In a place as filled with as many hidden traps, dangerous beasts and hostile enemies as the Island, there are bound to be some cuts and bruises. This page documents significant injuries and illnesses occuring both off and on the island.
Due to the island's healing properties, injuries that would normally take months to heal (such as gunshot wounds or broken limbs) can be mended in a matter of weeks. However, this effect can be erratic and unreliable, healing some wounds at random and others not at all; see healing properties for more information.
Fatal injuries are marked in bold. Note that this list is by no means exhaustive.
Before the island
Ana Lucia
- Shot four times in the chest by Jason McCormack, resulting in a miscarriage ("Collision")
John Locke
- Broken spine resulting in paralysis, after being pushed out an eighth floor window by his father ("The Man from Tallahassee")
Libby
- Broke her leg while skiing in Vermont ("The Other 48 Days")
- Suffered from an unknown mental problem resulting in institutionalisation at Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute("Dave")
Michael Dawson
- Severely injured after being hit by a car ("Special")
Rachel Carlson
- Unspecified cancer, resulting in sterility due to chemotherapy ("Not in Portland")
Sarah Shephard
- Severe injuries resulting from a car accident, including a broken spine and ruptured spleen ("Man of Science, Man of Faith")
On the island
Aaron Littleton
- Briefly suffered from either roseola or the mysterious "sickness" ("Maternity Leave")
Ana Lucia
- Fatally shot in the chest by Michael ("Two for the Road")
Ben Linus
- Spinal tumour discovered on his L4 vertebrate, later safely removed by Jack ("One of Us")
- Shot through the shoulder with a crossbow bolt by Danielle ("One of Them")
- Tortured via unknown means by Sayid ("One of Them")
- Had his kidney sac purposefully sliced open (and later repaired) during surgery by Jack ("I Do")
- Punched and beaten by Jack after pretending to kill Sayid, Jin and Bernard ("Through the Looking Glass")
- Punched by Danielle after referring to Alex as his daughter ("The Beginning of the End")
- Punched and beaten by Sawyer after mocking him with regards to Kate and Jack ("Confirmed Dead")
Boone Carlyle

- Fatally injured from falling inside the drug smugglers plane ("Do No Harm")
Charlie Pace
- Facial injuries received in crash, resulting in permanent scars("Pilot, Part 1")
- Underwent heroin withdrawal ("The Moth")
- Hung by the neck by Ethan, resulting in near death ("All The Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues")
- Head wound from one of Danielle's traps, cauterized by Sayid ("Born to Run")
- Repeatedly punched in the head by Locke ("Fire + Water")
- Repeatedly beaten as torture by Greta and Bonnie ("Greatest Hits")
- Drowned after Mikhail ruptured a porthole in the Looking Glass ("Through the Looking Glass")
Claire Littleton
- Collapses of dehydration due to low water supplies ("White Rabbit")
- Suffered from nightmares so severe that her fingernails cut her palm when she clenched her fists ("Raised by Another")
- Minor cuts and bruises from being caught in a house explosion ("The Shape of Things to Come")
Desmond Hume
- Hit on the head with a rifle butt by Kate ("Orientation")
- Knocked unconsicous with a blow to the head with an oar by Charlie ("Greatest Hits")
Donald
- Broken leg from plane crash, which later became infected and killed him ("The Other 48 Days")
Edward Mars
- Chest wound from shrapnel received in plane crash ("Pilot, Part 1")
- Gunshot wound to lung by Sawyer in a failed euthenasia attempt ("Tabula Rasa")
- Successfully euthenised by Jack, method unknown ("Tabula Rasa")
Eko
- Badly injured during the Discharge ("Further Instructions")
- Mauled and beaten to death by the Monster ("The Cost of Living")
Ethan Rom
- Minor wounds received in a punch-up with Jack ("All The Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues")
- Fatally shot in the chest by Charlie ("Homecoming")
Goodwin
- Receives a chemical burn on his hand while working at the Tempest ("The Other Woman")
- Impaled on a wooden stake by Ana-Lucia ("The Other 48 Days")
Hurley
- Shot with a taser dart by the Others ("Live Together, Die Alone")
- We never got confirmation that he was shot.
Jack Shephard
- Deep laceration to the back, requiring stitches with Kate's assistance ("Man of Science, Man of Faith")
- Dislocated his shoulder during the cave-in ("The Moth")
- Minor wounds from a fist fight with Ethan ("Homecoming")
- Shot with a taser dart by the Others ("Live Together, Die Alone")
- Knocked unconscious by Juliet ("A Tale of Two Cities")
Jin Kwon
- Damage to his wrist from wearing a broken handcuff for several weeks ("House of the Rising Sun") ("What Kate Did")
- Knocked unconscious by a rock thrown by Ethan ("Homecoming")
- Minor burns to his hands while trying to douse the burning raft ("...In Translation")
- Knocked unconscious by Eko ("Orientation")
John Locke
- Slashed across his right eye by plane wreckage during the crash, resulting in a permanent scar ("Pilot, Part 1")
- Hit in the leg by shrapnel from his trebuchet, temporarily losing his ability to walk (though this may have been unrelated) ("Deus Ex Machina")
- Minor injuries from a physical beating by Jack after Boone's death ("The Greater Good")
- Cuts his hands while lowering Kate into the hatch ("Man of Science, Man of Faith")
- Leg broken and impaled when trapped by a blast door during a lockdown in the Swan ("Lockdown")
- Shot through the stomach by Ben ("The Man Behind the Curtain")
Kate Austen
- Shot with a taser dart by the Others ("Live Together, Die Alone")
Leslie Arzt
- Killed in a dynamite explosion caused by his own mishandling ("Born to Run")
