  2. More appropriate for another article.
  3. Illogical or previously disproven.
  4. Proven by canon source, and moved to main article.
  5. Speculative and lacking any evidence to support arguments.

  • Usage of an indented bullet does not imply the statement is a response.

See the Lostpedia theory policy for more details.

From Lostpedia Theory Policy: "A theory is an attempt to explain a certain mystery using logic backed up with logically consistent observations and facts. Without supporting evidence, statements are merely speculation. Speculation is similar to theories except there are no facts or logic to back the theory up." - This is a theory page, not a speculation page. Speculation without supporting evidence can be deleted. To respond to a theory, use the discussion page. Feel free to add supporting evidence to an existing theory.

Connection to the Island

  • Charlotte is Annie, Ben's first love.
    • Ben shot Charlotte. Why would he shoot his childhood friend?
      • Annie and Ben were/are similar in age. Charlotte appears to be far younger than Ben.
        • This very website lists Ben as being born in the early '60s and Charlotte as born in '79. Charlotte could be Ben's child with Annie.
        • Women cannot become pregnant on the island so therefore, Ben would have had to come off the island with Annie with sanction from DHARMA (unlikely) get her pregnant and then come back without her. Making the possibility of him being her father very unlikely.
          • Charlotte is the daughter of Annie and Ben. Ben was born in the early 1960s, Charlotte was born in 1979. Ben and Annie were around 17 or 18 when they accidentally got pregnant. Widmore took Annie off the island and Annie (whose real name is Jeannette, she went by Annie as a girl) gave birth to Charlotte and two other girls in the future. This is why Ben adopted Alex, he felt like he was missing a daughter. This is also why he didn't want Alex and her boyfriend to get too close, he didn't want her to accidentally get pregnant and leave the island or die.
          • The name Annie is a variant of Ann and Hannah; Jeannette is unrelated to Annie.
            • Annie could be a nickname for Jeannette (jeANNEtte).
            • Can you cite a reference?
            • I cannot cite a reference of Annie being called Jeannette or Jeannette being called Annie. I saw "anne" in the name Jeannette and used it as support for the theory that Charlotte is the daughter of Annie and Ben. "Anne" in "Jeannette" is not the only coincidence that led me to this theory.
      • There are others on the island that don't age normally (Alpert, Walt); plus, time travel could be an element.
    • Charlotte is British and Annie had an American accent.
      • Plenty of people who move to another country as a young person end up adopting a native accent since one's accent develops more through the influence of peers and school than parents at home. There is also the possibility that she was raised by people other than her parents, who could have died in the purge.
  • Charlotte is Ben's "man" on the boat (as well as Michael, he didn't know about her), originally she is part of the Dharma and the only way she could get back to island is if she did something for Ben so she could get on the freighter. When she gets on the island Ben knew that she was wearing a bulletproof vest so he made few shots pretending like he is trying to kill her to really distant himself from her in the eyes of Survivors.
  • Charlotte has been on the island before at some time in her life, perhaps as a child.
  • She lost her memories of when she was on the island and wanted to get back so she could find out the missing parts of her life.
  • Charlotte is actually Annie's daughter with Ben from when they were both teens. Annie was sent away from the island so that she wouldn't die in childbirth.
  • If the birthday Ben gave us is correct (1979) and she started school when she was 5 years old, following the normal path of education (K-12, 4 years of undergrad, 4 years (more, even) of graduate school), Charlotte would graduate with her Ph.D in 2005. So, either she is still in school (making Ben wrong about her having already gotten her Ph.D), or she skipped some grades in the middle somewhere. Or, it's just a production folly.
    • She went through the British University system (3 years Undergrad, 3 Years Postgrad), and so would have achieved her Ph.D in 2003
      • Not only that, but the British school system is different from the US. They go to what we would classify as grade school from 5 to 16, then A Levels after that for two years, then university.
  • She was or is an anthropologist with the DHARMA Initiative, which is why she recognized the logo on the skeleton.
  • Her parents were part of the DHARMA initiative and died in the purge, which is why she has been trying to find the island.
  • Charlotte is Libby's older sister, or is otherwise somehow related to her. She does not believe that they found the wreckage because she knows Libby was on the plane on a mission to steer it off course.
    • If Charlotte and Libby are sisters, then Libby would be the older of the two, barring some time anomaly prior to the crash of 815.
      • Charlotte is the oldest of 3 sisters, but according to the information on this site, Libby is a good 12 years older than Charlotte. So the dates don't work. But for sure Libby is a close relative of someone we've seen, and we haven't learned her last name to hide this fact.
  • Charlotte is the daughter of the DeGroots. Charlotte believes that her parentage, as described in Ben's workup, is not completely accurate, so she must believe that she was adopted. Like the DeGroots, she is an accomplished scientist and researcher. Her reaction to the DHARMA logo in Tunisia was immediate, intense and personal.
  • Charlotte is grown up Charlotte Malkin, and her "birth" on the Island is a spiritual birth when she visited it while "between places" with Yemi after her drowning incident.
  • Charlotte was born to a high ranking dharma initiative couple who were conducting studies at the Temple site when she was born.
    • This would work because she hasn't been there yet as she told Daniel that she was still looking for where she was born.

