Many of the characters have secrets
Many of the characters have secrets
The characters on Lost have many secrets they keep from each other. In addition to the many unshared details of their respective backstories, new information is often slow to spread among characters because it is initially restricted to a small group. This fact is often referenced in the show itself, as characters complain about not belonging to the "in" group at various times. Some secrets listed below were eventually revealed over the course of Lost, while others have yet to be widely known. This page serves to keep track of all noteworthy unshared (or formerly unshared) character details, in order to keep tabs on who knows what.

Charlie was a recovering heroin addict

Charlie was a recovering heroin addict
Summary: Charlie became addicted to heroin through the influence of his brother Liam. When his stash began to dwindle after a week on the Island, he came clean with the help of Locke, though he had several near-relapses. ("Pilot, Part 2")  ("The Moth")

  • Locke revealed he knew of Charlie's addiction. ("House of the Rising Sun")

How Locke viewed "the Monster"
Summary: Like Eko, Locke supposedly had contact with "the Monster". What he saw has never been precisely shown. ("Walkabout")
Who knows: Locke; Jack to an extent; Eko prior to his death.
  • Locke told Jack that he looked into the eye of the island and "what I saw was beautiful". ("Walkabout")
  • Locke told Eko that he saw a white light, shortly before Eko's death. ("The Cost of Living")

Locke was once disabled
Summary: Locke was in a wheelchair for four years before the crash. After the crash, he could walk. ("Pilot, Part 1")  ("Walkabout")
Who knows: Locke, Rose, the Others, Sawyer; Boone, Anthony Cooper prior to their deaths
  • Walt said to Michael, "Mr. Locke said a miracle happened to him." How much Locke elaborated on this fact to Walt is unknown. ("Tabula Rasa")
  • Locke revealed his secret to Boone just before he Boone was injured exploring the drug smugglers' plane. Boone died before telling anyone Locke's secret. ("Deus Ex Machina")  ("Do No Harm")
  • Locke wheeled up to Rose in the airport to pick up the medication she had dropped. Later, when he told her that it would to take four weeks for him to recover from the blast door crushing his legs, she replied, "You and I both know it's not going take that long." ("S.O.S.")
  • Mikhail told Locke that "the John Locke I used to know was para-", but was interrupted by Rousseau. ("Par Avion")
  • Ben asks Locke about his sudden recovery from paralysis, and further reveals that he knows that Locke was paralyzed by his father knocking him out of a window. ("The Man from Tallahassee")
  • Anthony Cooper caused Locke's paralysis, and knew about it when he appeared on the Island. ("The Man from Tallahassee")  ("The Brig")
  • All of the Others are curious about the supposed miracle of Locke's recovery. ("The Brig")
  • Anthony Cooper tells Sawyer while in the Black Rock. ("The Brig")


Jin's father is alive

Jin's father is alive
Summary: Jin told Sun and Mr. Paik that his father was no longer alive. This was revealed to be a lie, caused by Jin's shame over his background. ("...In Translation")

  • Sun discovers the truth after Jin's biological mother blackmails Sun to keep her profession a secret. Sun finds Jin's father and agrees to keep his secret after talking to him in person. "D.O.C."


Sun knows English

Sun knows English
Summary: In Sun's first days on the Island, no one—not even Jin—knew that she spoke English. However, everyone learned of her secret after a month on the island. Sun learned English from Jae Lee prior to boarding Flight 815, as part of her plan to leave Jin. ("House of the Rising Sun")  ("The Whole Truth")

  • Sun revealed her secret first to Michael, to explain that Jin assaulted him for being in possession of Jin's watch. ("House of the Rising Sun")
  • Kate discovered Sun's secret based on her slight chuckle to Kate's joke while they were gardening. ("Hearts and Minds")
  • All of the survivors, including Jin, finally learned about her ability to speak English when she had to reveal it to defend Jin against accusations that he burned the first raft, since he could not comprehensibly defend himself. ("...In Translation")


Sawyer is a murderer

Summary: Sawyer killed Frank Duckett for revenge (mistaken person). ("Outlaws")
Who knows: Kate, Juliet, Sayid, Locke, the Others
  • Known by Kate that he killed a man (no details given), after a game of "I never". ("Outlaws")
  • Juliet told Sawyer that she knew in front of Sayid. ("One of Us")
  • Locke read the file that the Others had on Sawyer, which included the fact that Sawyer murdered a man. ("The Brig")


