• The season 1 author witnessed the release of electromagnetic energy in the ocean and dismissed it as a whale.
• The whale steam discharge is an underwater hatch that may appear on the blast door map.
• The "whale" was the Security System and the sound of air releasing could have been a hatch opening, or the sounds the security system makes
• The "whale" is a submarine used to transport the Others from the Hydra Station to the main island. Ben references the sub at the beginning of the episode entitled "Every Man for Himself" when he's speaking to Juliet in front of Jack.
