As with most television shows, Lost features a broad array of character relationships that deal with romance, sex, betrayal and loss. The relationships below all indicate or assume mutual feelings of desire or affection between pairs of characters, spanning from pre-crash, post-crash and post-rescue.

Relationship: Sarah Shephard (Ex-wife), Achara (Ex-lover) Dealt with in episodes: "Do No Harm", "Man of Science, Man of Faith", "The Hunting Party", "A Tale of Two Cities", "Stranger in a Strange Land" Details: Jack married Sarah, a woman whom he had miraculously saved by repairing her spine. Sarah had been involved in a collision with an SUV (driven by Adam Rutherford, Shannon's father) that left her paralyzed from the waist down. Despite all the odds, Jack fixes her, which ultimately led to their marriage. The night before the wedding, Jack has great difficulty writing his vows and voices some his doubt to his father, Christian Shephard, who reassures his son that commitment is what makes Jack "tick." During the wedding ceremony, an emotional Jack states as his unwritten vow that it wasn't he who had fixed Sarah, but rather, she had fixed him. However, during the course of their marriage, Sarah discovers that Jack's dedication to his work takes up the majority of his time, placing an inevitable strain to their relationship. One night, Jack was kissed by another woman, Gabriela, whose father was Jack's patient, and who had just died during the surgery. When he admits to Sarah about this kiss while promising her that he'll devote more time to their marriage, she, in turn, confesses that she had been seeing someone else and was leaving Jack. As their marriage finally dissolved, Jack increasingly became obsessed with discovering the identity of Sarah's lover to the point of mania and even suspected his own father of being Sarah's lover, the only evidence of this being that his phone number was on her cell phone's address book. Jack also embarked on a sexual relationship with Achara, a tattoo artist he met while in Thailand soon after his marriage with Sarah ended. The affair was brief, and it ended after she gave Jack his tattoo.

Kate

Relationship: Kevin Callis (Ex-husband), Tom Brennan (Childhood sweetheart) Dealt with in episodes: "Whatever the Case May Be", "Outlaws", "Born to Run", "I Do" Details: While still on the run for murdering her stepfather, Kate married Kevin Callis, a cop with the Miami Police Department. Kevin was not aware of Kate's fugitive status nor did he even know Kate's real name; she had revealed her name to him as 'Monica'. Sometime around six months into the marriage, Kate called the Marshal and pleaded with him to stop pursuing her, citing her love for Kevin. The Marshal made her a tantalizing, yet questionable deal, saying he will leave her alone if she really stays put; it's a rhetorical offer because he knows Kate has an inability to stay put in one place for very long. Driven by the Marshal's pursuit of her as well as a pregnancy scare, Kate decides to leave Kevin. She drugs him and reveals her fugitive status to him before leaving him tearfully behind. Kate's other meaningful relationship before the crash was with Tom, her childhood sweetheart. While on the run, Kate appeared at his home, which he shared with his wife and son. They drove out to a spot they used to come to as children, dug up their time capsule, which included Tom's toy airplane, and the two shared a kiss. The next day, Tom helped Kate gain access to see her mother one last time, but when Diane reacted violently upon seeing her daughter, Kate attempted to make a quick escape. Tom chose to accompany Kate, and was killed in the crossfire by a police bullet during the car chase. Kate's most prized possession is the toy plane.

Sawyer

Relationship: Cassidy (Ex-girlfriend) and others (including many one-night stands) Dealt with in episodes: "Confidence Man", "Outlaws", "The Long Con", "Every Man for Himself" Details: Before the crash, Sawyer, a con man, has, by and large, deceived and used people to gain an advantage, usually women like Mary Jo and Jessica. He has used one particular con on several occasions that involved him seducing married or recently divorced women, then alluring them to 'invest' on a phantom deal using their husband's money or their alimony, which he would then swindle. During one such instance, he tried to pull this con on Cassidy, a recent divorcee, who caught on to his con fairly quickly. Instead of turning him in, she requested him to teach her how to con, and he obliged. Over time, he claimed to have developed feelings for Cassidy. Ultimately, however, Sawyer ended up pulling a long con on Cassidy, swindling both her and an associate he was working with on obtaining Cassidy's money. Cassidy reported Sawyer to the authorities, and he went to jail. After about a year after he conned her, she visited him in jail and told him that she gave birth to their daughter, Clementine. Sawyer denied vehemently to being the father, but he later opened up a bank account for Clementine from the money he acquired in a prison con on a fellow inmate.

