Name references
- The name Paulo may refer to the apostle Paul, since Paulo is how this apostle is known in Portuguese speaking countries. Paul was not formerly one of the Twelve Disciples and he claimed he was appointed by the resurrected Jesus, and according to Christian faith, anyone who had received a mission from God, or Christ, to man could be called 'Apostle'. By Paul's own admission, he never met Jesus Christ, and was one of the Pharisees (named Saul) during Christ's lifetime.
- This may allude to the fact that Paulo has only appeared later on the show.
- Another possibility is the Brazilian philosopher Paulo Freire (1921-1997) who believed that traditional pedagogy was a tool of the oppressor.
- In the podcasts, Cuse and Lindelof pronounce his name like "Apollo" without the A; he may turn out to have some sort of connection to either the candy bars or the sun.
- Paulo is always pronounced that way. Perhaps the connection (beyond Paulo working as a chef) was that like the candy bar is considered a snack and quickly finished, Paulo was eye candy and his death came soon after he introduced by name.
- This might be a reference to Paulo Coelho, who wrote a book about finding personal fulfillment by pursuing your true purpose. The book is called, "The Alchemist." In that book, a king, who acts as a guide to people pursuing their purpose, gives the main character a white stone and a black stone (Stones).
- From the book: "Take these," said the old man, holding out a white stone and a black stone that had been embedded at the center of the breastplate. "They are called Urim and Thummim. The black signifies 'yes,' and the white 'no.' When you are unable to read the omens, they will help you to do so."
- From the whisper transcripts, one of the whispers in episode 4x1 when Hurley is at Jacob's cabin is: "Come to me, I need you. You're an alchemist and uh..."
Background
- May be Brazilian or a Portuguese speaker, just like the actor.
- Language may be a plot point that ties in with Penelope's Portuguese-speaking researchers at the listening station.
- In "Every Man for Himself", Paulo is wearing an Italian soccer t-shirt. One of the researchers at the listening station seems to be a native Italian speaking Portuguese.
- During the 06 Nov 2006 Official Lost Podcast, talking about which character people expected to die in "The Cost of Living", the following exchange takes place:
| “ |
Carlton: "I thought it was going to be one of those red shirts like the Brazilian Dude? What's his name?" Damon: "Paulo?" Carlton: "Yeah." | ” |
- Holds a certain amount of bitterness towards the 'main' castaways.
- We will find out that he became a mole working secretly for The Others after he found the walkie-talkie in The Pearl ("Exposé").
- In a flashback, it will be shown Paulo was actually a trained actor (that is how he met Nikki) and only pretended to be a chef as part of the con. If he was really a master chef Paulo would have created some dishes for the Losties to eat.
Future on the Island
- Paulo and Nikki will never be mentioned again.
- They will be mentioned again, and The Monster will possibly take the shape of Nikki or Paulo.
- His significance as a character will be revealed as hinted by the fact that he saw the plane and a hatch, amongst other story lines, before the rest of the survivors.
- Sooner or later Sawyer or somebody else will dig up the grave of Paulo and Nikki to retrieve the diamonds. Then it will be seen that at least Nikki, before they died, tried to save herself.
- The Losties will feel kinda guilty that Nikki and Paulo were alive when they buried them.
