Biography

Background

According to his MySpace account, Sam Thomas comes from New South Wales, Australia. He was with his girlfriend Sonya for almost eight years before the crash of Oceanic Flight 815. At the time she was working as a stewardess and he as a Technician for Oceanic. He was going to propose to her. (Find 815 clues/January 4)

After the Crash of Oceanic 815

Sam is shattered by the disappearance and possible death of Sonya. He had bought an engagement ring, and feels guilty that he had waited too long to ask her to marry him.

Sam has therefore been very vocal about his interest in finding the facts of the flight's disappearance, publicly expressing his unhappiness over the case's closure by Oceanic Airlines on GMN World News. Because of his "derogatory and unauthorised comments about Oceanic Air in public" he has been summarily dismissed by his company. (Find 815 clues/January 3)

Sam's room is covered in maps and information that he hopes will help him in finding the plane. His room also contains a pocketbook containing a manifest of nine prominent Flight 815 passengers: Kate, Sawyer, Jack, Sayid, Jin, Sun, Hurley, Claire and Locke. The information on each include origins and some basic facts.

After his appearance on the news, Sam received an email from someone who says that he or she knew Sonya. They sent a picture of her. After noticing incongruities in the image, Sam finds four messages in it: Sunda Trench, Christiane I, Black Rock and "Tell no one - Grave Consequences". He realizes that the email has something to do with The Maxwell Group, and finds the "Sunda" Islands on a map.

Upon Sam's request a friend of his, Tracey R supplied him with the details of Christiane I. It appears to be a salvage boat which is looking for a shipwreck (possibly the Black Rock?) somewhere in the deepest waters on the planet. After receiving this information, Sam decided to fly to the Sunda Islands to follow up on the mysterious clues and hitch a ride aboard the salvage boat. At the same time, he also tried to seek employment at another airline, Austral Air. Pulling the strings from yet another friend, David Massingham, he booked on a flight from Sydney to Darwin and from Darwin to Jakarta.

Aboard Christiane I

After boarding the Christiane I in Jakarta, Sam is initially turned away, as the captain claims he'll just be dead weight. But when the boat's chart plotter breaks, Sam fixes it, then the captain allows him to stay on board. A man named Talbot asks him why he wants to go to the Sunda Trench, and he lies and tells him that he just wants to "get away."

It is revealed that the Christiane I's mission is to search for a sunken slave trading ship called the Black Rock that disappeared in 1881 whilst returning from a gold mining expedition around Papua New Guinea. After a couple of days of sailing up and down the Sunda Trench, Sam is having second thoughts about going on the expedition aboard the Christiane I. He is still unclear about what any of it has to do with Oceanic Flight 815, and is skeptical about the significance of the email he received from the Maxwell Group, thinking it may be a prank. He concludes that he will get off at the next port. (Find 815 clues/January 11)

Sam asks Ockham to let him off the Christiane I at Christmas Island. Ockham tells him that he will be stuck on the ship for a while, as Talbot has him sticking to a narrow search grid to look for Black Rock.(Find 815 clues/January 14)

After some thinking, Sam reconsiders the need to get off. he finds out that Talbot is working for The Maxwell Group - the same people who had been sending him mysterious emails. This makes him think he's on the right track, after all. He also finds out what those cryptic emails were about. Within all those numbers were coordinates - longitude and latitude. He decides he'll check it out on Talbot's chart plotter. (Find 815 clues/January 18). When he does he finds out it is a location south of Bali. However, Talbot finds out what he was doing. When Sam confesses he is in touch with talbot's employers - The Maxwell Group - Talbot warns him that he doesn't know who he is dealing with. He tells Sam to stay away from the coordinates, because he won't find there what he is looking for. (Find 815 clues/January 21).

The lights that Sam saw

One night, when Sam Thomas was walking along the deck he noticed what appeared to be aurora lights out at sea. With the help of Tracey R he later researched them on the web. (Find 815 clues/January 24) He also reached a decision concerning the coordinates he had found. Sick of all the riddles he would get to them no matter what. (Find 815 clues/January 25).