Charlie

Relationship: Lucy Heatherton (Ex-girlfriend), Lily, and various groupies Dealt with in episodes: "The Moth", "Homecoming", "Exodus, Part 2" Details: Charlie targets Lucy Heatherton, a rich British woman from Knightsbridge, in order to steal money for heroin. Lucy's father owns a rich corporation, which enables him and his daughter to live in comfort in a big house, with lots of precious artifacts and interesting ornaments. Lucy's father gets him a job at his company selling photocopiers. His first day of work finds him going through heroin withdrawals and he steals a valuable cigarette case, previously belonging to Winston Churchill, from his Lucy's house. Without any time to buy his drugs and get a fix, Charlie miserably fails at his job and loses his Lucy as a result of her discovering his attempted con of her and her father. Charlie also slept with another woman named Lily the night before the crash. This appears to be nothing more than a one night stand in which the girl seemed to be vying his access to drugs as much as sex.

Locke

Relationship: Helen (Ex-girlfriend), Helen (phone operator) (One-way infatuation) Dealt with in episodes: "Walkabout", "Orientation", "Lockdown" Details: Locke met Helen at an anger management support group, and the two hit it off immediately. She seemed kind, caring, and supportive, exactly the type of woman that John needed in his life as he was still recovering from his father's devastating betrayal. John began staying over at her house, but he would repeatedly leave in the middle of the night telling Helen he has trouble sleeping in beds other than his own. Helen, suspicious of this answer, followed him out one night and discovered him sitting in his car outside of his father's house. Helen was deeply upset by this situation, feeling like John would prefer his father's love to hers. John and Helen had a relationship that was significantly characterized by recurring appearances of John's father. When John proposed to Helen, she rejected him, feeling that she could not trust him after discovering the many lies he has told her about his father. While John pleaded with her to stay, Helen could not bring herself to forgive him, and stood firm by her decision to leave. The night before his walkabout tour in Australia, Locke spoke with a female on the phone he referred to as 'Helen', but the woman was not Helen, only a woman who was pretending to be 'Helen' for Locke. He has also mistakenly called Kate, 'Helen', after being knocked unconscious momentarily by a boar.

Shannon

Relationship: Bryan (Ex-boyfriend), Boone (Stepbrother) Dealt with in episodes: "Hearts and Minds" Details: Shannon has had several short-term relationships and all of them seemingly with a particular agenda. While living in Australia, Shannon and her boyfriend at the time, Bryan pull a con together on Boone by feigning an abusive relationship that Shannon knew Boone would try to intervene on her behalf. Sure enough, Boone offers Bryan $50,000 to leave Shannon and tells Bryan that he (Bryan) would be the third of Shannon's boyfriends he would attempt to pay off. Shortly thereafter, Bryan leaves Shannon and takes the money with him. Shannon comes to Boone's hotel room that evening, and she reveals that she knows that Boone is "in love with her." She kisses him, and it is presumed that the two had sex that night.

Relationship: Shannon (Stepsister) Dealt with in episodes: "Hearts and Minds" Details: Boone has spent considerable time, prior to the crash, bailing Shannon out of relationships with men. The night before boarding Flight 815, Boone tries to resist Shannon's advances in his hotel room after paying off yet another one of her boyfriends. However, he gives in to her, and afterwards he expresses some incredulity at her proposal that things should return to the way they were prior to their indiscretion.

Jin

Relationship: Sun (Wife) Dealt with in episodes: "House of the Rising Sun", "...In Translation", "...And Found", "The Whole Truth", "The Glass Ballerina", "Ji Yeon" Details: Jin, the son of a rural fisherman, literally bumped into Sun, who is the daughter of powerful corporate CEO. The two instantly connect and start dating. Class quickly becomes a non-issue, and Jin is able to muster the financial means to give her a ring. She happily accepts and expresses her surprise that her father has agreed so readily to the marriage. Jin tells Sun that her father has offered Jin a job as his personal assistant. Sun is leery, but doesn't dwell on it in her excitement to marry the man she loves. As Jin continues to work for Mr. Paik he becomes a cold and brittle man, and his relationship with Sun begins to suffer. The change in his demeanor stems from his duty to serve Sun's father, who forces Jin to perform unscrupulous acts on his behalf. Jin's fear of losing Sun prevents him from leaving his duty to her father, and it is apparent that he would do almost anything to sustain his marriage. Just before the flight, Jin talks with his father about his marriage and decides that he will do his last job for Sun's father in Los Angeles and Sydney before leaving Korea permanently with Sun.

