Both the Others and the Survivors have used restraints several times since the crash in prisoner and hostage situations. At their most primitive, these restraints are made of rope. But when available, handcuffs are often used.

When rope is used
Michael with his hands tied.
- Locke tied up Boone before spreading a hallucinogenic drug on Boone. ("Hearts and Minds")
- Sawyer was tortured by Sayid over the whereabouts of Shannon's asthma medication. ("Confidence Man")
- Ana Lucia ties up Sayid after he tries to attack her for killing Shannon. ("Collision")
- Ben was tortured by Sayid who wanted to know his true identity. ("One of Them")
- Michael was captured by the Others and restrained in several instances. ("Three Minutes")
- The Others tied rope around Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley's hands at the Pala Ferry. ("Live Together, Die Alone")
- Charlie is tied up by rope.
- Ben is tied after being captured.
When handcuffs are used
- Kate was handcuffed on the plane with the marshall. ("Tabula Rasa")
- After Jin attacked Michael, Sayid and Sawyer handcuffed him to a large part of plane debris. Michael later freed him, but Jin was forced to wear one half of the handcuffs until Locke cut them off with bolt cutters. ("House of the Rising Sun") ("What Kate Did")
- Ben made Kate put on a pair of handcuffs while having breakfast with him. ("A Tale of Two Cities")
- Juliet handcuffed herself to Kate in order to gain her trust. ("Left Behind")
- Frank was handcuffed to the helicopter by Keamy until Sawyer freed him with a hacksaw. ("There's No Place Like Home, Part 1") ("There's No Place Like Home, Parts 2 & 3")
When other means are used
- Locke used Cable to scale down The Swan. ("Man of Science, Man of Faith")
- Ethan restrained Juliet with what appears to be Velcro Straps on the journey to the Island. ("One of Us")
When unknown restraints are used
- Danielle used an unknown restraint (could be Rope, Cable or Wire) against Sayid, believing him to be an Other. ("Solitary")
- When The Others were conning Sawyer, they had him tied down to an operating table. They appeared to be using Rope, but it is not clearly seen. ("Every Man for Himself")
