Foreshadowing is a literary device in which an writer drops subtle hints about plot developments to come later in the story. In Lost this device is widely used, leading to a long list of unanswered questions. The additional literary technique of a flashforward on Lost is similar to that of foreshadowing, but addresses the mystery in from a different perspective, again cluing at what is to come in the gap between events.
