Previously on Lost

Before the beginning of most LOST episodes, the words "Previously on Lost" are heard. It is not known for certain who provides the voiceover; conflicting sources say it's either Carlton Cuse [1] or Lloyd Braun [2]. These words are followed by a series of short clips that recap the week before. All of this lasts for approximately one minute, 45 seconds.

The purpose of these Previously on Lost clips is to both remind viewers about current and past storylines, as well as aid comprehension for those who may not have seen the last few episodes of the show. In some cases, speech and actions are edited for several reasons; Originally, in "Live Together, Die Alone", Benjamin Linus said "Your friends are coming home with us". In the Previously on Lost for "A Tale of Two Cities" Ben says "You're coming with us".

Example

The Previously on Lost from the episode "Orientation" sees the following concept:

  • "Previously on Lost" is said, during which the first clip is shown. We follow this clip of a Jack/Desmond running scene. There is a condensed version of events, including Desmond saying that he is training for a race. The two also exchange names.
  • On the Island, we see Jack investigating the Swan, and the magnetic force acting on the key around his neck.
  • We then see Kate tied up, trying to get out, as well as Locke being ordered to type in the Numbers.
  • The dramatic cliffhanger is shown between Jack, Desmond and Locke showdown. [End Dramatic Music]
  • The arrival of the Raft survivors on land, and the Tailies appearance. [Smash out].
