Part of yet unseen/unknown agency
- He and Richard Alpert are both entities similar to Ms. Hawking, and they are the ones who set the "rules" Ben and Widmore follow;
- Taking into account that the writers don't tend to reveal their game plan for new each story arc until much further down the line, it's likely that Abaddon belongs to an agency that we have yet to meet. Seems too obvious to look at DHARMA, Widmore, Mittelos etc for possible connections. We can derive that the agency possesses impressive financial resources, seeing as it's able to recruit a group such as Naomi's and pay for a freighter, helicopters and equipment.
- This agency could be part of a covert (a phrase that Abaddon uses himself) group of people who are clearing up the mess left behind when humans dabble with time.
- Abaddon could be connected with Ms Hawking, as she is yet another mysterious unexplained character not linked with any group yet - he could be working with her.
- Given that Ms Hawking has some connection to Brother Campbell at Desmond's monastery (as displayed by the photo of her on his desk) this 'agency' could be part of a religious cult.
- This connection (Brother Campbell - Ms Hawking - Abaddon - Naomi) would also explain Naomi arriving on the island with a picture of Desmond and Penny: Ms Hawking has passed info to Abaddon about Desmond being on the island and has supplied a photo of him as to his identity.
- Abaddon is not loyal to Widmore. In the scene where he meets Hurley at Santa Rosa he is seated facing the white pieces of the chessboard. This indicates that he is good. The white chess pieces could also represent the people under Abaddon's command, more specifically Daniel, Charlotte, Miles and Frank. From what we saw in Confirmed Dead these four, unlike the rest of the crew, could have been handpicked by Abaddon himself.
- I agree - it seems episodes in which he appeared were made to have no connection with Widmore. While this may be part of making the whole Widmore thing a secret, I find it very unlikely. He could be a spy working for Ben or perhaps some other organization working against Widmore.
- If he has any connection to Ben, then he would most likely know that the other survivors on the island besides the Oceanic 6 are either alive or dead and thus would not need to ask Hurley about their fates.
- The four people he chose for the freighter are infiltrators in Widmore's group - he does not work with Widmore. He is trying to organize the events that will lead to a certain outcome, hence why he picked those four people and motivated Locke into getting on a walkabout.
- Abaddon is a Hostile, this is why he convinced Locke to go on the walkabout which eventually leads him to the Island and his destiny.
Part of THE MAXWELL GROUP
- the maxwell group is a division of Widmore Industries as we found out in the find 815 alternate reality game. Abaddon was also a clue in the game. the producers have stated that the freighter people were familiar with Widmore which would explain why Naomi has the picture of Desmond and Penelope. Abaddon was given the picture of them by Charles Widmore to cover up why they are really on the island.
- If Ben's accusations about Charles from "The Other Woman" are to be trusted, and he does indeed wish to find and exploit the island, it would make sense for him to have several intermediaries between him and those that he actually hired to do the dirty work so that he can stay (relatively) unconnected with the entire affair. Abaddon is probably one of these intermediaries.
- The captain of the freighter told Desmond and Sayid that the owner of the freighter was Charles Widmore (then implied he knew that Desmond knew Widmore). Naomi and her team, which was put together by Abaddon was on the freighter, this makes Abaddon being some part of Widmore Industries a logical conclusion.
Part of DHARMA
- Assuming that Abaddon is actually not a lawyer for Oceanic (based on Hurley's suspicions and Abaddon not being able to produce a business card or ID), he could be working for the Dharma Initiative. When he asks "Are they still alive?", he could be referring to the Hostiles/Others. He could also be referring to surviving members of the Dharma Initiative. If working for Dharma, he may be there to enlist Hurley (and other members of the Oceanic 6) in helping Dharma reclaim the island.
- This makes sense with the episode Enter 77. When Locke entered 77 on the computer after beating the chess game, he alerted Dharma that the hostiles had taken over. They had no idea, and had thus continued to fund and give pallet drops to Ben because they think that he still represents Dharma. This is why they still have funding. Now that Dharma knows that the hostiles have taken over and that Ben has been playing them, they are coming to stop and punish him.