Sun

Relationship: Jin (Husband), Jae Lee (Ex-lover) Dealt with in episodes: "House of the Rising Sun", "...In Translation", "...And Found", "The Whole Truth", "The Glass Ballerina", "D.O.C." Details: Before meeting Jin, Sun was initially introduced to Jae Lee, the son of a wealthy hotelier, by a matchmaking scheme from their respective parents. Coincidentally, Jin was working as a doorman at Jae Lee's Seoul Gateway Hotel when Sun first met Jae Lee. The two hit it off, but Jae surprisingly reveals to Sun that he'd fallen in love with an American girl and was planning on moving to the United States to be with her. Sun seems disappointed in this, but says nothing. As she leaves the luncheon, she walks right into Jin. She and Jin fall in love, and she seems to be especially won by the simplicity of their relationship. Sun has proven that she would sacrifice her relationship with her father to protect Jin and her husband's honor. However, when Jin begins working for her father, the changes in his personality affect her deeply and she decides that she wants to leave him. She begins taking English lessons from Jae Lee, who has since returned to Korea after a failed relationship with the American woman. Before long, Jae Lee confesses her feelings for her and they consummate their relationship. Unfortunately, Sun's father catches them in flagrante and Jin, not knowing who Jae Lee is nor that his wife is having an affair, is ordered to kill Jae. Sun, understanding that Jae Lee's death was not an accident, continues to go forward with her plan to leave Jin at Sydney Airport, where she's made arrangements for a hasty exit. But the tender side of Jin causes Sun to waver in her plans when he presents her with a small white orchid, reminding her of the relationship they had once had. She decides not to leave and boards Flight 815 with him.

Relationship: Thomas (Ex-boyfriend) Dealt with in episodes: "Raised by Another" Details: Claire was in a relationship with Thomas when she discovered that she was pregnant. When she told Thomas the news he seemed excited and convinced her to keep the baby, promising he would be there for her. Encouraged by this, Claire moved in with Thomas. However, it wasn't long before Thomas started feeling doubt about the whole situation and accused her of not taking the 'pill' to avoid her condition. They argue, and Thomas breaks up with her.

Sayid

Relationship: Nadia (Former love interest) Dealt with in episodes: "Solitary", "The Greater Good" Details: Sayid and Nadia were childhood friends growing up in Iraq. As adults, their paths cross again when Sayid, a communications officer with the Iraqi Republican Guard, is ordered to interrogate Nadia, who is now a member of an insurgent group against the Gulf War. Sayid doesn't recognize her at first, but she does. After explaining why she had betrayed her country, Nadia tells Sayid that she understands his duty to his position and fully expects him to torture her. Instead, Sayid tries to help her in meager ways by secretly bringing her food, and tries to convince her to implicate fellow members of her sect to save her own life. She refuses. When Sayid's commanding officer orders him to kill her, he enables her escape by shooting his superior officer, then shooting himself to make it look like Nadia shot both to escape. After the war, Sayid cannot forget Nadia and his search leads him to work with the CIA to infiltrate a terrorist cell that includes his old friend, Essam. In return, the CIA offers Sayid the information that would lead him to see Nadia. After Essam is killed, Sayid chooses take a later flight to Los Angeles in order to give Essam a proper burial, and this choice leads to him being a passenger of Flight 815, deterring his chance to reunite with Nadia.

Relationship: Susan Lloyd (Ex-girlfriend and his son's mother) Dealt with in episodes: "Special", "Adrift" Details: Michael and Susan were in a relationship when Susan gets pregnant with their son, Walt, but due to Susan's wishes they do not get married. After Walt was born, Susan was offered a job as an international lawyer but the job required her to move to Amsterdam. She tells Michael that she's taking the job and taking Walt with her. Michael strongly protests the idea, but relents. While in Amsterdam, Susan falls in love with her boss, Brian Porter. When she tells Michael this over the phone, Michael gets angry and hangs up the phone and is immediately struck by oncoming traffic while crossing the street. Susan visits him at the rehabilitation center, and tells Michael that she and Brian are getting married. She wants Michael to allow Brian to adopt Walt. Although Michael fights to retain his legal right as Walt's father, he ultimately allows Susan and Brian full custody of Walt. When Walt is around 10 years old, Susan contracts an illness and dies. Brian gives Michael custody of Walt, and reveals that Brian adopting Walt was wholly Susan's idea.

Hurley

Relationship: Starla (Ex-girlfriend) Dealt with in episodes: "Everybody Hates Hugo", "Tricia Tanaka Is Dead" Details: Hurley claims to have always had trouble getting a girlfriend. After he wins the lottery, he suddenly feels empowered to do as he pleases by quitting his job and boldly asking out his crush, Starla, who works at the local music shop he frequents. He makes sure to ask her out before he claims his lottery winnings because he has an uncanny feeling that the lottery money will bring many changes to his life, and he doesn't expect these changes to all be fortunate. Proving his feelings accurate, Hurley later mentions that after everyone found out about his winnings Starla ended up leaving him for his best friend, Johnny. This is just one of many unfortunate incidents he attributes to the curse of the numbers.

