Aaron
Why Jack won't see Aaron
- Because Claire died/was left behind on the island
- Jack feels guilty because he caused Claire's death, leaving Aaron an orphan.
- Jack feels guilty because he has a hand in Claire's death, but it happens on island. We don't see that particular flash of Desmond's because it would giveaway that he actually sees Claire "getting on a helicopter" in a bodybag. Naomi's inclusion on the helicopter is a foreshadow of Claire's fate.
- Jack doesn't want to see Aaron because of the guilt he feels for leaving Claire and the other Losties on the island. This guilt continues to build up regardless of not seeing Aaron which leads to his drug addiction, suicide attempt and obsession with getting back to the island. What Jack doesn't know is Aaron is the key to getting back to the island. Jack must face his guilt (Aaron) head on before being allowed back to the island.
- Because of another reason
- Jack can't look at Aaron because at some point he is made aware that he is Aaron's Uncle - seeing the child reminds Jack of his father's affair with Claire's mother.
- Jack is afraid of repeating the fate of his father by not being a good dad.
Why Kate won't allow her mother to see her son
- Because Kate is unable to relate to other people. All she ever wanted from her mother is her to approve of Kate's murder of her father. She has no other emotional attachment to her mother.
- Because she will know (by intuition or other means) that this is not Kate's biological child.
- Because Kate feels that her mother is blackmailing her by only agreeing to not testify against her in exchange for getting to see Aaron. Kate is still mad at her mother, and does not want to give into her, nor give her the satisfaction of seeing her grandson. Kate is acting out of spite.
- Kate's mother was not a positive influence in Kate's life. She stayed with an abusive husband who leered at Kate, then essentially chose that husband over Kate by turning her in. Kate does not want Aaron exposed to someone she feels has betrayed her repeatedly.
Daniel and Charlotte
Why Charlotte was testing Daniel with the cards
- Memory
- Daniel has memory problems -- it was revealed in the enhanced version of "Confirmed Dead" that the woman with Daniel in that episode was his "caretaker" and not his wife -- which might be early onset Alzheimer's or something similar. This is the reason he cries when he sees the plane wreckage but doesn't know why; his mental faculties are diminished. These memory issues could be solved by the island's magical and mysterious properties. Charlotte's use of the term "remember" makes sense for a memory test, but not for a test of potential psychic abilities.
- Daniel is a savant. Hanso was doing memory research with savants (see Mental Health Appeal). Daniel was seen with a caretaker in a previous episode flashback, his speech patterns are strange, as if he is trying to speak faster than he can think and he comes across as a bit addle-minded (confused) at times. Yet his skills as a scientist are very acute, which is very typical of a savant. He has a connection to the Mental Health Appeal studies and that is why he was picked for this team sent to the island. Charlotte was testing if his memory was improving.
- Psychic
- Charlotte was testing Daniel for psychic or mind-reading abilities.
- Daniel had psychic abilities which waned. The abilities are coming back; "there is some progress" now that he's on the island.
- Time Travel
- Daniel is like Desmond and Ms. Hawking and he went through this time loop before. He is trying to remember the cards from the last time he lived through that moment.
- If time travel is the case, when Charlotte tells Dan that 2 out of 3 is "progress" this may imply that they have lived this more than once and Dan's memory is improving but not as much or as fast as he would like it to.
- According to the events in The Constant, Daniel tries to figure out if his brain still works fine after arriving on the island with the helicopter.
Miles and Ben
- Miles asking Ben for $3.2 million is a coded message that Miles was tasked with passing on to Ben. Ben and Miles pretented to be negotiating an extortion amount because of Kate's presence; this also explains Miles' initially requesting privacy.
- 3.2 million is equal to 3,200,000. Or, 3 then 2 then 5 zeros. Ben told Michael (at the end of Season 2) in order to leave the island, Michael must remain exactly at 325 degrees.
- The "negotiation" about the timing of the payment (two days versus a week) was also a coded discussion about when an event (which viewers are not yet aware of) will occur.
- Miles may have relayed additional information to Ben -- after Ben accuses Miles of blackmail, Miles lips move for a couple of seconds before he starts to speak. Miles is facing Ben with his back to Kate.
- Miles really is just in it for the money. Like Juliet in Season 3, Miles is a character motivated purely by his own goals, and is not allied with any of the ideological forces (Ben, Abaddon, etc.) surrounding the island. The freighties will pay him for going if he finds Ben or not and he already said it was a ton of money.
- Miles knows all about Ben and he requested 3.2 million because he knows that is how much money Ben has in cash.
The Helicopter
- Because time is different on the island from the real world, the helicopter seems to have vanished.
- When Desmond tried to leave the island, he sailed around in circles for weeks, because he had no idea of any special bearing he was supposed to follow. If Frank turns from the correct bearing, he will end up flying around in circles until he ends up back on the Island. The reason the helicopter hasn't arrived is because it's still in the Snowglobe.
- This isn't likely because the helicopter was very low on fuel. If they were to have been circling around, they probably would've had a nice crash landing in the water.
- The same effect that caused the rocket to be delayed by ~31 minutes could also cause the helicopter to take longer to get back. The heading appears to be critical to pass through the specific spot toget to/from the Island (referred to as the event horizon in the diagram to the right) This points towards an anomaly w/ a specific point in space, like a wormhole, vrs. a bubble or "snow globe" effect which is 360 degrees around the Island. From the next episode's trailer, it looks as if there's a storm where the event horizon is located which obviously scares Sayid & Desmond. It's hard to tell if they continue through or it made them turn around. There's a brief shot that looks like Desmond attacking Daniel and shouting "I could have been killed!", which would indicate they turned around. They may have crossed the event horizon, got freaked out, then turned back. This could cause them to "lose time" as they were briefly across the event horizon and subjected to the time dilation effects.
Time Anomalies
- Many of the most influential themes have something to do with time distortion and time travelers like Desmond who seems to be trapped in some kind of time loop. When Desmond meets Mrs. Hawking, she knew events that were going to happen just like him. There are probably more time travellers besides Desmond and Mrs. Hawking. Maybe Ben is a time traveller and that's why Miles says "don't talk to me like you talk to them" "I know what you can do"; Maybe the way he plans to get his money involves in some way this ability.
- Regarding the book Locke gave Ben entitled "Valis" (a story in which an ancient, mechanical intelligence orbiting the earth has been guiding people’s thoughts), Locke instructs him that he "might catch something you missed the first time around." This is an allusion, on the part of the writers, that Ben does experience "time looping" and HAS lived through island events before, perhaps explaining why he always seems one step in front of everybody.
