Parallel Dimension Theory

A parallel dimension is seperate dimension that may run along the same timeline, as well as sharing many traits and similarities with the current dimension.

Please regard the graph on the right, used to illustrate the following example:

-Desmond belongs in the first dimension and starts out on the first line. Desmond is given a boat by Libby, who also exists in the first dimension. After Desmond gets lost at sea and crashes onto the island, he crosses over dimensions and now exists in the second dimension, or the second line. (view Point A.)

-The fourth dimension is almost identical to the first dimension, with a few variations:

--The Penelope from the first dimension gets concerned when Desmond disappears, and places the researchers at the South pole. After the flash, this worried Penelope sends a boat to search for the island where the magnetic disturbance occurred.
--In the fourth dimension, Desmond is married to Penelope and also works for the Others. This Penelope is the version that talked with Charlie on the video phone. She calls regularly to talk to her Desmond, and she knows about the island.

-Naomi belongs to the first dimension, as was hired by the worried Penelope. After parachuting onto the island, Naomi crosses over into the second dimension. (View Point B.) Naomi explains to the survivors how the plane was found with all the bodies inside. The plane was found in the first dimension, but the survivors are actually from the fifth dimension. In the fifth dimension, the plane was never found.

-Jack and the other plane crash survivors belong in the fifth dimension. There is also another Libby; she is a different person than the Libby that gave Desmond a boat. In the fifth dimension, Christian dies and Jack goes to Austrailia to retrieve his body. The airplane containing all the survivors crashes onto the island, crossing over into the second dimension. (view Point C.)

-(explanation for Point D is unavailable.)

-When Naomi and Jack got the phone working, they accidentally called a ship that exists in the third dimension. When the Oceanic Six eventually get off the island, they cross over into the third dimension. (View Point E.) Christian is not dead in the third dimension, but he is an alcoholic and is also chief of staff.

This theory helps to explain away many problems:

-The confusion that video-phone Penelope felt when Charlie told her about Naomi and the boat that worried Penelope sent.
-Ben's statement that 'the John Locke he knows is different'.
-Juliet's sister was dying of cancer in a dimension, and in a different dimension she was a mother instead.
-Jack's ex-wife was far along in her pregnancy.
-Libby's knowledge of all the people she needs to be travelling on the plane.
-Jack becomes an alcoholic and addicted to prescription drugs because he realized he is in the wrong dimension.

In summary; this theory can solve most of the unexplained questions of the show.

Editor's note: this theory seems obsolete given what was shown in season 4. Most of the confusion was caused by Naomi lying, Jack's post-island hallucinations, or something else.
