Identity

Marvin Candle is Montand. Both are missing an arm.
He is Radzinsky
- Kelvin told Desmond that Radzinksky made the changes to the Swan Orientation Film and in the two slides Marvin's hair is different, this is because Radzinsky filmed it himself at a different time.
Marvin Candle and Mark Wickmund are twins. (And one of them is a Bad Twin.)
"Dr. Wickmund" is merely a fictitious identity used by Dr. Candle in the Pearl video. This is evident because The Pearl seems to have been an experiment on its inhabitants, based on the fact that the pneumatic tubes simply dropped all the logs into a pile that was exposed to the elements and was never actually collected by the DHARMA Initiative. We've now seen Dr. Candle's image in two different hatches, the first hatch having proven conclusively to have had a legitimate purpose in spite of what Pearl Orientation Video claimed.[1]
- There is a natural association between the words "candle" (Dr. Candle), "wick" (Dr. Wickmund), and "flame" (the The Flame). This could be simply creative writing on the part of the show's creators, or it may indicate that 1) the station was named after the doctor, 2) "Candle" or "Wickmund" could both be aliases given to the doctor based on his association with the station, or 3) the doctor's actual surname is either Candle or Wickmund, and the other is a play on the other name.
- Candle/Wickmund adopted the latter name after being "reborn" into an identity accepted by the island.
The name he gives in the orientation film for station 6, the orchid is fake....he's an actor (who in a ridiculous sequence of events, became a leader in a position of power in either the Dharma Initiative or whatever the hell that boat is holding (AKA Naomi's Boat)
- In the orientation outake video for the orchid, he says "Who cares if I shine? I'm a scientist. I'm not a [cut]"
Each of the three names may indeed be different people in time. In the Orchid video, we see the 15 rabbit appear on the shelf making two of the same rabbit. If this happened to Dr. Marvin Candle, perhaps he has multiple existences of himself at one time and they require separate names to be able to distinguish between them.
Marvin Candle, Mark Wickmund, and Edgar Halliwax are simply multiples (triplets or higher) who resulted from fertility experimentation on the island.
- Why would the triplets all have roles as presenters of orientation films, why would two of them have prosthetic arms, and why would they all have different, but similar, surnames?
Benjamin Linus is fond of witty aliases (Henry Gale, Dean Moriarty) and either encouraged Marvin Candle to create alternative names, or came up with them himself.
- Ben didn't come up with Henry Gale
  - Or Dean Moriarty, for that matter.

Arm

The prosthetic arm was just a dramatic device to lend credence to the "incident" and further the urgency of pushing the button at the Swan.
The Pearl Orientation Video was recorded *BEFORE* The Swan Orientation Film, meaning he lost the arm in some sort of incident. (The Pearl video was dated 1981, and the map on the Swan's blast door indicated something happened on October 28, 1985.) However, the copyright date of The Swan film is 1980.
The experiments at The Orchid caused him to lose his arm. Something was going on there that was very dangerous, as Dr. Halliwax seemed very distressed that the two rabbits would possibly come in contact with each other.
- When Ben "arrives" in the Tunisian Sahara, he has a gash on his arm, suggesting that arm injuries have something to do with the mechanism of travel/time-travel developed in The Orchid.

Misc.

Any DHARMA member who saw two different orientation films would notice the change in his alias. So DHARMA personnel were not meant to see more than one of these films in their lifetime. It is known the Pearl was never meant to encounter the Swan due to the one observing the other and sending their records perpetually into an empty field.
He is associated with Naomi and is trying to find the island once more to destroy the Hostiles and the remains of the Swan.
The glass eye may belong to him, as on the Orientation videos, some fans have theorised that he may have a lazy eye.
The 'work' being done in the Swan and recorded in the Pearl was something other than pressing the button (seeing as something happened in 1985).
If the people who are to push the button are being monitored for an experiment, Wickmund might be posing as a character called Marvin Candle to give the people good reason to push the button.
Dr. Candle was recruited or assimilated by The Others after the demise of the DHARMA Initiative.[2]
- Candle appeared on an orientation film when Ben was a child and before the DHARMA massacre, so he would have had to have been a covert agent for The Others for a very long time.
there are two or more marvin candles (Mark Wickmund, and Edgar Halliwax). we know from the latest orientation vid that the orchid was studying the casimir effect which deals with Doppelgängers. that explains why sometimes he has a prosthetic arm (in an earlier vid like the swan which was station three) and others he doesnt (like in a later vid as in the orchid, station six).
Marvin Candle could have been initially part of Rousseau's team. François Chau, who plays Candle, does speak fluent French, and his character supposedly lost an arm (as did Montand).
- However, the Orientation videos were copyright 1980, which is about 8 years before Rousseau arrived on the island.
  - Dr. Candle is an Other, and it was his job to bring Danielle's team to the Island.
Candle has gray hair and looks in his mid-50s while Wickmund has black hair and looks in his late 30s, so Wickmund is a different person because his video was the newest since it was recorded on VCR and if it is Candle he is supposed to be older not younger. However, maybe the island is granting him immortality.
- Wickmund is Candle's son
Candle, Wick, Wax-Look my theory is this...the Flame may be destroyed, but the candle (Wick and Wax AKA the Candle) lives on in what will be revealed as the biggest surprise on the show ever......either some of the flame or an even lower basement survived the explosion....or he is in one of the two remaining hatches (I just can't belive that he's on the boat.....it's too easy....(almost as easy as it would have been for Cruse and lindelof to say that "look, Dharma's on that boat!") Those two remaining hatches are the orchid (which is not FAKE!) or the unamed meteoroligcal hatch (unless theat specific hatch is the Orchid)
- Candle will be the main villain of the remaining seasons.
