The newspaper clipping is an obituary that Jack ripped out of the Los Angeles Times.("Through the Looking Glass"),

The article is about a man from New York who was found dead in Los Angeles. He first notices it on a flight from Sydney to Los Angeles. The man in the article seems to be someone both Kate and Jack know as Kate does not want to go to the funeral.

However, the producers have said (despite what some people have deciphered from the article) that it would be re-written.

Non-Canon alert!
This article/section contains information that was shown or released via an official source such as ARG's, or extended media (video games, books), however it has no canonical merit to the overall Lost mythos.

According to Dark UFO, this was posted over at the Fuselage as a version from someone that they suspect works on the show.

"The body of John Lantham of New York was found shortly after 4 am in the 4300 block of Grand Avenue.

Ted Worden, a doorman at the Tower Lofts complex, heard loud noises coming from the victim's loft.

Concerned for tenants' safety, he entered the loft and found the body hanging from a beam in the living room.

According to Jaime Ortiz, a police spokesman, the incident was deemed a suicide after medical tests. Latham (sic) is survived by one teenage son.

Memorial services will be held at the Hoffs-Drawlar Funeral Home tomorrow evening."

Production Note

  • The physical creation of the article was from Lost's prop department, and although the creators of Lost are aware of HDTV screencapping by fans, the fine print may or may not have been a direct product of the writing department.
    • For an similar example of detail from content from the film crew's props department rather than the writers, see Ho`oulu Lāhui document.
  • The date of the newspaper may also be just an artifact of the prop, and not an indication of the actual "in-universe" show timeline. If so, it would be more likely to be 2005 than 2007.
  • It was said by the producers that the article would be re-written.[source needed]

Trivia

  • 4300 South Grand is a few miles south of Downtown Los Angeles, and slightly south-east of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
  • The Grand Tower apartments are at 255 S. Grand Ave., Los Angeles, CA. The apartments provide short-term housing in the Central Business District of L.A., with close proximity to the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and numerous office buildings. Seems to be the likely location for the death.
  • Where the clipping of the obituary announcement would be in the real LA Times page is an article about a marijuana bust.
  • "Ted", "The Tower", and "beam" are all references to central characters or places in Stephen King's The Dark Tower series of books, and other books that allude to the Dark Tower, such as Hearts in Atlantis.
  • The article that the episode's newspaper prop is based on is from the April 5th, 2007 edition of the Los Angeles Times, which was first reported by the LA Times itself on May 24, 2007. [2]
