First time tips

IRC is an asynchronous medium. Don't expect a conversation immediately, it's much like Instant Messaging (IM). In other words if someone happens to be monitoring the chat, you'll have a conversation immediately. But this is rarely the case, most (if not all) of the 50+ users on the channel are away for sure. Don't let that stop you from posing your question or sharing your thoughts! If you're patient you'll most likely get a response later. you can use the channel statistics for an activity chart.

Using colors

The use of colors have been disabled in the Lostpedia chat. This is because there is no default background color for an IRC client, and a message of a certain color might become hard to read for users with a similar background color.

Connecting to chat

Every IRC client has an input line which is used to type messages, and run simple IRC-related commands. such commands are used to connect to the chat and join channels. the following lists how to use these commands.

  • Type /server irc.gamesurge.net to connect to the GameSurge IRC server with the address irc.gamesurge.net
  • Type /join #lostpedia to join the channel #lostpedia
  • Type /nick lostfan to change your nickname to lostfan (for example)

Connecting with a Java client

Connecting to our chat room with a Java IRC client is the easiest method, since there is no need for installation. it is highly recommended to install a dedicated IRC client (see below) for better functionality.

Keep in mind that by default, most browsers have a limit on how many active connections they can have open. This may cause you to randomly disconnect from a Java IRC client. Firefox users can read this forum post to see how to increase their limit.

Connecting with an IRC client

For help setting up XChat see our step-by-step guide.

For frequent users or for better advanced functionality, use a dedicated IRC program (called a client). The following is a list of popular IRC clients.

Connecting with ChatZilla

For help setting up ChatZilla see our step-by-step guide.

Firefox users may install the ChatZilla addon, a free IRC client extension.
