Mystery Tales was a series of comic books published by Atlas Comics (now known as Marvel) from March, 1952 to August, 1957. It ran for 54 issues. Issue 40, cover dated April 1956 with the cover teaser "What was the secret of the mysterious 'HIDDEN LAND!'", was one of Richard's items presented to John Locke as a test. ("Cabin Fever") Ultimately the 5-year-old Locke did not choose the comic book as an item that already belonged to him.

Internet release

In the days following the airing of "Cabin Fever" a blog was set up by a group of Lost fans eager to find out more about the comic and how it could relate to the mythology of the show. On May 15, 2008, they won an eBay auction for the book with a high bid of $405. They then scanned and share the entire contents on their site.

Trivia

  • The HTML source of the first email from Octagon Global Recruiting contains the comment "March has 32 days", which is the title of the last story from Mystery Tales No. 40. The story is about a man who somehow time travels back into the past (one day) to keep a bridge in his town from collapsing.
  • With a cover date of April 1956, the issue would have hit the newstands three months earlier, around January 1956. This is done so that a comic has a longer shelf life. The practice is still followed to this day.
