Daniel's machine is a device created by physics Professor Daniel Faraday. It was first seen in the episode The Constant. It's part of an unauthorized experiment at Queens College, Oxford involving time travel.

The device
The device looks like a large overhead lamp. It emits a bright violet beam, similar to the light seen during the discharge. According to Daniel Faraday, it can "unstick" a consciousness within time so that it can travel to different points within a persons life, such as the past or the future. The device only works when it is set at 2.342 and oscilating at 11 hertz.
Side effects
The effects of 'unsticking' a living being's consciousness increases exponentially (at least in Desmond's and Minkowski's case). The more the affected person's conscience travels in time, the shorter these episodes are. Soon, a living beings mind will 'short circuit' due to the confusion of time travel, resulting in a brain aneurysm.
Constants
According to Daniel, in order for a person to cope with the confusion of time travel, and stop the episodes, they need to find a 'constant'. A constant is a person, or an object, who can be found in both the present time and the time the person is traveling to. Once a person finds their constant, events in both times will 'course-correct'. It is implied that a person must care deeply for their constant, presumably because the effect of finding a constant the person is unfamiliar with may increase confusion.
'Unstuck' living beings
- Eloise - Daniel's lab rat, subject of his radiation experiment.
- Desmond Hume - Became unstuck after leaving the Island on a bearing that deviated from Daniel Faraday's recommended course.
- George Minkowski - Became unstuck after traveling too close to the Island.
- Brandon - Started to "act weird" when he came too close to the Island. Unknown what happened to him or how he died, but is suspected that he suffered the same fate as Minkowski.
