Prisoner and hostage situations have been used repeatedly in the storyline of Lost. Hostage situations are broadly defined as the taking of prisoners with a specific and separate objective other than kidnapping as its own reason.

Off-Island
Kate, among other customers, is held hostage at the bank ("Whatever the Case May Be")
- Kate, Six Foot Five, Jason, and Baseball Hat rob a bank, taking Mark Hutton and the customers of the bank hostage. ("Whatever the Case May Be")
On-Island
Bernard, Sayid and Jin are held at gunpoint ("Through the Looking Glass")
- Ethan took Charlie hostage for the objective of helping his kidnapping of Claire. ("All The Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues")
- Desmond took John Locke hostage at gunpoint (and Kate prisoner) as leverage when Jack entered the Swan armed. ("Man of Science, Man of Faith")
- Bea Klugh, Tom, Ben, and the Others took Jack, Kate, and Sawyer hostage both for their own reasons, as well as for warning the Losties to stay away from their side of the island through a message sent by Hurley. ("Live Together, Die Alone")
- Sayid Jarrah and Kate took Ms. Klugh hostage outside The Flame when Mikhail Bakunin held Locke at gunpoint. ("Enter 77")
- Locke takes both Ben and Alex hostage, while Kate and Sayid are held prisoner by the Others. ("The Man from Tallahassee")
- Ryan Pryce, Tom, Jason (Other), and other Others take Jin, Bernard, and Sayid hostage at their camp. ("Through the Looking Glass")
- Locke has taken Charlotte hostage, as he believes she can be of use. She is then traded for Miles by Sayid. ("The Economist")

- Eko was taken prisoner as a child by the thug captain ("The 23rd Psalm")
- Sayid and Tariq being held by U.S. forces in Iraq. ("One of Them")
- Desmond being in Southway Garrison after "failing to follow orders". ("Live Together, Die Alone")
- Jack being in jail after assaulting his father. ("A Tale of Two Cities")
- Sawyer was in jail, but was set free after tricking Munson into revealing the location of stolen money.("Every Man for Himself")
- Sayid being held by Amira and Sami. ("Enter 77")
On-Island
"Henry Gale" is held in The Swan's gun vault ("Two for the Road")
Anthony Cooper is held prisoner by the Others ("The Man from Tallahassee")
- After following the cable, Sayid was captured and held prisoner and tortured by Danielle Rousseau in her camp. ("Solitary")
- Walt being captured by Tom and the Others for their own reasons. However later Walt served as a hostage when Ben was held by the Losties, and Michael was captured by the Others: Walt was leverage for the Others to convince Michael to free Ben. ("Exodus, Part 2") ("Three Minutes")

- Juliet was held prisoner by the Others (and had a trial) after she killed Pickett ("Stranger in a Strange Land")
- Anthony Cooper was held by the Others, and later by Locke in the Black Rock. ("The Man from Tallahassee") ("The Brig")
- Ben was taken prisoner by the Losties near the radio tower. ("Through the Looking Glass")
- Locke takes Charlotte prisoner, refusing to let her join her people. ("Confirmed Dead")
- Miles is traded for Charlotte. ("The Economist")
- Sayid and Desmond were detained in the Kahana's sick bay. ("The Constant")
The Lost Experience
- Alvar Hanso is being held by Thomas Mittelwerk, who has taken actions in the name of Hanso and The Hanso Foundation. See the Norway video.
- William T. Kilpatrick was kidnapped in a Dodge Sprinter van.
