girl gives Ben an Apollo candy bar, and then says a strange thing: "You can have as many as you want." What's that about? Zicsoft 09:19, 10 May 2007 (PDT)

Take a look at the theories, I added something that might answer this. --Apollo Candy 21:50, 26 June 2007 (PDT)

Probably the simple fact Apollo is a private purveyor to the Hanso Foundation and its subsidiaries. --Nickb123 (Talk) 15:00, 7 August 2007 (PDT)

Rename

  • Rename: To Apollo Candy bar. Its the Apollo Candy Company, so thus I would think the bar part shouldn't be capitalized. I may be wrong, I'm never good with this stuff, I usually just capitalize everything with a flawed consistency logic. --Nickb123 (Talk) 15:00, 7 August 2007 (PDT)
  • Shouldn't it just be Apollo, Apollo bar, or Apollo candy bar, if the candy's name is "Apollo"? Are there any official references to either "Apollo Candy bar" or "Apollo Candy Bar"? In lieu of such evidence, I'm skeptical of the name "Apollo Candy bar": this isn't short for "Apollo Candy Company bar", it's just "a candy bar called Apollo". -Silence 15:07, 7 August 2007 (PDT)
I could/would go with just Apollo bar, which is what its called numerous times on the old apollocandy.com website (pasted in our Apollo Candy Company article now since the old URL license was lost and its now a porn site). Apollo bar might also actually help further distinguish it from Apollo Candy Company, as right now that and Apollo Candy Bar are very similar, and I had to spend a long while making sure they weren't repetitious and focused on their own areas --Nickb123 (Talk) 15:19, 7 August 2007 (PDT)
P.S. The other good source - the world's trippiest video [1] --Nickb123 (Talk) 15:23, 7 August 2007 (PDT)
So should it now be Apollo Bar or Apollo bar is the question. --Nickb123 (Talk) 04:47, 8 August 2007 (PDT)
  • My first inkling was definitely toward "Apollo bar" (instead of "Apollo Bar"), as that would make more sense with capitalization. However the website did indeed use the caps version in the transcript you provided in Apollo Candy Company (I can't check the website because now it's some adult portal). Therefore this isn't just a case of the website using title caps. You could either say: 1) that makes "Bar" official, or 2) the website capitalized incorrectly. I don't think it's a big deal either way, you could justify either capitaliztion, and it doesn't affect the reader's access to Lostpedia content since the confusion with Apollo Candy Company is now cleared up. At some point, I think you just have to make a call, and since the TLE stuff is mostly your department, my opinion is just go ahead and do it either way. If we get onto capitalization, then we should also go back to all the small role articles, and make the intro line, article title, and infobox title consistent for each article. ABCmedianet press releases tend to capitalize the roles I think, but I'd have to double check. -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 12:30, 8 August 2007 (PDT)
  • I believe that the logical thing to do would to be to rename to Apollo bar, with correct capitalization. The "candy" operator is unnecessary. --Marik7772003 15:41, 8 August 2007 (PDT)
Yeah I'm leaning toward bar as well right now. I'm expecting Issue 6 of the Lost magazine, the full page ad for Apollo might help with this discussion (who knows), but I think its better to just see it as Apollo as the brand, but the inclusion of bar. The website's reference to it as "The Apollo Bar" continually I don't think is enough to warrant capitalization of bar (my god how trivial is this!) --Nickb123 (Talk) 15:45, 8 August 2007 (PDT)
Actually I take it back, I'm going with Bar - as in "Mars Bar" which capitalizes it all. I think its part of the brand name --Nickb123 (Talk) 16:03, 8 August 2007 (PDT)
  • The correct option would be Apollo Bar as it is a product name, like Kellog's Corn Flakes, Mars Bars, Rice Krispies, Sunny Delight, Mountain Dew.  Plkrtn  talk  contribs  email  16:05, 8 August 2007 (PDT)
  • Well that's the thing, is the trade mark "Kellog's Corn FlakesTM" cereal or "Kellog's Corn Flakes CerealTM", or "Snickers BarTM" or "SnickersTM" bar? "Jello Brand GelatinTM" or "JelloTM brand gelatin"? At any rate we have the website transcript as a rationale, and that's strong enough for me, so I support the move (as has been done already) to "Apollo Bar". -- C¯ _Santa_ ¯T 18:58, 8 August 2007 (PDT)
  • Mars Bars are trademarked as "Mars®" on the packaging. -Silence 19:13, 8 August 2007 (PDT)
Yes and their product is "The Mars Bar", not "Mars". And in this case the trademark is "Apollo Candy Company", and their product is "The Apollo Bar" (as stated on their website), we can ditch the determiner for an article on the subject, leaving us with "Apollo Bar" --Nickb123 (Talk) 02:32, 9 August 2007 (PDT)