Role in the Naomi's group

  • Charlotte is wearing a bullet-proof vest when Ben shoots her because Naomi used the secret phase, "Tell my sister I love her" as a precaution.
  • Was the second in command, and now that Naomi is dead, she is the leader of the Freighter Four.
    • She is the only one to whom a degrading nickname is not assigned by Naomi, showing respect.
    • None of the three men are shown to be good candidates for leaders. Daniel is scatterbrained, Miles is overly aggressive and self-serving, and Frank is considered a drunk--and may have only been hired as a pilot (whose only motive has to do with the fact that his buddy died flying Oceanic 815 instead of him).
    • Has practical field experience. Her flashback sets her up like an Indiana Jones/Lara Croft type scientist.
    • She is clever, as shown by her ability to sound convincing that she's not there to harm them, even when it is obvious that that is what Locke's group thinks.
      • Locke's group may, however, be wrong. Charlotte could be a "good person" caught up in Matthew Abaddon's grand scheme through her own curiosity, and may have genuinely believed that the plan was to rescue the survivors.
  • She is actually Abaddon's boss, and is running everything - she is the Woman Behind the Curtain. This could also tie in with her being Ben's Annie and would help explain why Naomi didn't say anything degrading about her when talking to Abaddon.
    • [Alias Season 1 spoiler] Same technique was used in Alias, covering Sydney's mother as "The Man."
  • She is going to be very active in the study of the Island powers to bring in and send out things (e.g. the polar bears or Anthony Cooper).
  • Charlotte was chosen by Abaddon to give her expertise on the island ruins and the Temple Inhabitants social structure. The producers have mentioned in podcasts that they did not make a big distinction between archeology and cultural anthropology in terms of the actual discipline divide in academia so we should assume she has expertise in both ancient ruins/languages and modern social organization. She will play a significant role in future episodes that deal with the Temple site on the island and will be able to understand and translate the ruin symbols.

Possible Allusions

  • Charlotte Staples Lewis's name is very close to that of Clive Staples (C.S.) Lewis, author of The Chronicles of Narnia. This is another hint that the island may be located in another dimension. Charlotte made her entry to the island by cutting her parachute cords and landing in a pool. This is similar to a scene in the novel The Magician's Nephew, in which entry to the other world of Narnia is gained by swimming through a magical pool of water.
    • C.S. Lewis wrote the book Prince Caspian, which tells the story of four people coming back to a faraway place they have been before--but is now changed from what it once was because time in that realm goes faster than it does in the 'real world'. They are summoned back by the call of someone in that land, step through time/space to return, and they work with the inhabitants to restore it. The four people on the helicopter may have all been on the island before. If this is true it's likely that they are connected with DHARMA- the island has changed because Ben let "the hostiles" take over, and now they're working to restore it by finding Ben.
    • Additionally, in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, the children travel to an alternate dimension and live for years--only to return to their old world and find that very little time has passed.