Jin was an "enforcer" for Mr. Paik

Jin was an "enforcer" for Mr. Paik
Summary: Jin was hired as an "enforcer" for Sun's father, Mr. Paik. ("...In Translation")

Hurley is a multi-millionaire

Sun poisoned Michael
Summary: Michael gets sick and Jack determined that someone poisoned his water bottle. Although Kate and Sawyer are early suspects, Sun is the one who did it, with the urging of Kate. ("Born to Run")

  • Jack confronted Sun, who confessed she didn't want Jin to leave, and "only used enough to make him sick." Michael inadvertently drank from Jin's water. ("Born to Run")

Summary: Ana Lucia murdered Jason McCormack for revenge, after he shot her and killed her unborn baby. ("Collision")
Who knows: Teresa Cortez, Sayid
  • Her mother, Teresa Cortez, guessed correctly that she murdered Jason. ("Collision")
  • Told story about how she was shot to Sayid, but did not tell ending when he asks what happened to the man. Sayid may have guessed her secret from her demeanor, because he says "What good would it be to kill you, if we're both already dead?" when she handed him the gun and dared him to shoot her. ("Collision")


Eko's dark past

Eko's dark past
Summary: Mr. Eko used to be a feared drug dealer who was known for murders and threats in his homeland of Nigeria. Later disguised himself, and lived as a priest. ("The 23rd Psalm")
Who knows: No one, but probing questions have been asked in response to some of his unorthodox actions.

Charlie attacked Sun

Charlie attacked Sun
Summary: As part of Sawyer's plan, Charlie attacked Sun, making it look like the Others were becoming more aggressive. Charlie participated in the plan to make Locke look like a fool. ("The Long Con")
Who knows: Sawyer, Sun
  • Charlie and Sawyer discussed the plan in the forest after it was accomplished. Sawyer promised never to reveal that Charlie was involved. ("The Long Con")
  • Charlie confesses and apologizes to Sun. Sun tells Sawyer that she won't tell Jin. It is unknown if she or Charlie revealed it to anyone else. ("Exposé")


Jin is infertile

Jin is infertile
Summary: Sun and Jin were tested for infertility. The doctor confided privately to Sun that her husband is infertile. ("The Whole Truth")
Who knows: Everyone
  • After revealing to Jin she is pregnant, Sun also told him about Dr. Je-Guy Kim's revelation. ("The Whole Truth")
  • When Juliet finds out that Sun is pregnant, Sun confesses that she had an affair and that Jin is infertile. Juliet includes this bit of information on the recording she leaves for Ben. ("D.O.C.")
  • Sawyer plays the tape for all of the survivors. ("The Man Behind the Curtain")


Sun had an affair

Sun had an affair
Summary: Sun had an affair with Jae Lee. ("The Whole Truth")
Who knows: Mr. Paik; Juliet and Jin know that Sun had an affair but not with whom.
  • Her father, Mr. Paik, saw them in bed together. ("The Glass Ballerina")
  • Although Mr. Paik asked Jin to kill Jae Lee, Jin is unaware of the affair. ("The Glass Ballerina")
  • Sun tells Juliet upon entering the Staff. ("D.O.C.")
  • Juliet tells Jin about Sun's affair to try to get both of them to stay at the beach. ("Ji Yeon")


Rose was terminally ill

Rose was terminally ill
Summary: Rose has a terminal illness, which she believes to be cured because of the Island. ("S.O.S.")
Who knows: Bernard, Jin
  • Before the crash, Rose told Bernard she was sick, and later after the crash, she told Bernard that the island has healed her. ("S.O.S.")