Rose

Relationship: Bernard (Husband) Dealt with in episodes: "S.O.S." Details: Rose and Bernard meet when Rose's car gets stuck in the snow and Bernard offers to help push it out. Afterwards, Rose asks Bernard out for coffee. The two begin dating and on one date while visiting the Niagara Falls, Bernard proposes to her. Rose hesitates to say yes, telling Bernard that she is dying of cancer. Bernard decides that he is not afraid of her illness and tells her still wants to marry her. On their honeymoon trip he takes her to Australia to see Isaac of Uluru, a faith healer, hoping that he will cure her cancer. Rose gets upset with Bernard, but goes in to see Isaac. Even after Isaac tells her that he cannot cure her, Rose pretends to Bernard that the healer has succeeded just so that Bernard will be at peace with the situation in order to enjoy the rest of their time together.

Relationship: Rose (Wife) Dealt with in episodes: "S.O.S." Details: Bernard meets Rose when Rose's car gets stuck in the snow and he offers to help push it out. They begin dating and he proposes to her on a date at Niagara Falls. When Rose tells him she has cancer, Bernard is undeterred by this fate, and tells her that he still wants to marry her. He takes her to Australia on their honeymoon so that she can meet Isaac of Uluru, a well-known faith healer, and be cured of her cancer. He is led to believe that the healer has succeeded after Rose sees Isaac and the two leave Australia on Flight 815.

Ana Lucia

Relationship: Danny Dealt with in episodes: "Collision", "Exodus, Part 1" Details: Not much is known about Danny, who was either Ana Lucia's ex-boyfriend or ex-husband. He left her when she lost her baby while on duty during a robbery. She claims that it is for the best that he left, but her body language seems to suggest some discomfort in talking about the relationship. Upon discovering the identity of the man who shot her during the incident, Jason McCormack, she took it upon herself to follow him one night and shoot him in revenge for what he did to her life. She also briefly flirted with Jack while the two were waiting to board their flight at Sydney Airport.

Relationship: David (Ex-husband) Dealt with in episodes: "Live Together, Die Alone" Details: During an encounter with Desmond, Libby tells him that he should have her sailboat, the Elizabeth, to use for his race. She tells him that the boat was named after her and given to her by her dead husband, David.

Relationship: Penelope Widmore (Ex-girlfriend), Ruth (Ex-fiancée) Dealt with in episodes: "Live Together, Die Alone", "Flashes Before Your Eyes", "Catch-22" Details: For six years, Desmond dated Ruth, a local girl. The week prior to their wedding, he left her due to wedding jitters and joined a monastery in Eddington, Scotland. On the day Desmond was relieved of his duties as an apprenticed monk at the monastery, Desmond meets Penelope where she's picking up a shipment of wine to deliver to Carlisle. They start dating and after some time, she moves in with Desmond in his flat. After two years together, Desmond decides that he wants to marry her. He goes to see Penelope's father, Charles Widmore to ask his permission for Penny's hand in marriage. Widmore insults Desmond, saying he is not worthy of Penelope. As he later relived through his unconsciousness after The Swan's implosion, he went ahead to a jewelry shop to buy a ring despite his encounter with Widmore. However, at the last minute, he did not buy the ring and broke up with Penny soon after telling her that he will never be good enough for her. He joins the army and is later dishonorably discharged. He learns from Penelope's father that all his letters to her were collected by her father and never delivered. Desmond decides to compete in Widmore's boat race to prove to Widmore that he is worthy of Penelope. While training one day at a Los Angles stadium Desmond encounters Penny, who tries to convince him to come back to her. He refuses, citing his need to "get his honor back." During the race, he blacks out and ends up on the island.

Relationship: Pairing Dealt with in episodes: "Pilot, Part 1", "House of the Rising Sun", "What Kate Did", "I Do", "Not in Portland", "The Man from Tallahassee", "Left Behind", "Through the Looking Glass", "Something Nice Back Home", "There's No Place Like Home, Parts 2 & 3" Details: Since the "Pilot, Part 1" and throughout the series, Jack and Kate have shared a strong friendship and an attraction to one another that, at times, seems tenuous and apprehensive. Their bond was first forged on the day of the crash when Kate sewed up Jack's wound and he relayed a past experience on confronting fear, which Kate has taken to heart and used to get her through difficult times. While Kate has made several attempts to flirt with Jack, she has often been met with resistance on Jack's part, no doubt prompted by her early attempts to deceive and use him for her personal gain. However, Jack has found it difficult to deny that he is attracted to her, which in one particular instance resulted in a passionate kiss that left both of them surprised by the sudden act. Kate later apologized for kissing Jack, but Jack told her he was not sorry. Jack has often pushed her away, confused by Kate's motives. This has led Kate to spend more time with Sawyer, and the two formed a bond. Despite keeping her and his own feelings for her at bay, he has gone to various lengths to protect her and her well-being. While held hostage by the Others, Jack stumbled upon a video monitor that showed Kate in Sawyer's arms, and this left him shocked and upset. He decided to enable their escape off Hydra Island, but once back at the beach, Kate took it upon herself to rescue Jack from the Others' camp. While there, she discovers that Jack knows about her and Sawyer's indiscretion. During a struggle between Kate and Juliet, Juliet says that Kate broke Jack's heart when she slept with Sawyer. On the way to the radio tower, Jack finally tells Kate that he loves her. When Jack's appendix needs to be taken out, prompting Juliet to perform an emergency surgery, he insists on Kate's presence during the procedure. Juliet tells Kate that even though he kissed her [Juliet], he was only trying to prove that he wasn't in love with someone else. When a bomb is moments from exploding on the freighter Jack finds Kate and tells her that he will not leave without her.

