Synopsis
Flashback
Charlie
Charlie sits nervously grimacing in his seat on Oceanic Flight 815. The stewardess approaches him warily, asking if he is okay. Trying to act calm, he curtly brushes her off, prompting her to head to the back of the plane and whisper to her colleagues about his behavior. Tapping his ring against the seat erratically, Charlie notices several members of staff heading towards him. He rises from his seat and rushes to the restroom, knocking into Jack and Shannon in his run. In the first-class section of the plane, Charlie manages to find a vacant restroom, where he pulls out a heroin stash from his shoe and begins ingesting it. The attendants eventually catch up with him, knocking on the door repeatedly and calling for him to come out, which forces Charlie to attempt to flush away his stash. Right before he does, however, he is tossed against the ceiling as the flight starts to experience extreme turbulence. He barely escapes the room and manages to crawl through the aisle to an empty seat, where he straps himself in.
Kate
Kate sits next to Edward Mars on the plane, where she turns down a drink offer by a stewardess. The man mocks her while she momentarily reveals her hands, tightly handcuffed together. As the plane starts to experience rocky turbulence, Kate states that she had one favor to ask of her captor, but before she elaborates, passengers begin flying around the aisles as the plane begins to break up. In the midst of the chaos, a briefcase in the overhead compartment flies down, smashing Mars in the head. As he recoils, blood pours down the side of his face. Oxygen masks fall down all around and Kate desperately tries with all her strength to reach them, but fails due to her restraints. Pulling the keys from the man's pocket, she unlocks the handcuffs and places one mask on him and another on herself. With her mask in place, she lies back in panic as the tail of the plane literally rips apart from the mid-section.
Real-time events
Jack, Kate, and Charlie make their way back across the Island, while Jack fiddles with the radio transceiver they acquired from the cockpit of the plane, though to little avail, as the item appears to have been broken in the crash. Meanwhile, Kate asks Charlie what he was doing in the restroom of the plane while she and Jack found the pilot, and Charlie answers that he was showing cowardice like he normally does, vomiting in the restroom. Kate, however, reassures him that he is not a coward. At the beach, Shannon is taking the opportunity to sunbathe, much to Boone's disbelief. Confident that they will all be rescued soon, she is completely uninterested in aiding the rest of the Survivors as they go through the luggage from the crash. Claire, an onlooker to the conversation, asks if the two are romantically involved, learning that they are in fact brother and sister. In exchange for Shannon’s piece of information, Claire chillingly admits that she hasn't felt the baby move since the day before.
Down by the shore, Sun watches Jin as he picks shellfish from between some rocks. She is interrupted by Michael, who is having difficulty keeping tabs on his son, Walt, while on the Island. However, neither man nor wife give a satisfying response due to their apparent inability to speak English, leaving Michael to search elsewhere. However, before he leaves, he notes that Jin shouts at Sun, prompting her to quickly button up her blouse fully. Walt is in fact near the beach, just inside the undergrowth of the trees, himself in search of his dog, Vincent. As he wanders about, he finds only one thing of interest: a set of handcuffs. Michael catches up with Walt at last and is also intrigued by the cuffs.
Not much later, Sayid and Sawyer are engaging in a brawl until Jack arrives back from the jungle to separate them. Apparently, Michael had revealed to the group that he suspected a prisoner was aboard the plane, and Sawyer had immediately assumed the prejudicial view that Sayid, as a Middle Easterner, may have been responsible for crashing the plane. Sayid is livid that his movements on the plane had been observed and noted by Sawyer and that he had the audacity to accuse him. Their shouts are only ceased by Kate, who takes charge of the situation by asking if anyone can fix the broken transceiver. Sayid says that he might be able to help, while Sawyer walks off moodily.
Hurley visits Sayid as he works to fix the transceiver, having also felt the brunt of Sawyer's insults as he attempted to bring peace during the confrontation. He introduces himself, and the two chat about Sayid's past as a military officer and how he fought in the Gulf War. Hurley, however, wrongly assumes Sayid fought for the Americans, learning that he was actually part of the Republican Guard.
Further down the shore, Kate bathes in the water but soon notices Sun behind her, speaking in Korean and pointing up the beach. Kate nods and with a half smile, Sun leaves, clearly in awe of Kate's freedom to remove her layers of clothing and cool down in the heat. Having dried and changed her clothes, Kate approaches Sayid to check on the progress of the transceiver's repair. It appears fixed, but is without any reception, meaning it can't broadcast a message for rescue. However, Sayid explains that there is one way they could acquire a signal: by heading up the mountains for higher ground. Kate then visits Jack, who is still struggling to save the life of the man with the shrapnel injury. She tells him that she is going on a hike with Sayid, despite the fact that they both are aware of what lay waiting in the jungle. Kate is quite adamant, though, that the batteries on the transceiver won't last very long, meaning that her hands are tied.
