"He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat..."

In an US Weekly interview in the June 12, 2006 issue, Damon Lindelof was asked what it means that the Others are good guys, and he replied with a question: "Who has killed more people since they went to the Island, our guys or the Others?"

All crimes are listed for the sake of completeness; however, it is important to note that there are often extenuating circumstances for both groups. The motives of the Others are shrouded in mystery, making it difficult to judge them. Likewise, the survivors have no official law and order within their group other than that which they devise for themselves, and some crimes are direct retaliations against other crimes. For example, Jack would consider his attempted murder of Locke in The Beginning of the End both punishment for Locke's murder of Naomi, and a necessary step to protect the rest of the survivors from somebody whom he considers deranged and dangerous.

The Missing

The following people have disappeared, almost certainly taken by the Others. Cindy, Emma and Zack appeared again outside the cages in "Stranger in a Strange Land"; the remainder are not familiar faces, but have nonetheless not been heard from since.

Scorecard and analysis

A (very) rough accounting of the above, based on known serious actions. Note that this analysis is biased by the fact that 99% of the show is from the Losties' perspective, so violent acts of the Others may be committed offscreen. All these numbers are a minimum, as to what is known at this time.

  Lostaways Others Free Agents
Murder/Attempted Murder 21 3 (+ ~40? Purged DHARMAites) 4
Kidnapping/Incarceration 7 23 1
Torture/Assault 25 7 3

However, looking at the scorecard in more depth shows that apart from kidnapping, the Lostaways have committed the most crimes. It is not clear that the Others use of kidnapping is a bad thing - maybe kidnapping people is a good thing on the Island, done by the Others to provide their 'hostages' with a life of safety and to help them harness their perceived powers. It is also uncertain how many of those kidnapped considered themselves to be held against their will (aside from Jack, Sawyer, and Kate). The Others have also only assaulted Lostaways as a tool during kidnapping and never as a separate crime, so grouping the Others' use of assault with kidnapping makes sense, 'letting them off' of their assault score.
