Mike appears during Locke's flashbacks in "Further Instructions". He and his partner Jan are leaders of a marijuana-growing commune that Locke joins. At first, Mike appears warm and kind. But after Eddie, a hitchhiker brought to the commune by Locke, is revealed to be an undercover officer, he shows a much harsher side. He is ready to leave the commune forever, and when Locke insists he can fix the situation, Mike questions his ability to do so pointedly.
