DHARMA workman (theory)

Outline

When the island was set up, there were two types of personnel sent to the island: Scientists and Workers. The scientists were responsible for the scientific work, and the workers were responsible for the upkeep of the stations and any random work that needed doing. However, the DHARMA scientists kept the work force in the dark as to the nature of their experiments, and the fact that the work force had a secondary role as test subjects. The work force rebelled against the DHARMA scientists as they started to suspect that they were being used -- this led to the DHARMA scientists' attempt to purge the work force. The work force is now known as the "Others", though not all of the work force joined the Others' group; some were left unknowing in their stations (such as the Swan).

Pros

  • Explains the Others' lack of knowledge as to many aspects of the islands
  • Explains why the Swan members never received proper replacements
  • Explains why Roger had "Workman" on his uniform
  • Explains why the Blast Door map is full of information pieced together from reconnaissance
  • Explains why many of the stations have very basic instructions on their purpose: No scientific researcher is going to conduct any research in most of the hatches, the workmen were suppose to keep the stations alive while the scientists went about their work on other sectors of the island.
  • The Stations are full of cameras (even the living quarters); the scientists were observing their test subjects.
  • Explains why many of the stations are so poorly equiped for scientific research -- they were designed for the workers.

Cons

  • Doesn't explain the paranormal aspects of the island
  • If the Others are "janitors", they probably wouldn't have the power and the means off the island to recruit Juliet, etc.
    • It's possible that a few of the scientists joined the workman force and helped them by recruiting other people on to the island and showing them where other stations are.
      • Alternatively, the information was beaten out of them.
  • Why was Roger, a Workman, killed if the Others are the remnants of DHARMA's workmen?
    • Ben's kind of vindictive.
  • The notes on the blast door map appear to be "scientific," and include mathematical formulas (some of which relate to magnetism).
  • The Cameras could just be for security purposes also rather than observation alone.
    • What are you going to do? Vandalize the place you're stuck in for the next two years? Steal something from the Swan that says "Swan" on it? Come to think of it, that would kind of fulfill the "Utopian" aspect of the initiative: there's nothing you can steal, nothing worth damaging, and you don't get to quit. Ever.
      • It makes more sense that the cameras are to watch for other things, besides the people and things that are SUPPOSED to be there. For instance, hostiles. The cameras in the Swan were specifically for the people in the Pearl to watch, however.