Sawyer and Kate

Relationship: Pairing Dealt with in episodes: "Confidence Man", "Outlaws", "What Kate Did", "The Glass Ballerina", "I Do", "Catch-22", "Through the Looking Glass", "Eggtown", "There's No Place Like Home, Parts 2 & 3" Details: Sawyer often vies for Kate's affection, but with mixed results. The two kiss early on, but only because Sawyer demands it in order for him to give up Shannon's inhalers (which he did not have). While Kate resisted the notion of getting close to Sawyer, she's discovered they have a lot in common and finds herself surprisingly attracted to him. However, because of their previous social tendencies (he cons, she runs), their relationship tends to run into trouble when dealing with trust and reliability. While caged together at Hydra Island, Sawyer becomes the target of Pickett's vengeance at his wife's death (who was shot by Sun). During a beating, Pickett asks Kate if she loves Sawyer and she responds that she does. However, during a tiff, Kate tells Sawyer that she only said that so Pickett would stop beating Sawyer. Sometime later, they have an emotional argument and Kate kisses Sawyer. They make love in the cages. After their lovemaking, Sawyer asks Kate if she really loves him. She stays silent for some time refusing to answer, but gives him a kiss. Sawyer responds that he loves her too. Back at the beach, Sawyer tries to have sex with Kate but Kate scoffs at the notion. Later that night, Kate enters Sawyer's tent and starts kissing him but he notices that Kate is crying. The next day Sawyer gives Kate a mixtape she jokingly requested, but asks if Jack having dinner with Juliet was the reason for the night before. Sawyer and Kate have a tense moment on the way to the radio tower when the subject of Kate's possible pregnancy turns up. He disdainfully tells her that he hopes she isn't. After the camp splits, Kate goes back to the Barracks for a little while, and she and Sawyer spend the night together but do not have sex. Kate tells him she's not pregnant, and his immediate reaction upsets Kate. Kate gets up to leave and Sawyer tells Kate that she'll come running back to him the minute Kate is upset with Jack. Kate slaps him and leaves. As Jack, Sayid, Hurley, Sawyer, and Kate leave the island on the chopper, Frank tells the group that the chopper is losing fuel. Sawyer whispers something in Kate's ear, to her confusion. He kisses her and jumps off the chopper and into the ocean. He survives and swims back to shore.

Jack and Juliet

Relationship: Pairing Dealt with in episodes: "A Tale of Two Cities", "Stranger in a Strange Land", "Through the Looking Glass", "The Other Woman", "Something Nice Back Home" Details: Like Sawyer and Kate, Jack and Juliet have a lot in common - they’re both brilliant doctors, and they share the highly motivated goal of wanting to get off the island. Jack met Juliet on Hydra Island while he was being held captive by the Others of which she was a member of for the past three years. She became his main contact during his captivity, bringing him food and water. When Jack discovered that Ben was afflicted with a large tumor on his spinal cord Juliet asked Jack to perform the surgery, but with the intention to kill Ben and make it look like an accident. Jack told both Ben and Juliet that he wouldn’t perform the surgery at all, then changed his mind after they used Kate and Sawyer as leverage. In order to save his own life, Ben ordered Juliet to help Sawyer and Kate escape, and in exchange, he promised Juliet he’d let her go home. Juliet shot Pickett in order to get this task accomplished. Soon afterwards, Juliet was held responsible for her crime and ordered to be executed by the Others’ Isabel. Jack told Ben that if Ben commutes Juliet’s sentence, he will take care of Ben to ensure Ben’s health return to normal. Ben agreed. During a struggle with Kate, Juliet informed Kate that Kate had hurt Jack by sleeping with Sawyer. When it came time for Jack, Kate and Sayid to head back to the beach, Jack insisted that Juliet come back with them. He later told Juliet that she was now ‘one of them [the survivors]’. Although it was revealed that Juliet was still working for Ben in a plot to kidnap the pregnant female castaways, she revealed Ben’s plan to Jack, and the two hatched a plan to foil Ben. Juliet has claimed to Jack that Ben thinks Juliet belongs to him [Ben]. Juliet expressed her fear for Jack’s safety while telling him of her feelings for him. Jack reassured her that he’s not afraid of Ben and that Ben can come and find him. After performing an appendectomy on Jack, Juliet tells Kate that he kissed her [Juliet], but tells Kate that he's in love with someone else [Kate].