- He could also be asking about the members of Naomi's team.
- When analyzing his name: Matthew (7 letters) Abaddon (7 letters), it reveals a potential clue. When John Locke was entering "77", he might have have unintentionally been sending out a S.O.S. or unknowingly interacting with DHARMA's internet protocols via DharmaTel, which has been revealed in the cryptic annotations seen on the Blast Door Map and the handbooks (DHARMA manuals).
- Charles Widmore also fits this pattern along with countless other names.
- Matthew Abaddon could be a contact or a "cleaner" should such an event occur as described in Enter 77 (i.e. a Hostile invasion - The Purge, a problem with the Periodic resupply drop or other mainland communication requirements/failures for DHARMA external contact methods).
- The chess board (as previously noted above in "Part of yet unseen/unknown agency") are, in fact, white, leading to the conclusion he is one of the "good guys (see Good and bad people) when he encounters Hurley in The Beginning of the End.
- A third possibility is that he is referring to Hurley's friends, the survivors of Oceanic 815 who Hurley must have left behind (unless they're all dead, that is) without knowing whether they would make it or not. The deal Hurley agreed to, together with Jack and Kate and the other three yet unnamed of the Oceanic 6, may have required Hurley and the other rescued to lie and say that only the six of them survived the crash. This theory would explain Hurley's upset reaction when Abaddon asks him if they are alive.
- I agree that Abaddon is probably part of Dharma, and perhaps the leader. He has utilized Widmore to help him take back the island, with the help of the crew. I think he has known I think there is some type of relationship between him and Richard. Both are opposing forces. Abaddon is trying to utilize the power of the Island and Jacob, and Richard is protecting it.
Who are "They"?
- Abaddon asks Hurley "Are they still alive?"
- From a timeline point of view (or at least from the time frame we are supposedly working with), Abaddon recruits Naomi and her crew to go to the island. Their mission: FIND BENJAMIN LINUS. A photo of Ben is carried by Miles. Naomi and her crew reach the island by boat and then use a helicopter to parachute Naomi onto the island. Once there she calls the boat and calls for her 4 passengers to come to the island. Events happen on the island which results in the Oceanic Six returning to the US - full events unknown at present. Once free from the island Hurley (as an Oceanic Six member) is visited in the institute by Abaddon who asks if "they" are still alive.
- Who are "they"?
- If Benjamin was not one of the Oceanic Six, then it is reasonable to suggest that Abaddon's mission to find Benjamin Linus is still very much active. Hence, he needs to know if he is still alive before he sends out another crew to find the island (and possibly why Jack realizes why the Losties need to get back to the island before Abaddon's crew returns).
- However, Abaddon doesn't say "Is he alive?" he asks "Are they still alive?". In addition to the photo Miles carried of Ben Linus, Naomi also carried a photograph of Desmond.
- Strangely enough, Desmond has never been in the same place as Ben so far - he had fled the Swan when Ben was prisoner there, when he returned to the island Ben was back at the Barracks and when Ben met up with the Losties at the end of last season Desmond was with Charlie in the Looking Glass.
- However, Abaddon doesn't say "Is he alive?" he asks "Are they still alive?". In addition to the photo Miles carried of Ben Linus, Naomi also carried a photograph of Desmond.
- The same people who "Charlie" claims needs Hurley.
- "They" are Miles, Daniel, Frank and Charlotte. He sent a team which never returned, and now wants to know if they are alive.
- "They" are the survivors. Hurley is said that "they" need you, and he talks about returning to the island.
- This would explain why it is Hurley, who is asked whether "they" survived, by both [[Abaddon] and Jack, as he is, thus far, the only member of the Oceanic 6 who originally went with Locke, and would have therefore been around to see whatever may or may not have killed "them". Jack therefore does not know himself, which implies that the other members of the Oceanic 6 would not know either.
- "They" are the Freighter crew who were sent by Widmore. Abaddon works for Widmore.
- "They" are Michael and Walt. They escaped the Island and have been in hiding, and Widmore wants to find them.
The Economist
- Abaddon is the one who Elsa refers to as the Economist.
