• Assuming that the character's forename is actually Dante, the name used for the character during the casting process, an anagram of the full name 'Dante Avellino' is 'Naval Deletion'. Perhaps Mr. Avellino is connected to the boat people or the organisation who the freighter people represent (Naval), and in the future Sayid is "deleting" such people for Ben.
• He is not associated with DHARMA or the Widmore company. If he had been involved in any cover up, he would have recognized Sayid as one of the Oceanic 6. Therefore, the reason he was chosen by Ben to be assassinated by Sayid is for some other reason.
• He is part of Widmore and/or the Hanso Group.
• Assuming that his full name is Mr Dante Avellino, it is an anagram of 'la mord valentine'.
• He is involved in the cover-up of Oceanic Flight 815.
• Another anagram is "neonatal devil" - it's possible he's been part of a conspiracy related to the fertility issues on the island.
• He is the economist Sayid was after. The opening flashforward sequence actually takes place after the rest of the flashforwards.