Jin and Sun

Relationship: Married Dealt with in episodes: "Pilot, Part 1", "House of the Rising Sun", "...And Found", "The Whole Truth", "The Glass Ballerina", "D.O.C.", "Ji Yeon", "There's No Place Like Home, Parts 2 & 3" Details: When they crashed on the island, Jin and Sun appeared to have an unbalanced relationship. Jin was overbearing and overprotective of Sun's well-being and generally prevented her from interacting with the other castaways or letting her do what she pleased. His misguided sense of control over her stemmed from his duty to protect his wife in a foreign environment. Unhappy with his treatment of her, Sun found ways to defy her husband that eventually led to an understanding and trust between the two that has since evolved into a loving and balanced relationship. Once their marriage got back on track, Sun soon discovered that she was pregnant. Sun tells Jin of her condition and he is overjoyed, but Sun tells him that before they crashed she was told by their fertility doctor that Jin is infertile. Jin believes it to be a miracle, but privately Sun is afraid that they baby would turn to be Jae Lee's baby, with whom she had an affair with not long before they left Sydney. She also finds out from Juliet that women who get pregnant on the island die during their second trimester along with their fetuses. When Juliet performs an ultrasound on Sun it reveals that the baby was conceived on-island thus indicating that Jin is the father and that Sun will die if she does not get off the island. Despite the latter, Sun is relieved and overjoyed that the baby belongs to Jin. Once the camps split, Sun starts feeling unsure about the freighters' motives and tries to leave with Jin for the Barracks where Locke is. Juliet stops them by telling Jin that Sun had an affair before the crash. Jin forgives her and tells her that because of the kind of man he was before - cold and unloving - he understands why she had the affair. Sun tells him that the baby is unequivocally his. As Jin makes his way up to the main deck of the freighter moments before the bomb goes off, Sun is taken into the chopper. She insists on waiting for Jin, but the chopper takes off much to Sun's anguish. The bomb goes off on the freighter with Jin still on it.

Charlie and Claire

Relationship: Pairing Dealt with in episodes: "Walkabout", "Raised by Another", "Fire + Water", "Live Together, Die Alone", "The Beginning of the End" Details: Charlie and Claire developed a bond throughout most of the first season, as Charlie reached out to Claire as a friend. However, as Claire starts to trust Charlie and lean on him, she is kidnapped by Ethan who also attempts to murder Charlie by hanging him from a large banyan tree. When Claire returns she does not remember the events or the people she has met since the day of the crash. Charlie reaches out to her again to gain her trust back. After Aaron is born, Charlie voluntarily assumes the role of 'daddy' to Claire's 'mommy', a bit to Claire's surprise. But when Claire discovers Charlie is/was a heroin addict, she gets angry at for lying to her and the situation only grows worse when Charlie, prompted by dreams that he interprets as prophecies, tries to kidnap Aaron to baptize him in the ocean. After this incident, Locke decides to watch over Claire while Charlie looks on jealously. Things seem to be on a standstill for a while until Charlie returns from the the Swan Station discharge, and Claire looks genuinely happy to see him alive and well. That evening, she kisses him. However, once Charlie discovers that Desmond's clairvoyant flashes all revolve around his own death, he volunteers himself to swim down to the Looking Glass station to un-jam incoming transmissions. Realizing his doomed fate, he says goodbye to Claire but doesn't tell her that he doesn't plan to return. During his heroic act, he drowns. Claire is devastated upon hearing of Charlie's death.

Desmond and Penelope

Relationship: Former lovers Dealt with in episodes: "Live Together, Die Alone", "Flashes Before Your Eyes", "Catch-22", "The Constant", "There's No Place Like Home, Parts 2 & 3" Details: After arriving on the island and realizing the difficulty in getting back, Desmond laments losing the possibility of ever reuniting with Penelope. His only memory of her is the photograph they two took on the day he broke up with her, and a letter she wrote to him that professed her love for him. When Desmond turns the fail-safe key to save everyone else on the island, this reverberation is picked up by two men who were hired by Penelope to flag the electromagnetic activity emitted from the island, indicating that Penny has been searching for Desmond for the past three years. Desmond's flashes after the implosion allow him to 'see' a parachutist crashing onto the island, and Desmond is convinced the parachutist was sent in by Penny to rescue him. However, when Charlie spoke to Penny briefly through a transmission at the Looking Glass station, Charlie communicates to Desmond that the parachutist is not from Penny's boat. Moments before the flooding of The Looking Glass, Desmond caught a glimpse of Penny on the transmission feed but wasn't able to speak with her. While on the freighter, Desmond, in desperate need of a constant that ties him with the past and the present, goes back to a time when he last saw Penny. Desmond calls Penny from the freighter, and since Desmond's consciousness went back in time to ask her to answer her phone at a specific moment in the future, he's able to speak to her, and in turn she then becomes the constant he needs to survive. They share an emotional moment in which tell each other that they still love one another. As the remaining survivors are stranded at sea, including Desmond, they are discovered by Penelope's yacht. They share a happy reunion three years in the waiting.