Kate took a pregnancy test

Kate took a pregnancy test
Summary: Kate once took a pregnancy test. It was negative. ("The Whole Truth")  ("I Do")

Libby already knew Hurley, and was at SRMHI

Libby already knew Hurley and was at SRMHI
Summary: Libby was in Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute with Hurley. ("Dave")
Who knows: No one but Libby, not even Hurley.
  • Hurley says "Do I know you from somewhere?" to Libby, but he can't remember from where. ("Fire + Water")
  • Libby tried to misdirect him, by making up a story about his having stepped on her foot when he came on the plane. However, Hurley was the last person to board the plane, and Libby was already seated in the back section, so this was a lie. ("Dave")


Ana worked with Jack's father

Ana worked with Jack's father
Summary: Ana Lucia worked with Jacks father, Christian Shephard, on a trip to Australia. She did not know Christian was Jack's father. ("Two for the Road")
Who knows: No one, not even Ana Lucia understands the significance of her employer.
  • Christian hired Ana Lucia to accompany him on a trip to Australia.("Two for the Road")
  • Ana Lucia and Jack never drew their connection before Ana Lucia's death. It is possible that Ana Lucia did know, since she asked if his father was a drinker, but she chose not to tell Jack.


Libby gave Desmond the sailboat

Libby gave Desmond the sailboat
Summary: Libby met Desmond off the Island, and gave him the Elizabeth. ("Live Together, Die Alone")
Who knows: No one, except for Desmond.
  • Desmond does not know the significance of Libby, as he disappeared before she arrived, and appeared right after her funeral.


Michael's betrayal

Michael's betrayal
Summary: Michael shot Ana Lucia and Libby to free Ben. He was coerced by the Others to free Ben and also to betray his friends by luring Kate, Jack, Sawyer and Hurley to the Others camp. ("Live Together, Die Alone")
Who knows: Everyone
  • Sayid worked out Michael's plan and informed Jack. He then sailed around the island in an attempt to help. ("Three Minutes"), ("The Glass Ballerina")
  • After confronted by Jack, Michael admitted his guilt to the group. ("Live Together, Die Alone")
  • Ben tells Juliet that Michael can be manipulated in a way that will help them capture Jack, unaware that Paulo is eavesdropping. ("Exposé")
  • Michael apparently told Walt while escaping the island because he "had to tell someone". This caused Walt to become afraid of Michael, and start living with his grandmother in Manhattan. ("Meet Kevin Johnson")

Season 3

Jin was ordered to kill Jae Lee

Jin was ordered to kill Jae Lee
Summary: Mr. Paik ordered Jin to kill Jae Lee. ("The Glass Ballerina")
Who knows: Mr. Paik
  • Jin, instead of killing Jae Lee, gave him the option to run away and never be seen again. Jae Lee committed suicide. ("The Glass Ballerina")


Sawyer is a father

Summary: Sawyer believes he has a daughter. ("Every Man for Himself")

Sun shot and killed Colleen

Sun shot and killed Colleen
Summary: On the Elizabeth, Sun shot Colleen, who later died. ("The Glass Ballerina")

Summary: Juliet asked Jack to kill Ben during the tumor removal operation through a video tape. ("The Cost of Living")

Summary: Ben and the Others kidnapped Alex from Rousseau. Ben told Alex that her mother had died, so she never knew. ("The Man Behind the Curtain")

  • All the survivors knew this from Rousseau
  • Due to Pryce, it also seems that at least the majority of Others knew of this.
  • Alex finally found out when Ben was captured in front of Rousseau, with Rousseau just blankly staring at her. Ben finally told her the truth. ("Through the Looking Glass")


Christian Shephard is Claire's father

Christian Shephard is Claire's father
Summary: Christian had an affair with Carole Littleton, who gives birth to Claire nine months later. Therefore, Claire and Jack are half-brother/sister. ("Par Avion")
Who knows: Christian, Carole Littleton, Jack
  • Claire hasn't made the connection that Jack is her brother yet, since Christian never told her the name of his son. In addition, Christian never told Claire his own name. ("Par Avion")


Naomi was found

Naomi was found in the jungle
Summary: Naomi the parachutist crash landed on the island, and was found by Desmond, Charlie, Hurley and Jin. She was treated by Mikhail and brough back to camp, but they didn't tell Jack because they don't trust him anymore. ("Catch-22") ("D.O.C.") ("The Brig")

Sawyer killed Cooper

Sawyer killed Cooper
Summary: After being led to the Black Rock by Locke in order to kill Ben Sawyer discovers Anthony Cooper and in a fit of rage strangles him to death which Locke thanks him for.("The Brig")
Who knows: Locke, Richard Alpert


Ben was not born on the island

Ben was not born on the island
Summary: Ben claims to everyone that he was born on the island ("The Man Behind the Curtain")
Who knows: Richard Alpert, John Locke
  • Richard met him as a child when he was still a member of DHARMA. He also helps Ben destroy them.
  • Ben tells Locke that he is right that he is a compulsive liar, and starts off by telling him that he was a member of DHARMA and killed them all. Once he tells him this though, he shoots Locke, and Ben assumes he left him to die in the pit.


