Theories may be removed if ...
  1. Stated as questions or possibilities (avoid question marks, "Maybe", "I think", etc).
  2. More appropriate for another article.
  3. Illogical or previously disproven.
  4. Proven by canon source, and moved to main article.
  5. Speculative and lacking any evidence to support arguments.
  6. Responding to another theory (use discussion page instead).
  • This does not include responses that can stand alone as its own theory.
  • Usage of an indented bullet does not imply the statement is a response.

See the Lostpedia theory policy for more details.

  • He wants to be punished for Duckett's murder, but also doesn't want to tell anyone what he's done. So he acts like a jerk to get everyone to hate him. Before the crash, he was clearly comfortable being a con man, and easy to like, as con men have to be.
  • All of the movie references around Sawyer (the Pulp Fiction injection, being tossed into his cage Planet of the Apes style, the Star Wars Wookie prisoner trick, and the Clockwork Orange brainwashing), as well as his nicknames, are manifestations of Sawyer's subconscious. Obvious movie references only happen when Sawyer is involved.
  • Gordy may have payed off Kilo after the David'Jessica con and then Sawyer pulled the long con for him. that's why he owed him.
  • The short time he spent in Room 23 affected him somehow. Since he's been back with the losties he hasn't been as edgy and even more forgiving. He also threw the diamonds in Nikki and Paulo's grave, something that the old Sawyer wouldn't have done.
  • Sawyer once served in the armed forces. He once used the term "klicks" to describe a distance on the Island as well as say "sweep the perimeter". Hurley responds to each statement with confusion on to how he knows those terms. Sawyer also possesses a great amount of combat training and knowledge of martial arts. He was able to size up and subdue a number of others on the Hydra island relatively quick. Sawyer fought in the Gulf War, against Sayid's unit.
  • Sawyer has got Kate pregnant.
    • Kate claims she isn't pregnant.
      • She could be lying to see his reaction.
      • Besides, how would she know that she isn't pregnant?
        • She could have gotten her period.
          • Kate could be the mother to Sawyer's daughter Clementine
  • Sawyer claims to have dropped out of school in 9th grade, but in "The Brig," Locke lists "high school transcripts" as being among the items in Sawyer's file. Sawyer has a high school diploma, but wants Jack to believe that he is uneducated.
    • A transcript doesn't necessarily mean that he graduated from high school; he would have still had a permanent record regardless of whether he dropped out or not.
  • There is something significant about Sawyer's feet. There have been two seemingly meaningless sequences that involved his feet: 1)Sawyer got a dart from the Hatch stuck in his foot on the way back from Hydra Island, and 2) Sawyer experiences pain as he walks barefoot through the jungle with Locke to the Black Rock. These two events had absolutely no bearing on the episode at the time, but they were included anyway.
    • Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn rarely wore shoes.
    • The dart was there to show a development in his relationship and his feet hurt with Locke because he had been found by Locke during the night. I'm not sure what the significance is or could be.
  • Following the events in "The Brig", Sawyer's storyline is resolved. He's taken his revenge on the original Sawyer, found someone he cares about in Kate, and has become nicer to the other losties since the threat of banishment in "One of Us". Therefore, Sawyer will die soon.
    • More evidence pointing to Sawyer's impending death: In The Brig, Sawyer walks barefoot to confront Anthony Cooper, the man who inspired James Ford to become a cynical loner and a con artist; in essence Sawyer was going to "Meet his Maker" an expression signifying death. Also the act of walking barefoot to the Black Rock might be symbolic of a funeral procession, as corpses are generally buried barefoot and one interpretation of the Black Rock could be a tomb or graveyard.
  • Sawyer and Anthony Cooper both call Ben "bug eyed". Both are con-artists with an eye for the ladies and a swagger coupled with humor. They are more linked than we know, possibly the same person?
    • No way! Anthony Cooper could be his father because of their age difference, and lets not forget that Sawyer killed Anthony Cooper so it can not be the same person.
      • The island does seem to have a time frame that is out of sync with the outside world. Perhaps this time shift allowed such a paradox to occur. Sawyer leaves the island and grows to be Anthony Cooper, but when Anthony Cooper is brought to the island, the time paradox means the early Sawyer hasn't left yet. It's a loop.
        • Anthony Cooper has no idea where he is when he talks to Sawyer. If he was Sawyer, wouldn't he have known where he was? Though I suppose it could also be said that he thought he was in hell because he was back on the island and facing his old self. However, this also makes no sense because he doesn't recognize Sawyer's letter, which he would have if he had written it. Also, he guessed at what he had done to Sawyer in the past. If he was Sawyer, then he would have known exactly what the letter was about and probably wouldn't have been taunting his past self about it.
  • Mr. Ford isn't Sawyer's real father. It will turn out that Hibbs or possibly Anthony is his actual father.
  • Sawyer has changed after killing Anthony; He will eventually abandon his pseudonym because he is no longer "Sawyer".
  • Locke's actions will result in Sawyer's death, further fueling Kate's hatred of Locke.
  • Sawyer sided with Locke out of gratefulness for enabling him to kill Anthony.
    • Sawyer's position in The Economist that he has "nothing to go back to" refers, at least in part, to the fact that his life's quest of killing the man who ruined his childhood has been completed. He built his whole identity on this vendetta, but now wants to start a new life.
  • Sawyer will eventually side against Locke, either becoming leader of his own faction or being killed by Locke.
  • Sawyer will tell Kate he loves her but stay on the island to save her or so she can leave the island. This being why she is doing favours for him. (also because she truely loves Sawyer.) Sawyer will also tell her to be with Jack when she gets back.
  • Before jumping out of the helicopter, Sawyer told Kate: "I have a daughter in Albuquerque, you need to find her, tell her I'm sorry".
  • Sawyer left the Island when Locke did, and killed him for trying to convince the Oceanic 6 to return.
  • With Jack, Kate, and Sayid gone, and Locke joining the Others, Sawyer will become leader of the remaining survivors at the camp.
  • Sawyer has a connection to locke almost similar to the connection between Claire and Jack, this is through parents/parent relations. This may have some significance.
  • Sawyer has a special connection with Aaron, this is shown by the use of Sawyers voice to stop his crying.