- He is trying to find the Island's location by coercing information out of the Oceanic 6.
- Ben is trying to prevent Abaddon from finding the Island.
- Ben hired Sayid in order to eliminate Abaddon's alliances, i.e. Elsa and Mr. Avellino.
- Jack, Kate and/or Hurley are also working for/with Ben, swearing them to secrecy.
- This explains why Jack is "sick of lying," and asks if Hurley is "going to tell."
- Judging the tone Abaddon uses when he tells "There are no survivors" to Naomi, he's 'suggesting' Naomi that possible survivors are to be eliminated.
Member of the Hanso Foundation
- The group that Abaddon tasked Naomi with creating includes Daniel Faraday, who, besides having experience with time travel, asks Desmond if he has been exposed to extreme radiation or electromagnetism (which he was, when he detonated the hatch's fail-safe). One of the Hanso Foundation's active projects is the Electromagnetic Research Initiative.
- There seems to be a connection between electromagnetism and time travel. After the detonation of the failsafe, Desmond traveled back in time. When he returned to the island, he gained the ability to catch glimpses of the future.
- My personal theory is that Abaddon and Richard Alpert were both crew members of the Black Rock.
Why does Abbadon tell Naomi that there are no survivors?
- He is instructed by Charles Widmore to do so, Widmore having created the diversion himself, to stop anyone else looking for the Island, even inadvertently. The members of the Kahana only believe this to be Ben because Widmore has told them this, after finding out that there were survivors from the flight.
- The members of the Kahana clearly have objectives other than rescuing the survivors and finding Ben, finding Ben could have been invented only as a cover up.
- Finding Ben is given as an objective to Naomi and her team, however there are many other people on the Kahana. There are also a lot of weapons on the Kahana. Other people from the freighter left (the helicopter disappears) and are attempting to get information about him through his daughter. They shot Rousseau.
Is Jacob?
- Seems to know a lot about many characters' psyches...
Is Walt?
- Knows how Locke gets to the island and continually refers to him as "Mr. Locke"
- Also talks to Locke about miracles, when on the island, Walt was the first person Locke told about his healed paralysis. He referred to it as a miracle.
- In "Cabin Fever" Abaddon warns Locke "When you're ready, Mr. Locke...you'll listen to what I'm saying. And then when you and me run into each other again... you'll owe me one.
- This is an incredible theory. It is less likely than all of the abovementioned ones - which is precisly why it is so intriguing. It would give an entirely different level of context to Abaddon's question to Hurley ("Are they still alive?"). One extremely grey area though, when it comes to this theory woudl be Abaddon's entire conversation with Naomi. What could provoke him to insist that there are no survivors? What would he be assembling a team to go to the island for?
- We already know that Walt has made it off the island alive, and yet is not one of the Oceanic 6, thus it is possible he was forced to change his name/assume a different identity.
- This does not make sense. In Cabin Fever we see Abaddon talking to Locke shortly after the beginning of Locke's paraysis. At this time, Walt would be about six years old. There is no way that a full grown version of Walt could talk to Locke if Walt was only a child at the time. Also, Walt was seen in Michael's flashback in Meet Kevin Johnson, shortly before the Kahana set off. There is no way that Abaddon could have organised the team with Naomi if he was Waly, as Walt was only ten years old at the time, and Abaddon is once again full grown.
- Keep in mind, though, between Walt and Michael's departure in "Live Together, Die Alone", and "Taller Ghost" Walt's appearance in "Through the Looking Glass", only 23 days had passed on the island.
- We know for a fact that time travel plays at least some role in the show. Ben showing up randomly in the desert(the same place as a dead Dharma polar bear) and asking the hotel clerk what year it was. The Orchid station orientation films also give hints to time travel. Also, Desmond's time traveling(both times). So if Abbadon is Walt, since Abbadon exists before Walt even goes to the island then Walt at some point time travels and begins to work for(or infiltrate) Widmore's company/operation.
Misc
- Is a freed or escaped prisoner/slave from the Black Rock.
- His 'eternal youth' is akin to Richard Alperts, allowing him to appear unchanged throughout the various flash-backs/flash-forwards.
