Rafts

Two rafts were built by a team of survivors led by Michael, in hopes of finding a shipping lane and securing rescue for the castaways. The second, and presumably the first, were built in a catamaran style, the same style of boat that would have been used by Polynesian Islanders to travel the Pacific Ocean. A third, inflatable raft was also provided by Desmond's sailboat, Elizabeth.

First raft

The first raft was built by Michael in an attempt to get his son Walt off the Island. Sawyer 'bought a ticket' on the raft by using cable from the plane as currency.

It was set on fire; Jin was suspected of starting the fire since he had a grudge with Michael. Sun revealed Jin's innocence, and in turn everybody found out she spoke English. ("...In Translation")

The raft was in fact burned by Walt because he didn't want to leave the Island. He first told John ("...In Translation"), then Michael. ("Born to Run")

Second raft

The second raft was also built by Michael, but this time Walt was more keen to leave, and help. Jin wanted to get on the raft and so helped build it. Sawyer kept his 'ticket' by half-heartedly 'keeping guard'.

Michael drank water poisoned by Sun (Sawyer was initially suspected) after Kate wanted off the Island herself (bagging Sawyer's ticket after Michael banned him from the raft) after realizing she would be caught for her past crimes once the media got involved. Kate convinced Sun to do it with the reasoning that if Michael was poisoned, Jin would have to stay.

Sawyer was invited back on the raft after he revealed Kate was a fugitive and Kate was then suspected to be the poisoner. Kate decided to keep the fact that Sun was the real poisoner a secret. ("Born to Run")

The second raft was launched with Walt, Sawyer, Michael, and Jin aboard, but was blown up by the Others after they captured Walt. ("Exodus, Part 2")

Through tidal action, navigational problems, or some other means, the raft seemed to be on a course that circled the Island or at least paralleled the coast of the Island rather than moving out to sea. ("Adrift")

Inflatable raft from the Elizabeth

The inflatable raft was included with Desmond's sailboat, Elizabeth. Desmond detached the raft and brought it to shore before Sayid departed on the Elizabeth with Sun and Jin. ("Live Together, Die Alone") It did not have an engine, and was operated by oars. It also contained a red supplies bag.

Kahana's ship's tender

The ship's tender is a Zodiac raft aboard the Kahana. After Kevin Johnson had disabled the engines, Minkowski and Brandon got bored and took the raft out but had to turn around due to health complications. ("The Constant") Several days later Captain Gault fought crew members attempting to desert on the raft. ("Meet Kevin Johnson")

It was then given to Sayid by Capitan Gault so he could travel back to the island to start ferrying survivors back to the Kahana. Gault told Sayid to make sure he navigated the raft on a bearing of 305.