Naomi is not with Penny

Naomi is not a member of Penny's search party
Summary: Naomi claims to have been searching for Desmond and to have been hired by Penny Widmore, when she is actually not.("Catch-22"), ("The Brig"), ("Through the Looking Glass"), ("The Beginning of the End")
Who knows: Everyone on the island as well as Penny.
  • Charlie comes into contact with Penny in the Looking Glass and finds out that she is not a member of her search party. He manages to tell Desmond this before he drowns.
  • Ben tells Jack that Naomi is not who she says she is and is one of the "bad guys". He tells Jack if he contacts her boat, they will all die because of her.
  • Locke kills her without any explanation or compromising anything with her, which implies he somehow knew that she was bad for the island. Locke may have killed her because of his obsession with staying on the island, (the reason he blew up the submarine). He may believe, just as many of the survivors do, that the boat that is there and can take them away from the island.
  • When Desmond arrives back from the Looking Glass, he passes on the message to everyone at the beach and they radio Jack with the news.


Season 4

The Oceanic 6 are lying

The Oceanic 6 are lying
Summary: The Oceanic 6 are lying to the rest of the world about the crash, the number of survivors, the Island, and probably more. ("Through the Looking Glass"), ("The Beginning of the End")
Who knows: Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, Sun, and Ben
  • All the members of the Oceanic 6 are hiding it.
  • Matthew Abaddon strongly suspects they are lying and there are people still alive.
  • Ben is off the Island and presumably also knows.


Hurley saw Jacob's cabin

Hurley saw Jacob's cabin
Summary: Hurley indicates to Locke that the cabin he is looking for is in the other direction, but when asked for some specifications, he pretends he was refering to the plane's cabin. ("Confirmed Dead")
Who knows: Hurley, Locke and Ben. Also Sawyer, Claire and Miles, although they don't know what the cabin and Jacob are.
  • Locke and Ben both gave him surprised looks when he mentioned the cabin. After the attack on the Barracks, they ask him to help them find the cabin.


Michael is Ben's spy on the freighter

Michael is Ben's spy on the freighter
Summary: Ben sent Tom to Manhattan to recruit Michael after his departure from the Island. After he agreed, they provided him with a fake name (Kevin Johnson), a fake passport, and a job as a deck hand on the Kahana, the freighter owned by Charles Widmore. Ben is doing this in an MEHP effort to stop Widmore from finding the Island. ("Meet Kevin Johnson")
Who knows: Michael, Ben, Tom, Locke, Hurley, Sawyer, Claire, Miles, Sayid, Desmond, Captain Gault, Frank, Keamy, Sun, Jin
  • After telling Locke in private first, Ben revealed the truth about Michael to Locke's group at the barracks. ("Meet Kevin Johnson")
  • After hearing his story, Sayid turned Michael over to Captain Gault as a known spy for Ben Linus; Desmond was present for this. ("Meet Kevin Johnson")
  • Captain Gault had Michael detained, and later told Keamy.
  • It is likely that the rest of the freighter crew are also aware of it.
  • Sun and Jin found out about it when they arrived on the freighter. ("There's No Place Like Home, Part 1")


Charlotte can speak Korean

Charlotte can speak Korean
Summary: As Daniel, Charlotte, Sun and Jin make their way to The Staff, Jin notices that Charlotte seems to react emotionally when he speaks to Sun in Korean about the future of their child. He later confronts her that night, and after he threatens to hurt Daniel, Charlotte begins speaking to Jin in Korean. ("Something Nice Back Home")

  • Jin found out after confronting Charlotte the night after they went to The Staff.
