Before The Crash

In "Every Man for Himself", Nathan is the man fighting in the prison in Sawyer's flashback.

Had another agenda on the Island.
- Was a member of the DHARMA Initiative.
- Became a sort of vigilante after the first night, went looking for the Others.
Wasn't an Other but was a traitor. Similar to Michael he was convinced to betray his fellow survivors when approached by the Others. This is why Goodwin killed him because his betrayal proved he wasn't a good person.
Was from a different group of people on the Island, maybe one of the "bad guys", as opposed to the "good guys" Ben claims his group to be.
- Was from the same group of people as Naomi.
He isn't dead. It is possible that Goodwin appeared to kill Nathan because they were being watched by a tailie, maybe Cindy. Goodwin prentended to kill Nathan and dragged him away to a clearing where Nathan ran away to an Other camp. Possible motivation would be Ana-Lucia's threat to mutilate him.