Bernard and Rose

Relationship: Married Dealt with in episodes: "Collision", "S.O.S." Details: Bernard spends the first 48 days on the Island under the assumption that Rose is dead, but Rose believed that Bernard was alive. When Sawyer and Michael tell him she is alive, he is eager to find their camp. They reunite in "Collision", and Rose tells him that she believed the Island healed her cancer. They decide to stay on the island for the rest of their lives.

Sayid and Shannon

Relationship: Pairing Dealt with in episodes: "Whatever the Case May Be", "...In Translation", "The Greater Good", "Collision" Details: Shannon and Sayid began their bond when Sayid asked Shannon to help him translate Rousseau's French transmissions. Over time, the two became close. Boone's death became a test for their relationship as Shannon turned inward, and asked Sayid to kill Locke for her in revenge for her belief that Locke killed her brother. When Sayid refused, Shannon took it upon herself to do the deed but was stopped by Sayid in the nick of time. Despite their cultural and social differences, Sayid and Shannon eventually got back together and that culminated in a romantic night Sayid had planned out for her. However, when Shannon started seeing visions of Walt, she was upset that Sayid had trouble believing her. When Sayid saw the vision himself however, he told her he believed her and they told each other that they loved each other. However, as Shannon tried in vain to chase after Walt again, she was shot in the stomach by Ana Lucia, who thought she was an Other. Sayid buried Shannon, and spoke at her funeral on the beach.

Hurley and Libby

Relationship: Pairing Dealt with in episodes: "Fire + Water", "Dave", "Two for the Road" Details: Hurley became interested in Libby when she joined the castaways. The two slowly formed a relationship that culminated with their first and only kiss. Libby was a positive influence on Hurley as she tried to get him to stay healthy on the island. Per Syaid's request, Hurley decided to take Libby to a secluded area on the beach for their first date. When Hurley forgot to bring blankets, Libby offered to retrieve them from the hatch. Michael, startled by her appearance after having just shot Ana Lucia, shoots Libby in the stomach. Jack is unable to save her and she dies.

Sawyer and Ana Lucia

Relationship: Pairing Dealt with in episodes: "Two for the Road" Details: During the brief time they'd known each other, Ana Lucia and Sawyer have always struggled to gain the upper hand over the other. Both placed some importance in acquiring guns, which to them equated power and authority. Ana Lucia, in fear for her safety from the Others, was intent on getting a gun from Sawyer who was in possession of all of the camp's guns. After getting initially turned down, she tried a different tactic; she seduced Sawyer and swiped the one he had in his pocket without his knowledge. She was later shot by Michael, ironically by that same gun. Sawyer was visibly shaken by her death, and admitted to Jack that he had slept with her.

Paulo and Nikki

Relationship: Pairing Dealt with in episodes: "Exposé" Details: After the crash, Nikki frantically looks for Paulo. She finds him along the shore of the beach, not too far from the crash and appearing shellshocked. After getting his attention she asks urgently about their bag with the diamonds. Paulo is surprised at Nikki's concern about the diamonds. A few days later, they decide to search for the bag. When Ethan asks about their search they tell him that Paulo needs his nicotine gum because he was a smoker. They are unsuccessful in turning up their bag and they soon settle in their new life. Nikki befriends Arzt and he tells her about the female Medusa Spider, whose bite can paralyze a living being for eight hours but not kill them. The two venture out into the jungle and one day they discover the Pearl station. They also discover the waterfall where Sawyer and Kate had found the Marshal's gun case, and there Paulo finds the diamonds. He hides them from Nikki by storing them in the Pearl's toilet reservoir, but Nikki finds out about Paulo's scheme when she finds his nicotine gum in the sand. Later, she drags him out into the jungle and confronts him about the diamonds. Nikki gets angry when Paulo refuses to reveal where they are, and she flings a Medusa spider at him which bites his neck. As he undergoes his state of paralysis, Paulo tells her that he hid them because he feared she would leave him once she had the diamonds in her possession. Nikki herself soon gets bitten by a Medusa spider, and she runs towards the beach. Despite the fact that Nikki and Paulo are not dead, only paralyzed, Sawyer and Hurley dig their graves and bury the couple alive.

