Naomi's helicopter, general
- The sound was the helicopter used for Periodic Resupply Drop (P.R.D.), as seen in the Sri Lanka Video.
- Every time a helicopter is shown in a TV show, the sound used is that for a Bell UH-1 Huey, regardless of whether the chopper is a Huey or not. Therefore it is probably unwise to deduce the model of the helicopter only from this commonly-used movie sound.
- The "freighter" from which Naomi claims the helicopter launched is actually the Hanso medical supply ship, the Helgus Antonius.
- We see two pads on the freighter, but only one helicopter on it.
Naomi's helicopter crash
Cause
- The helicopter crashed because of the electromagnetic disturbance created by electromagnetic pulse of the discharge. Since the other electronics and communication equipment, such as those in the Flame, stopped working because of the discharge, it is reasonable to conclude that the equipment in the helicopter failed as well as it neared the Island
- The helicopter crashed due to being hit by lightning during the storm, as seen in "Confirmed Dead"
- The Swan was used to limit the amount of radiation that was emitted, and the electromagnetic pulse could have been a product of the sudden release on that control. The Island could still be oozing enough electromagnetic radiation to have caused the helicopter to crash.
- There have been many crashes on the Island: Oceanic Flight 815, the Beechcraft, Rousseau's science expedition, Henry Gale's balloon - and possibly even the Black Rock. In "One of Us" it was stated that the journey to The Island is "pretty intense" -- possibly arriving underwater via the submarine is the best way to avoid or dampen this effect.
- The helicopter was brought down by The Others' air defense.
- By EMP emitters.
- The splash seen by the group was not the helicopter crashing (no helicopter was seen), but rather an explosive/missile launched from the Looking Glass: the location of the splash seen corresponds to the location of the Looking Glass, as we have specifically been shown the cable, and no wreckage was seen when Charlie dove in this exact spot later.
- We only see limited views and any coral reef ridge could hide the wreckage from site.
- The sound when they are around the helicopter in "The Beginning of the End" sounds like a metal distortion flex more similar to the smoke monster than a flex in a router blade or wind blowing through the helicopter. The blades weren't shaking enough to make sound like a thunder sheet (flexible piece of metal shaken as a sound effect for plays)
- The skids (metal landing gear) of the helicopter have some shock absorbing springs. Changing weight, such as Sayid leaning in/on to it or wind pressure caused it to rock up and down like shocks on a car
- The helicopter that is heard by the group is actually the same helicopter crash of the Oceanic 6 in the season finale. Time is distorted between events on and off the Island, such as the Doctor washing up on the shore before he is killed off the Island "The Shape of Things to Come". Also, there is no mention of there being another helicopter or another pilot by Frank Lapidus or the freighter people.
Telling the truth about the crash and her motives
- She knew about Penny and Desmond
- She must not be in league with the Others because Mikhail seems not to know her and Ben and Mikhail seem to take her story seriously and to be worried about it.
- She has nothing to gain by pretending to have crashed her helicopter.
- The parachute did not open fully. She could have jumped out of the helicopter and been saved by the tree. That type of chute malfunction is refereed to as a streamer
- Sayid appears to believe her after she gives him the satellite phone.
Lying about the crash and her motives
- Sayid does not trust her, and Sayid is usually right.
- The survivors never see the helicopter or the parachute.
- She would not be searching at night
- Night vision goggles or instruments would make it easy to identif land mass against the ocean, even in dim night light. Any illumination of fire, torch and/or the stations would show up against a dark backdrop.
- A parachute would not be effective at low altitude and the helicopter would have to be at low altitude for Desmond and his group to hear it.
- Sound carries especially well when there are none of the noises of civilization to cancel it out. A waterfall and/or rain could drown it out, but otherwise it would be out of place enough that it would be easily detectable. Military helicopters in good repair are more quiet than helicopters used by civilians which are not subject to maintenance as often. Any damage to the blades would create out of pitch harmonics in addition to lower air dynamic qualities.
- Parachutes can be deployed at low attitudes. For example, base jumping.
- Naomi would not need to wear a high altitude oxygen mask to jump out of a helicopter at low altitude.
- If the Island has some sort of barrier around it, the air in that area might not be breathable.
- At that low altitude she would have fallen straight down in the ocean, not on the Island.
- You can track and move through the air as soon as you start falling downward. With the parachute, she would be falling slowly enough to control her landing.
- Ben deceived the crash survivors by pretending to be trapped in a tree. She could be doing the same thing.
- Getting caught in a tree is common risk. That's why all jump schools have big open landing fields, such as an airport. There are no landing zones on the Island that we know of. Jumping out of a malfunctioning aircraft does not afford one the choice of where they are going to land. Wind and disorientation could also make it easy to miss the beach. Water landings are dangerous and risky in their own right.
- Her statement that the the passengers of Flight 815 are all dead intentionally causes despair and confusion.
- Naomi honestly believed that were no survivors of Flight 815.
- Cooper reiterates this outside perception of Flight 815 without knowing of Naomi.
- Mikhail mistranslates her statement, "I am not alone" because it was a message intended only for him.
If they were expecting resistance and taking guns, why wasn't the helicopter outfited with a M60/240 or M134/GAU-2 Gatling type mini gun?
