- Due to the electromagnetic anomalies found on the island, compasses will always lead back to the island itself. A heading of 325 one way or another counteracts this—or at least compensates for the magnetic interference the compass will undergo.
- It is possible through the use of very powerful magnetic fields to 'bend light' around an object rendering it invisible. This would explain why the island cannot be seen by people outside of the island. The magnetism would mess with their compasses, leading them around it.
- However, Desmond would have been able to use the sun and stars as navigational aids, and, as an experienced sailor, would have noticed if his due west heading did not point towards sunset. Also, compasses point towards magnetic north, which would have caused him to circle the island if its magnetic influence confused the compass. Also, a boat the size of the Elizabeth, fitted for a "race around the world", would have a GPS unit which would not be susceptible to magnetic interference.
- Also, there has to be a way for light to hit the island, otherwise it would be literally invisible to everyone, no matter if they're on it or not.