Relationship: Pairing Dealt with in episodes: "The Glass Ballerina", "Not in Portland", "Greatest Hits", "Meet Kevin Johnson", "The Shape of Things to Come" Details: Karl was being locked in a cage by Ben in an attempt to keep him away from Ben's daughter, Alex. Alex was determined to prevent this from happening, and she later struck up a deal with Kate and Sawyer to help her free Karl in exchange for a boat to take them off Hydra Island. They broke into Room 23, where he was being forced to watch various images while listening to loud techno music. Alex was prevented from leaving the smaller island by Juliet, and settled for Karl to escape with Kate and Sawyer. Ben later revealed to Alex that the reason why he wanted to keep Karl away from her was to prevent her from getting pregnant, thus causing her to die. They were later reunited at the radio tower. Karl was with Alex and Danielle when he was shot and killed. Later, Alex was shot in the head by Keamy during a stand-off with Ben at the Barracks.

Danny and Colleen Pickett

Relationship: Married Dealt with in episodes: "The Glass Ballerina", "The Cost of Living" Details: Pickett and Colleen were married, but when Colleen went out to Pala Ferry to hijack Desmond's sailboat she was shot in the stomach by Sun. The Others brought her back to Hydra Island but Jack was unable to resuscitate her. They held a funeral for her by setting her body out to sea. Pickett was furious, and he set out to avenge Colleen's death by targeting Sawyer. Juliet shot and killed Pickett when he refused to follow Ben's orders in allowing Kate and Sawyer go free.

Relationship: Pairing Dealt with in episodes: "One of Us", "The Other Woman" Details: Sometime after Juliet arrived on the island, she struck up a friendship with Goodwin, who provided her with some solace as she's prevented from leaving the island. Juliet found out that Goodwin was married to the Others' psychiatrist, Harper. Goodwin and Juliet embarked on an affair despite this, and when Harper tried to warn Juliet about the consequences Juliet mistook Harper's concern as nothing more than jealousy. When Flight 815 crashed, Ben sent Goodwin out to infiltrate the Tailies, where he ended up getting killed by Ana Lucia. When Ben showed Juliet Goodwin's dead body she was devastated.

Relationship: Pairing (Formerly engaged) Dealt with in episodes: "Through the Looking Glass", "Eggtown", "Something Nice Back Home", "There's No Place Like Home, Parts 2 & 3" Details: During Kate's trial, Jack is called to the stand as a defense witness. His testimony is full of lies about how Kate was the true hero by administering first aid to the survivors. Before he can continue Kate tells him to stop. The D.A. then asks if Jack still loves the defendant. Pausing for a moment, Jack finally replies, "No. Not anymore." After Kate is freed by the nature of her plea deal, Jack meets Kate in the parking garage. He reveals that he had lied about saying he didn't love Kate anymore. Kate is friendly and invites Jack over to her house to see her "son," Aaron. He declines, and Kate tells him that when he is OK with her "son," he is still welcome to come over to see them. Soon after this encounter, Jack decides to take Kate up on her offer and he and Kate engage in an established relationship, living together with Aaron (Jack has taken over as a father figure to the boy). He asks Kate to marry him, and she says yes. However, over time, Jack becomes a despondent man who is addicted to alcohol and painkillers. During this time, he's made repeated calls to Kate for two days straight. When she finally agrees to meet him at the airport, Kate is struck by his disheveled state. Jack tries to convince Kate that they must return to the island, to which she disagrees and starts to drive away. However, she stops and backs up her car. She angrily tells Jack that she does not want to go back to the island. Kate slaps him when he mentions Aaron, and she bitterly tells him that she still has to explain to Aaron why Jack is not there to read to him every night. Upset and furious, she drives away.

Relationship: Elsa (ex-lover/assignment) Dealt with in episodes: "The Economist" Details: Roughly a year after Nadia's death, Sayid meets Elsa at a cafe in Germany. They strike up a conversation and go on several dates. One evening, as they lay in bed together, Elsa muses that she doesn't know that much about Sayid's background. As Elsa checks on a page from her boss Sayid tries to convince Elsa to leave Berlin, fearing for her safety. Suddenly, when Elsa emerges from the bathroom after getting dressed, she shoots Sayid with a gun and wounds him. While Elsa speaks to her boss over the phone about Sayid's condition, Sayid surreptitiously reaches for his gun and shoots her twice, killing her. Elsa was one of Sayid's targets...a means for Sayid to avenge his wife's death, and according to Ben, to save 'their friends.'

Relationship: Nadia (ex-wife) Dealt with in episodes: "The Shape of Things to Come", "There's No Place Like Home, Part 1" Details: After the Oceanic Six's press conference immediately after their arrival to Honolulu, Nadia sought out Sayid and they tearfully reunited. They married, but she was shortly killed in 2005 near the corner of La Brea and Santa Monica Blvd. by, according to Ben, a mercenary sent in by Charles Widmore. Sayid is devastated as he goes to Tikrit to bury Nadia. It is here where Sayid agrees to work for Ben as a mercenary in order to avenge Nadia's murder.