By the shore, Jin prepares the shellfish he caught to give to the other survivors, though not his own wife. As he leaves her, Sun defiantly undoes the top button on her blouse. Jin proceeds to give out the food, though Hurley laughingly declines. Further up the beach, Michael talks to Walt while he flips through a Spanish comic book. Michael's parenting skills seem to be lacking, however, as he tactlessly says he'll buy Walt a new dog when they get home.
Meanwhile, the rest of the survivors are busy with different tasks. Jack enlists Hurley to search for antibiotics, Charlie hides away to take more heroin, and Boone sits with a crying Shannon after she sees the dead body of the crewman who refused to put her into first class, effectively saving her life. Boone, however, gives her little sympathy, saying she has been useless sitting around staring at the dead. After an argument, she defiantly proclaims that she is going on the hike with Kate and Sayid. Charlie also signs up upon hearing that Shannon is going, as does Boone, grudgingly. Further away, Sawyer reads a letter that's been tucked away in his pocket that seems to trouble him for a moment. He notices Kate and the team heading out in the distance and joins them on their difficult trek up the mountain.
Down at the camp, Michael talks to Jack about the missing dog, and Jack tells him that he had seen a yellow Labrador after the crash in the jungle. Elsewhere, Walt approaches Locke, who teaches him the rules of backgammon while the boy explains that he never actually knew Michael, and is only in his care because his mom got sick and died just a couple of weeks earlier. Locke then ominously asks if Walt wants to know a secret.
Jin continues to offer his fish samples to the survivors, this time to Claire, who reluctantly accepts. Immediately after eating the food, Claire jumps up in emotion, having felt her baby finally kick. She comments that "he kicked", analyzing her own words that she must believe that the baby is a boy.
Kate's team argues about the right time to check the radio and risk completely wasting the battery. However, a roaring in the distance interrupts them, and Kate realizes that it might be the same thing that killed the pilot. As the creature approaches, Kate orders everyone to run, but Sawyer remains behind. In the last few moments, he pulls out a gun and fires almost a full clip. The group returns to discover what Sawyer had shot; it is a polar bear. Kate immediately questions where Sawyer got the gun from, and he reveals that a US Marshal (one of few people who are permitted to carry a gun on a flight, if with a prisoner) was on the plane, and that he took his badge as well. Sayid then suggests that Sawyer was the prisoner all along. Kate manages to take the gun while Sawyer's back is turned. She asks how to use it, causing Sawyer to grin. Sayid instructs her on how to disassemble it. She then gives one part to each man, though Sawyer whispers to her that he "knows her type" as she passes him the ammunition.
At the beach, Hurley helps Jack tend to the shrapnel man, having found some antibiotics from the plane. As Jack removes the foreign object, Hurley faints at the sight of the blood. Then, as Jack stitches up the wound, the pain causes the man to regain consciousness. Appearing disgruntled, he asks, "Where is she?"
As Kate and the group head out, Sayid tries the radio and realizes that there's a conflicting transmission, meaning that there is another signal already broadcasting from nearby on the Island. He manages to tap into a French transmission and Shannon, as the only French speaker, attempts to translate. She hears a distress message from a woman saying, "It killed them, it killed them all." Sayid also calculates, from the counter on the message loop, that the message has been playing for approximately 16 years. The group realizes that if the message is still playing, the call for help was probably never answered. The situation is summed up by Charlie, who asks with a worried stare, "Guys...where are we?"
Trivia
General
- Throughout "Pilot, Part 1" and Part 2 it is only showed what Jack, Charlie, Kate, Rose, Locke, Boone, Shannon, and the marshal were doing on the plane.
- If Sayid's prediction of the French transmission being on a loop for 16 years and 5 months is correct, then the recording was most likely made in April (the 4th month) of 1988.
- J.J. Abrams won an Emmy for directing this episode.
- Abrams, Damon Lindelof, and Jeffrey Lieber also got an Emmy nomination for writing it.
Production notes
- The scene where Sawyer shoots a polar bear became very problematic, as discussed on the Season 1 DVD special "Welcome to Oahu". The original test screening preview of the episode showed a stuffed bear that looked unrealistic when frozen in screen capture (image at right); this was later replaced with a much more realistic CGI animation.
- The French transmission was dubbed in German for the French version of the series.
- This episode was originally supposed to open with the scene involving Shannon and Claire on the beach, however the producers changed this, feeling it should open with the jungle story where the first part of the pilot ended. (Season 1 DVD commentary)
